In 2026, SSI pays up to $1,055 per month to an individual living alone in Minnesota and up to $1,582 to a qualifying couple living alone, combining the federal SSI benefit with Minnesota Supplemental Aid. How much does SSI pay in Minnesota for any given person depends on income, assets, and living arrangement, so most recipients land somewhere below those ceilings.
2026 Maximum Monthly Payments
Minnesota sets a minimum total monthly income called the MSA assistance standard and pays the difference between that standard and your federal SSI amount.1Minnesota Department of Human Services. Minnesota Supplemental Aid (MSA) The 2026 standards are:
- Individual living alone: $1,055 per month
- Individual living with others: $755.33 per month
- Married couple living alone: $1,582 per month
- Married couple living with others: $1,058 per month
These figures are the combined federal-plus-state totals.2Minnesota Department of Human Services. MSA Assistance Standards
The Federal Portion
The federal piece is set by the Social Security Administration and adjusted each January for inflation. For 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 per month for a qualifying couple, reflecting a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment.3Social Security Administration. What Minnesota Adds on Top
Minnesota Supplemental Aid fills the gap between your federal SSI check and the state’s assistance standard for your living situation. An individual living alone who receives the full $994 federal payment gets a $61 MSA supplement, bringing the monthly total to $1,055. If your federal payment is smaller because of countable income or other factors, MSA generally makes up more of the difference, still capped at the assistance standard.
Extra Help for High Housing Costs
Recipients whose shelter expenses eat up a large share of income can qualify for MSA Housing Assistance. You are eligible if your total housing costs — rent or mortgage, utilities, and related expenses — exceed 40 percent of your gross income before the allowance is applied.6Minnesota Department of Human Services. MSA Housing Assistance The allowance is $483.50 per month as of July 2025 and adjusts annually with the federal SSI rate. Documentation of your shelter costs goes to your county human services office.
How Income Reduces Your Payment
Your check drops as your income rises, but not dollar-for-dollar on every source. SSA applies exclusions first.
Unearned Income
Pensions, veterans’ benefits, unemployment, bank interest, and similar payments count as unearned income. SSA ignores the first $20 per month of most income regardless of source.7Social Security Administration. Income Exclusions for SSI Program After that, each remaining dollar of unearned income reduces your SSI payment by a dollar.
Earned Income
Wages get better treatment. SSA applies any unused portion of the $20 general exclusion, then ignores the first $65 of monthly earnings, then counts only half of what remains.7Social Security Administration. Income Exclusions for SSI Program
Say you earn $505 in a month from part-time work and have no other income. Subtract the $20 general exclusion and the $65 earned-income exclusion, and $420 remains. Half of that, $210, is countable. Your federal SSI drops from $994 to $784 for that month.
Income From a Spouse or Parent
If you live with a spouse who does not receive SSI, SSA counts a portion of your spouse’s income as yours through a process called deeming. The agency takes your spouse’s earnings, subtracts exclusions and an allocation for any ineligible children in the household, and adds the rest to your countable income.8Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 416.1160 – What Is Deeming of Income The same rule applies to a child under 18 living with an ineligible parent. Deeming can shrink or wipe out your payment even when your spouse or parent never gives you money directly.
How Living Arrangements Change the Amount
Where you live and who pays your bills matters. SSA treats free or subsidized shelter as a form of unearned income called in-kind support and maintenance. As of September 30, 2024, food no longer counts in these calculations — only shelter expenses like rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, and utilities.9Federal Register. Omitting Food From In-Kind Support and Maintenance Calculations
The One-Third Reduction Rule
If you live in another person’s household for a full month and someone else pays all your shelter costs while others provide all your meals, SSA reduces your federal payment by one-third, roughly $331.33 in 2026.10Social Security Administration. Spotlight on One Third Reduction Provision Food no longer affects the dollar amount of the reduction, though SSA still asks about meals to decide which valuation rule applies.9Federal Register. Omitting Food From In-Kind Support and Maintenance Calculations The reduction does not apply if you pay your fair share of shelter costs, even when you live in someone else’s home.
The Presumed Maximum Value Rule
When someone helps with your shelter costs but the one-third rule does not apply — for example, a friend covers part of your rent, or you get free housing but buy your own food — SSA uses the Presumed Maximum Value rule. The most the agency can count against you is one-third of the Federal Benefit Rate plus $20, which comes to roughly $351.33 for 2026.11Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Living Arrangements If you can show the shelter help you actually receive is worth less than the presumed value, SSA uses the lower figure.
Stays in a Medical Facility
If you enter a hospital, nursing home, or other medical facility where Medicaid covers more than half the cost of your care, your SSI payment drops to $30 per month.12Social Security Administration. Spotlight on Continued SSI Benefits for Persons Who Are Temporarily Institutionalized Once you return home, notify SSA so your regular payment can be restored.
Asset Limits That Can Cut You Off
Payments stop entirely if your countable resources go too high. For 2026, the limit is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.4Social Security Administration. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Bank accounts, cash, stocks, and similar financial assets count.
Several assets are excluded:
- The home you live in and the land it sits on
- One vehicle per household
- Most household goods and personal belongings
- Property you have no practical way to sell
You do not have to give up your home or car to qualify.13Social Security Administration. Exceptions to SSI Income and Resource Limits If your countable resources exceed the limit at any point during a month, you lose eligibility for that entire month.
How to Apply and Start Getting the State Supplement
Apply for SSI through the Social Security Administration, not through the state. You can start the application online, by phone, or in person at a local Social Security office. Once you qualify for SSI, Minnesota generally enrolls you in the basic MSA supplement automatically through your county human services office; a separate state application is not usually needed. MSA Housing Assistance is different: you must give your county office documentation of your shelter costs to receive it.
