Becoming a Louisiana medical marijuana patient costs roughly $75 to $200 for the physician evaluation, nothing for a state card or application, and $40 to $120 per product at the dispensary, with most patients spending $150 to $400 a month on products once they settle into a routine. The recommendation has to be renewed every twelve months, usually for $75 to $150. None of it is covered by insurance, an HSA, or a tax deduction, so every dollar comes out of pocket.
What the Doctor Visit Costs
Your first expense is a consultation with a clinician authorized to recommend marijuana. In Louisiana that includes physicians, nurse practitioners with prescriptive authority, and licensed medical psychologists in good standing with their licensing boards.1Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 40 – 1046
In-person evaluations usually run $100 to $200. Telehealth visits are cheaper, often $75 to $100, and Louisiana law explicitly allows marijuana recommendations through telemedicine, so a video visit carries the same legal weight as an office appointment.1Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 40 – 1046 For patients far from a recommending clinic, telehealth is usually the lowest-cost route in.
There is no state card fee and no physical card. Once the clinician verifies your diagnosis, the recommendation is uploaded electronically through the Prescription Monitoring Program, and you can visit a dispensary the same day. No mailing delay, no processing charge.2Louisiana Department of Health. Medical Marijuana
The practical question is whether a clinician will agree your condition qualifies. The named list covers cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy, PTSD, Crohn’s disease, chronic pain from fibromyalgia or sickle cell disease, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, HIV/AIDS, several other neurodegenerative diseases, and hospice or palliative care. A catch-all also lets any authorized clinician recommend marijuana for any condition they personally consider debilitating.1Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 40 – 1046
What You’ll Pay at the Dispensary
Louisiana’s dispensary market is small and tightly regulated, which keeps retail prices toward the higher end nationally. The state caps dispensary locations at ten base permits plus up to twenty satellites, and only two licensed manufacturers supply every dispensary in the state.2Louisiana Department of Health. Medical Marijuana Limited supply means limited price competition.
Typical shelf prices:
- Flower, 3.5 grams: $45 to $75, depending on strain and location
- Metered-dose inhalers and tinctures: $70 to $120 per unit
- Edibles like gummies: $40 to $80 for a package containing around 100 milligrams of THC
Standard state and local sales taxes apply on top. Crop yields, lab testing requirements, and the narrow supply chain cause prices to drift up and down through the year. Some stores run modest loyalty programs or veteran discounts, but the price floor stays relatively high.
Monthly Budget
A patient on a steady regimen should plan on $150 to $400 or more per month on products alone, depending on dosage and product type. That figure sits on top of the annual renewal and doesn’t include the taxes or payment surcharges described below.
Annual Renewal
Recommendations expire no more than twelve months from the date of issuance.2Louisiana Department of Health. Medical Marijuana A follow-up evaluation before that expiration date is usually shorter and cheaper than the first visit, typically $75 to $150, with telehealth renewals at the lower end.
Don’t let it lapse. Louisiana’s controlled-substance statute makes possession of a Schedule I substance unlawful without a valid prescription or recommendation.3Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 40-966 – Penalty for Distribution or Possession With Intent to Distribute Narcotic Drugs Listed in Schedule I The moment your recommendation expires, the products in your medicine cabinet become illegal to possess. Put the renewal date on a calendar.
Why Nothing Offsets the Cost
No health insurance plan in the United States covers medical marijuana consultations or products. Marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law as of mid-2026. The DEA has proposed rescheduling to Schedule III, with a formal hearing set for late June 2026, but the process is not yet final.4Federal Register. Schedules of Controlled Substances – Rescheduling of Marijuana Until it is, private insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid are all barred from covering cannabis costs.
The same federal classification closes the other usual escape hatches. Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts cannot reimburse marijuana purchases, and the IRS states plainly that expenses for controlled substances not legal under federal law do not count as deductible medical expenses, even where state law permits medical use.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 502 – Medical and Dental Expenses You also cannot itemize these costs on your federal return. Every dollar is after-tax, with no federal offset.
How You Pay at the Counter
Most banks still keep their distance from cannabis transactions, so Louisiana dispensaries primarily take cash and debit. Debit payments usually run through “cashless ATM” systems that code the sale as an ATM withdrawal and tack on a convenience fee of a few dollars per swipe. Bringing cash avoids that surcharge.
Credit cards are generally not accepted. Federal banking rules keep the major card networks away from cannabis sales, and no federal banking reform has changed that as of 2026. Some dispensaries have begun accepting ACH transfers or proprietary payment apps, but cash is still the most widely accepted and cheapest method.
Non-Dollar Costs Worth Knowing Before You Enroll
Two consequences of enrolling don’t appear on any receipt but matter as much as the price tag.
Firearms. Federal law makes it a felony for any “unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance” to possess a firearm or ammunition.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 922 – Unlawful Acts Because marijuana remains federally controlled, active medical patients fall inside that prohibition regardless of Louisiana law. ATF Form 4473, required for every purchase from a licensed dealer, asks whether you are an unlawful user of a controlled substance; answering “no” while holding an active recommendation can bring federal felony charges for making a false statement. The proposed move to Schedule III would not repeal this prohibition, because the statute covers any controlled substance.
Employment. Louisiana protects state government employees from adverse action based solely on a positive marijuana test when they hold a valid recommendation, with exceptions for on-the-job use or impairment and for law enforcement, firefighters, EMS, public safety officials, and horse racing commission employees.7Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 49-1016 – Employment Discrimination and Physician-Recommended Marijuana Private-sector employees have no equivalent state protection, and federal courts have consistently held that the ADA does not require employers to accommodate the use of a federally illegal substance. If your job tests, factor that risk in before you pay for the first visit.
