A Commercial Driver’s License in Florida usually costs between $3,000 and $8,500 out of pocket, and the wide spread comes almost entirely from which training program you pick. If you qualify for the GI Bill or a workforce grant, your out-of-pocket cost can drop to almost nothing.
State Licensing Fees
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles charges $75 for an original or renewal CDL. A failed knowledge exam retest is $10, and a failed skills test retest is $20. Each endorsement, whether HazMat, tanker, doubles/triples, or passenger, costs $7. CDL Training Costs
Training is by far the biggest expense. Federal rules require every first-time applicant to complete Entry-Level Driver Training through a school listed on the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry before sitting for the skills exam.3eCFR. 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F – Entry-Level Driver Training Requirements On and After February 7, 2022 The state verifies your training electronically before letting you test.
Prices vary by class and school. Indian River State College, for example, charges $7,500 for Class A, $2,500 for Class B, and $3,300 for Class B with a school bus and passenger endorsement.4Indian River State College. Commercial Vehicle Driving Private truck driving schools generally run $3,000 to $7,500, with longer programs and more behind-the-wheel hours costing more than accelerated courses. Some schools bundle the skills test fee into tuition, which can save money; others don’t, so ask before you enroll.
Company-Sponsored Training
Large carriers will often pay for your training in exchange for a work commitment. It looks free, but it’s a contract. A typical upfront sponsorship locks you in for 6 to 18 months after you get your license; leave early and you owe the prorated tuition balance immediately. Other carriers use tuition reimbursement, deducting a set amount from each paycheck over 12 to 36 months, with whatever remains owed if you leave.
This can work out well if you genuinely want to drive for that carrier. Before signing, ask for the exact dollar figure you’d owe if you left at six months, at one year, and at each subsequent milestone. Some contracts are much more aggressive than others.
Third-Party Skills Test Fees
This is the cost most applicants don’t see coming. Florida contracts with private testing sites to administer the skills exam, and each site sets its own price. DOT Physical and Drug Testing
Every CDL holder needs a valid DOT medical examiner’s certificate. In Florida the physical typically costs $79 to $150 and is almost never covered by health insurance. The standard certificate is good for two years; drivers with conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease may receive one valid for only a year, meaning more frequent exams over time.6Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Pre-employment drug screening is standard in the industry, and random testing continues throughout your career. Company drivers rarely pay for this directly; employers cover it. Owner-operators pay for their own testing through a consortium. Endorsements and Background Checks
The $7 state fee for each endorsement is only the licensing charge. Two endorsements come with separate federal security fees that cost far more.

Adding a HazMat endorsement also shortens your Florida license cycle to four years instead of the standard eight, so you’ll renew, and pay renewal fees, twice as often.11Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.18
Ways to Lower or Eliminate the Cost
The sticker price doesn’t have to be what you pay. Several programs can cover most or all of it.
GI Bill Benefits
Veterans with Post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility can use their benefits at approved CDL training schools. For non-college-degree programs, the VA covers net tuition and mandatory fees up to $30,908.34 for the 2026–2027 academic year, more than enough for any Florida program. Veterans with at least 36 months of active duty receive the full benefit; shorter service is prorated. A book and supplies stipend of up to $83 per month is also available.12Veterans Affairs. WIOA Training Grants
Grants funded through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act are available at local CareerSource offices. You may qualify as a dislocated worker if you lost your job through no fault of your own, regardless of prior income. You can also qualify through the adult program if your household income is below 250 percent of the federal poverty level. These grants can cover the full cost of an approved CDL program, though funding varies by location.
Registered Apprenticeships
Registered apprenticeship programs pair paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction, so you earn wages rather than paying tuition. What It Costs to Keep the License
A standard Florida CDL is valid for eight years, so the $75 renewal fee works out to under $10 a year. A CDL with a HazMat endorsement expires after four years and requires re-passing the TSA background check at each renewal, adding $85.25 on top of the state renewal and endorsement fees.11Florida Legislature. The DOT physical hits more often than license renewal. At minimum, you’ll pay for a new exam every two years. Across an eight-year license cycle, that’s at least four physicals totaling $316 to $600, assuming the standard two-year certificate.
