What the $35 Fee Covers
The $35 gets you through the full application at a Secretary of State branch. That includes a vision screening and a 15-question multiple-choice knowledge exam taken on a computer at the office. You will not have to take a driving skills test unless you’ve never been licensed to drive at all. The minimum age is 16.2Michigan Secretary of State. The Enhanced Chauffeur’s License at $50
The enhanced chauffeur’s license runs $15 more than the standard version. It functions as an approved document for crossing the border into Canada by land or sea, and applying for it requires proof of U.S. citizenship.1Michigan Secretary of State. When You Can Skip the Knowledge Exam
The fee stays the same, but you can avoid the 15-question test in a couple of situations. If you already hold a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or commercial learner’s permit, the chauffeur’s knowledge exam is waived because the CDL exam already covers the material. Renewal Cost and Timing
A Michigan chauffeur’s license expires on your birthday every four years, the same cycle as a standard driver’s license.3Michigan Secretary of State. Do You Actually Need One?
Before paying the $35, it’s worth confirming that a chauffeur’s license is what your situation actually calls for. Michigan requires it if you’re employed primarily to drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or more, if you operate as a carrier of passengers or property, or if you drive a bus or school bus.1Michigan Secretary of State. The statutory language is “employed for the principal purpose” of driving, defined under MCL 257.6 as work that customarily involves driving a vehicle for hire, transporting passengers for hire, or hauling merchandise for display, sale, or delivery.4Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.6 If driving is incidental to your job rather than a core part of it, you likely fall outside that definition.
Michigan also exempts a long list of drivers from the chauffeur’s license requirement, including:
- Farmers and farm employees driving in connection with farming operations
- Firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel operating official equipment
- Utility company employees driving trucks that transport workers, materials, and tools
- Service or repair personnel who carry tools and parts only incidentally
- County road commission employees, local government road workers, and Michigan Department of Transportation employees performing highway and bridge maintenance
- Volunteer drivers who only receive reimbursement for operating costs
- People driving a motor home for personal pleasure
- Parents or their designees transporting students to school and school events
- Taxi, limousine, and transportation network company drivers

Chauffeur’s License Is Not the Same as a CDL
The $35 chauffeur’s license and a federal commercial driver’s license cover different vehicles, and paying for one doesn’t cover the other. A chauffeur’s license covers vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or more under Michigan law. A CDL is required under federal law for vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, combinations exceeding that threshold, vehicles designed to carry 16 or more passengers, or vehicles hauling hazardous materials.6Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. If you drive a 15,000-pound delivery truck that falls below the CDL threshold, the $35 chauffeur’s license is what you need. If your truck is above 26,001 pounds, you need a CDL, which has its own fee schedule and testing process separate from the chauffeur’s license.
The Real Cost of Skipping the License
The $35 fee looks smaller once you compare it to the penalty for driving without the required chauffeur’s license. Under MCL 257.904, a first offense is a misdemeanor carrying up to 93 days in jail, a fine of up to $500, or both.
