How Much in Food Stamps for a Family of 3 in California?

A family of three in California can receive up to $785 per month in CalFresh, the state’s version of food stamps, for the federal fiscal year running October 2025 through September 2026.¹ Most households get less. A family with no countable income receives the full $785; a family earning close to the eligibility ceiling may get only a few dollars. Your actual benefit depends on your earnings, your rent and utilities, and which deductions apply to you.

How the Monthly Amount Is Calculated

Start with $785. The county then subtracts 30% of your net monthly income from that ceiling, and what’s left is your benefit.² The formula assumes a household spends about 30 cents of every available dollar on food, and CalFresh fills the gap.

Net income is not your paycheck. Several deductions come off your gross income first, and each one you claim raises your final benefit.

Deductions That Reduce Your Countable Income

Standard deduction of $209 for households of one to three people, applied automatically.³
Earned income deduction of 20% of gross wages for any working household member.⁴
Dependent care costs actually paid so an adult can work, look for work, or attend training.
Excess shelter deduction for housing costs (rent or mortgage plus utilities) that exceed half your income after the other deductions. This deduction is capped at $744 per month unless someone in the household is 60 or older or has a disability, in which case there is no cap.⁵
Standard Utility Allowance of $663 if the household pays heating or cooling costs separately from rent, used in place of actual bills.³
Medical expenses above $35 per month for an elderly or disabled household member. A $120 standard medical deduction applies automatically; verified costs above $155 can be deducted in full over the $35 threshold.⁶

An Example

Say a family of three has one working parent earning $2,500 per month gross, pays $1,200 in rent, and gets a separate utility bill. The math:

Earned income deduction: 20% of $2,500 = $500
Standard deduction: $209
Adjusted income: $2,500 − $500 − $209 = $1,791
Shelter costs: $1,200 rent + $663 utility allowance = $1,863
Excess shelter: $1,863 − $895.50 (half of adjusted income) = $967.50, capped at $744
Net income: $1,791 − $744 = $1,047
Expected food contribution: 30% of $1,047 = $314
Monthly CalFresh benefit: $785 − $314 = $471

That household would receive around $471. A family with no income at all would receive the full $785. Because deductions do so much of the work, it pays to report every shelter cost, utility, and dependent care expense to the county.

Income Limits for Three People

California uses broad-based categorical eligibility, which lifts the gross income ceiling above the standard federal cutoff. For a three-person household from October 2025 through September 2026, gross monthly income must be at or below $4,442 (200% of the federal poverty level), and net monthly income after deductions must be at or below $2,221 (100% of the federal poverty level).⁷

The gross figure is the first filter. If your family clears it, the county then calculates net income. Households that include a member who is elderly or disabled only have to pass the net income test. Households where every member receives SSI or certain other public assistance may be exempt from these tests entirely.

Who Counts as Your Family of Three

CalFresh treats people as one household when they live together and regularly buy and prepare food together. You can’t split into separate households just because family members eat different things sometimes. Parents and their children under 22 in the same home are always one household, and so are married couples and any couple who share a child under 22.⁸ Roommates who genuinely shop and cook separately can apply as their own households at the same address.

Getting the number right matters. Household size sets both the income limits and the $785 maximum. If a grandparent or roommate shares meals with your family, the county will usually count them, and the household becomes four people rather than three.

No Asset Test in California

Federal SNAP rules cap household assets at $3,000, or $4,500 if the household includes an elderly or disabled member. California waives that test through broad-based categorical eligibility.⁹ Savings, checking balances, and the value of your car don’t disqualify you. Only income relative to the limits above matters for eligibility.

Situations That Can Change the Answer

Adults Without a Child Under 14

Work requirements do not apply to a parent in a family of three whose child is under 14. If your family instead includes an adult 18 to 64 with no dependent child under 14 who is able to work, that adult must work, volunteer, or attend school or job training for an average of 20 hours per week, or earn at least $217.50 per week from paid work.¹⁰ Adults who don’t meet the rule can only receive CalFresh for three months in any three-year period, though illness, pregnancy, and other circumstances can excuse the requirement.

If a Parent Is a College Student

Students enrolled more than half-time at a college, university, or trade school are generally not eligible unless they meet an exemption. The common ones are working at least 20 hours per week for pay, participating in federal or state work-study, caring for a child under six, or being a single parent enrolled full-time and caring for a child under 12.¹¹[/mf] If one parent in a three-person household is a full-time student without an exemption, it can affect the household’s eligibility.

Mixed-Immigration-Status Families

CalFresh is open to U.S. citizens and to many noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents (no five-year wait applies in California), refugees, asylees, people with T-visas or U-visas, parolees admitted for at least one year, and certain other groups. An undocumented parent cannot receive benefits personally but can apply on behalf of eligible household members, such as U.S.-born children. The ineligible member’s income is partially counted, but their presence does not reduce the household’s allotment.

Applying for CalFresh does not count as a public charge and will not affect a green card application, naturalization, or any pending immigration case.¹²

How to Apply and How Fast You Get Paid

The fastest route is online at BenefitsCal.com, California’s portal for food, cash, and health coverage.¹³ You can also apply by phone, by mail, or in person at your county social services office. File the application even if you don’t yet have all your documents; submitting it starts the processing clock.

The county will schedule a required interview by phone or in person, and a caseworker will review your application and ask for verification of identity, income, and housing costs. A decision must come within 30 days of the date your signed application is received.¹⁴

Families in severe financial hardship can qualify for expedited processing within three calendar days if any of the following applies: gross monthly income under $150 with liquid resources of $100 or less; combined rent and utilities that exceed gross income plus liquid resources; or being a destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household.¹⁵ Approved benefits arrive each month on a Golden State Advantage EBT card and work like a debit card at grocery stores and many farmers’ markets.¹⁶
