What Comes With the Job Beyond Salary
Cash pay is only part of the compensation. The mayor has the use of Gracie Mansion, the official residence in Carl Schurz Park on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The value of living at Gracie Mansion likely isn’t taxed as income. Among big U.S. cities, New York’s mayoral salary is high but not the highest. San Francisco’s mayor position pays $383,760, though the current officeholder has declined that salary. What the Mayor Actually Takes Home
The $258,750 is gross. It gets hit by federal, New York State, and New York City income taxes, plus FICA. For a single filer in 2026, the salary reaches the 35% federal marginal bracket, which begins at $256,225, though the effective rate is lower because the brackets below it are taxed at lower rates.9Ameriprise Financial. State and city income taxes stack on top of that. Take-home pay ends up meaningfully below the headline number, and the total tax load runs higher than a similarly paid executive would face in most other U.S. cities.
Why the Salary Doesn’t Change Often
Raising the mayor’s pay isn’t a normal budget item. The commission only advises. Whether its numbers become law is up to the City Council. There’s also a longstanding anti-self-dealing convention: raises for the mayor generally take effect at the start of the next term rather than mid-term for the person who signed them.
Pension After Leaving Office
A former mayor draws retirement benefits from the New York City Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS), the same system that covers most civilian city employees.13Office of Payroll Administration. Federal law caps the annual benefit any defined benefit plan can pay.
