The cost to renew a driver’s license in VA is $32 for a standard eight-year license, or $16 for a five-year license if you’re 75 or older.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew Your Driver’s License The fee is the same whether you renew online, by mail, or in person. A few situations add to that total: upgrading to REAL ID costs an extra $10, renewing late adds up to $10, and commercial licenses run on a separate fee schedule.

Renew Your Driver’s License Each of those exams carries its own fee, and you’ll need to prepare for and schedule them separately.
There’s an insurance issue worth checking too. Auto policies don’t automatically cancel when your license expires, but many exclude coverage for losses that happen while the driver lacks a valid license. An accident on an expired license can lead the insurer to deny the claim or dispute the settlement. Read your policy’s exclusion language before assuming you’re covered.
A separate rule applies to limited-duration licenses issued to individuals with temporary legal presence in the U.S.: those cannot be renewed at all. When one expires, the holder must apply for a new license from scratch with updated proof of legal presence.
Replacement License
A duplicate or replacement license, if you lose the card between renewals, is $20, plus the $10 REAL ID surcharge if the replacement is REAL ID-compliant.7Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace Your Driver’s License or Learner’s Permit
