How Much Does It Cost to Renew Your License in Michigan?

Renewing a standard driver’s license in Michigan costs $18 if you renew before it expires and $25 if you renew after the expiration date.¹ The cost to renew a license in Michigan depends on which credential you hold, whether you’re on time, and whether anything on your record forces extra fees before the Secretary of State will hand you a new card.

Renewal Fees by License Type

Michigan sets license fees by statute, and the amount you pay comes down to the type of credential in your wallet:

Drivers 65 and older qualify for a reduced renewal fee under the same statute.¹

The enhanced license costs more because it doubles as a passport alternative for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean nations, and it’s automatically REAL ID-compliant.³ The chauffeur’s license carries a flat $35 whether you renew a day early or a year late.

The Late Fee and How to Avoid It

That $7 gap between an on-time and late operator’s renewal is easy to trip over. If you renew by mail, the postmark date is what determines which fee applies, so a renewal dropped in the mailbox a few days before your expiration date still qualifies for the lower amount.¹

You have a wide renewal window. You can start the process up to a year before your expiration date and up to four years after it.⁴ Once you cross the four-year mark, online renewal is off the table and you’ll need to visit a Secretary of State office in person.

When Renewing in Person Is Required

The renewal fee is the same whether you renew online, by mail, at a self-service kiosk, or at a Secretary of State office. But several situations block the cheaper self-service paths and force an office visit:

You already used an alternative method (online, mail, or self-service station) for your last two renewals.
You are not a U.S. citizen, so legal presence has to be verified in person.
Your license has been expired for more than four years.
Your license is suspended, revoked, or denied.
Your photo on file is more than 12 years old or missing.
You are turning 21 and need a horizontal card.
You hold a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement.
You are listed on the sex offender registry.

Michigan also requires an in-person visit every 12 years for a new photo and vision test, so at least one renewal cycle out of every two will bring you into an office regardless of what else is on your record.⁵ The enhanced license can only be renewed in person, with no online or mail option.⁶

Extra Costs If Your License Is Suspended

If your license has been suspended, revoked, or denied, you can’t renew it at the standard price. You have to resolve the underlying cause first, whether that means paying overdue fines, completing a required driver improvement course, serving out the suspension period, or satisfying court-ordered conditions.

Then you pay a reinstatement fee to the Secretary of State, on top of the renewal fee itself. For most suspensions the reinstatement fee is $125.⁷ Suspensions tied to certain financial responsibility violations carry a lower reinstatement fee of $85. Court fines are separate from these amounts and get paid to the court, not the Secretary of State.

The Cost of Driving on an Expired License

Waiting too long has a cost beyond the $7 late fee. Driving with an expired license in Michigan is a civil infraction that carries a fine plus court costs, and it adds points to your driving record. One county’s schedule lists $190 for an expired license violation.

A short lapse can also complicate your auto insurance. Insurers expect you to hold a valid license as a condition of coverage. An accident while driving on an expired license can prompt your insurer to dispute coverage or flag you as higher risk at renewal, which can raise your premium well past the price of the license itself.

Driving on a suspended or revoked license is a different matter entirely. That’s a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a fine of up to $500 for a first offense, and the Secretary of State will cancel your vehicle’s registration plates.⁸ Repeat offenses carry steeper penalties, up to felony charges for a third or subsequent violation.

Upgrading to REAL ID at Renewal

Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant credential has been required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.⁹ A REAL ID-compliant Michigan license shows a star, either in a gold circle on older cards or inside a Michigan silhouette on newer ones. A card marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” still works for driving but won’t get you through airport security.³

Upgrading a standard license to a REAL ID-compliant one doesn’t add a separate fee, but it does require an in-person visit with proof of identity, legal presence, and Michigan residency. Acceptable documents include a valid U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate with a raised seal, or a permanent resident card, along with two documents showing your Michigan address such as a utility bill from the last 90 days or a current lease.¹⁰

Choosing the enhanced license instead brings you to $38 rather than $18, which is the real price difference to weigh if you want a credential that covers airport security and land or sea border crossings without carrying a passport.³
