How Much Does It Cost to Renew Your License in NC?

Renewing a standard Class C driver’s license in North Carolina costs $52 for an eight-year license if you’re between 18 and 65, or $32.50 for a five-year license if you’re 66 or older. Those are the base fees the NCDMV set on July 1, 2024. What you actually pay can climb from there depending on endorsements, how you pay, and whether you need a duplicate or a REAL ID upgrade.

Standard Class C Fees by Age

The NCDMV prices a Class C license at $6.50 per year. Your age at renewal decides the length of the term, and the length decides the total:

The per-year rate rose from $5.50 to $6.50 in the July 2024 adjustment, a 19.18% jump applied across roughly 90 license and registration fees. The NCDMV is required to make that Consumer Price Index adjustment every four years.³

Commercial License and Endorsement Costs

A commercial driver’s license runs more and renews on a shorter cycle. A Class A, B, or C CDL costs $25.50 per year over a five-year term, for a total of $127.50.¹ CDL holders with a passenger or school bus endorsement renew every three years instead of five.²

Endorsements are priced per year on top of the license itself. Hazardous materials (H) and passenger (P) endorsements each add $5.00 per year, or $25 across a five-year CDL term.¹

North Carolina doesn’t issue a separate motorcycle license. You add a motorcycle endorsement to your existing license at $3.05 per year.¹ On an eight-year Class C for a driver under 66, that’s an extra $24.40, bringing the total to $76.40.

Card Processing Adds a Little More

The base fee is the same regardless of how you renew, but paying with a card adds a surcharge that depends on the channel:

In person at an NCDMV office: 1.22% card processing fee. Cash, check, or money order avoids it entirely.⁴
Online through myNCDMV: a $3 flat transaction fee to the payment vendor PayIt, plus a 1.85% card processing fee.⁵
Self-service kiosk: 2% card processing fee.⁴

On a $52 online renewal, the extras come to roughly $3.96. To pay exactly the sticker price, use cash or a money order at an NCDMV office. Personal checks are accepted, but they must be drawn on a North Carolina bank or a bank with a branch in the state and must carry your pre-printed name, address, and phone number.⁴

Duplicate and Replacement Licenses

If your license is lost, stolen, or damaged, a duplicate costs $16.75.⁶ The same fee applies if you need an updated card after a name or address change, and it’s the same $16.75 for a commercial license duplicate.

REAL ID Costs Nothing Extra

Upgrading to a REAL ID at renewal adds no charge beyond the standard fee. It does require an in-person visit with original or certified documents proving your identity, Social Security number, two proofs of North Carolina residency, and liability insurance. Photocopies aren’t accepted.⁷ Since May 7, 2025, TSA and other federal agencies have required a REAL ID or another accepted form of identification for domestic flights and certain federal facilities.⁸

You May Have More Time to Renew Right Now

Session Law 2025-47, signed on July 1, 2025, created a temporary moratorium on Class C license expirations. A Class C license that expires on or after July 1, 2025 stays valid for in-state driving for up to two years past the printed expiration date, through December 31, 2027.⁹

The moratorium doesn’t cover commercial licenses and doesn’t apply to licenses that are suspended, revoked, or canceled.¹⁰ An expired license under the moratorium is valid only for driving inside North Carolina. The NCDMV has said the expired card may not be accepted for identification, air travel, renting a car, filling prescriptions, or notarization, and other states may not honor it.⁹

What Skipping Renewal Can Cost

Outside the moratorium, driving on an expired license is an infraction under North Carolina law, which brings court costs and can appear on your driving record. The charge can be dismissed if you renew within 30 days of expiration and would otherwise have qualified for the license. A separate 30-day defense exists for military members who were deployed when their license expired, measured from their return.¹¹

There’s an insurance angle too. An expired license doesn’t automatically cancel your auto policy, but if you’re in an accident while driving on one, the insurer may deny the claim or dispute the payout. A citation from the stop can also push your premiums up.
