How Much Is a Driver’s License in Georgia: Fees, CDL, and Replacements

A Georgia driver’s license costs $32 for the standard eight-year term or $20 for a five-year term. Learner’s permits and provisional licenses for teen drivers are $10 each, and a commercial driver’s license application runs $35. Renewals cost the same as the original license for the same term.

Fee Schedule by License Type

Georgia law caps what the Department of Driver Services can charge for each license class. These are the current fees for the most common credentials:

  • Class C noncommercial license, eight-year term: $32
  • Class C noncommercial license, five-year term: $20
  • Class D provisional license (teen graduated licensing): $10
  • Instructional permit, paid at the knowledge exam: $10
  • Commercial driver’s license application: $35

The eight-year license is the better value per year and the most common choice. Renewing a standard eight-year Class C license costs another $32.1Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-25 – Applications; Fees; Provisions for Voluntary Participation in Various Programs

Replacement and Reinstatement Fees

A replacement card that keeps your original expiration date costs $10. There’s one wrinkle: if you request a replacement within 150 days of expiration, DDS processes it as a full renewal with a new term and charges the renewal fee instead.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms

Reinstatement after a suspension costs considerably more. For a first offense, the in-person reinstatement fee is $210, whether the suspension was for a DUI, a points violation, or driving without proof of insurance. Processing by mail drops the fee to $200. Second and subsequent offenses carry the same per-transaction structure, but multiple suspensions stack, so the total depends on your driving record.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Transferring an Out-of-State License

If you move to Georgia with a valid out-of-state license, DDS does not charge a separate transfer fee. You pay the standard license fee for the term you select: $32 for eight years or $20 for five.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Out of State Transfer

Commercial Driver’s License Fees

A CDL costs $35 to apply for. That single fee covers up to four attempts at the required knowledge and skills testing. Fail four times, or let 360 days pass between attempts, and you’ll owe the $35 again. Veterans and school bus drivers can have the fee waived by presenting the required documentation.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Apply for a Commercial (CDL) License (Class A, B, C)

Separate endorsements may be required for hauling hazardous materials, driving passenger vehicles, or pulling double or triple trailers. CDL holders must obtain their license through their home state, and holding a CDL from more than one state is prohibited under federal law.7Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. What You Pay if Your License Expires

Georgia lets you renew an expired license within two years of the expiration date at the regular renewal fee. Wait longer than two years and you’ll have to retake and pass the knowledge exam, vision exam, and road skills test as a new applicant, on top of paying the license fee.9Georgia.gov. Renew a Georgia Driver’s License

Most Georgia drivers can renew online for the same fee charged at a service center. You qualify if you’re at least 18, a U.S. citizen, a Georgia resident, and hold a current Georgia REAL ID (look for the gold or black star in the upper right corner of your card). Drivers 64 and older must pass a vision screening at each renewal, which can be done at a service center or submitted on an approved vision report kept on file with DDS.10Georgia Department of Driver Services.
