Fees by License Type
The Class C license is what most California drivers carry, and it covers standard passenger vehicles. The $46 original application fee gives you three attempts to pass each required test within 12 months of applying. Commercial licenses cost more because the testing is more involved. An original Class A or B commercial license runs $100. A commercial Class C license is $59. Renewal, Replacement, and Retest Fees

How You Can Pay
The DMV accepts cash, checks, money orders, and credit or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover). Apple Pay and Google Pay also work. Moving From Another State

Drivers Under 18
Teens pay the same $46 application fee as adults for a Class C provisional license. The real cost difference is everything that leads up to the application. You can apply for an instruction permit at 15½, but you must hold that permit for at least six months and log 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night) before scheduling the driving test. REAL ID Costs the Same

Senior ID Card
