The cost to renew a driver’s license in PA is $39.50 for a standard four-year non-commercial license. Drivers 65 and older can pay $27.50 for a two-year term instead. Add-ons change the total: a first-time REAL ID upgrade adds $30, commercial licenses run much higher, and a replacement card costs a few dollars more than a renewal.
Standard Renewal Fee
PennDOT charges $39.50 for a four-year non-commercial driver’s license renewal. If you’re 65 or older, you have a choice: keep the four-year term at $39.50, or take a two-year term at $27.50.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Renew a Driver’s License
Your license expires the day after your birthday. PennDOT mails a renewal notice about three months before that date, but the responsibility for renewing on time is yours regardless of whether the notice arrives.
REAL ID Adds $30 the First Time
If you haven’t yet upgraded to a REAL ID-compliant license, doing it as part of your renewal costs a one-time $30 on top of the standard fee. A first-time REAL ID renewal therefore runs $69.50. The upgrade matters more than it used to. Since May 7, 2025, TSA has required a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative like a U.S. passport to board a domestic flight. A non-REAL ID Pennsylvania license won’t get you through the checkpoint.3Transportation Security Administration. Commercial License Renewal Costs
CDL renewal fees are considerably higher than standard rates, and endorsements stack on top. PennDOT’s four-year CDL fees:
- CDL renewal: $127.50
- CDL with hazmat endorsement: $149.50
- CDL with motorcycle endorsement: $151.50
- CDL with both hazmat and motorcycle: $173.50
Drivers 65 and older can take a two-year CDL for $71.50, or $93.50 with hazmat.
Hazmat carries additional federal costs. The Transportation Security Administration charges a security threat assessment fee, currently $57.25 for a new assessment or $31.00 if you already hold a comparable credential such as a TWIC card.4Federal Register. Replacing a Lost or Damaged License
A replacement isn’t the same transaction as a renewal, but people often reach for one when they mean the other. If your license is lost, stolen, or damaged before your renewal date, PennDOT charges $42.50 for a duplicate. Watch for Messenger Service Surcharges
Pennsylvania authorizes private “online messenger” offices to process PennDOT transactions. They’re a legitimate alternative to state-run Driver License Centers, but each one sets its own service fee on top of the PennDOT charges. The amount varies by location, and PennDOT suggests calling around before you go.7Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Payment Methods
Online renewal is paid by credit or debit card. Mail renewals require a check or money order made out to “PennDOT.” At a Driver License Center, you can pay by debit card, credit card, check, or money order. Cash isn’t accepted.8PennDOT. What It Costs If You’re Late
Pennsylvania does not charge a late fee. The renewal price is $39.50 whether you file the day your license expires or several months after. The cost of being late shows up if you drive on the expired license.
Under 75 Pa.C.S. § 1501, driving with an expired license is a summary offense. If your license has been expired less than a year and you previously held a valid one, the fine is $25 plus court costs. Expired more than a year, the fine climbs to $200, and court costs can push the total to roughly $350. A first conviction doesn’t suspend your license, but a second conviction within five years brings a six-month suspension.9Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code Title 75 – 1501
Insurance is a quieter risk. Some policies won’t cover an accident that happens while your license is expired, which can leave you personally responsible for the damages.
One boundary worth noting: this covers renewal of a license that has simply expired. If your license was suspended or revoked, restoration is a separate process with its own fees set by statute and adjusted every two years against the Consumer Price Index.10Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
