How Much Is a Road Test in NY: Fees, Surcharges, and Retests

In New York, a road test costs nothing extra on top of what you already paid for your learner permit and license application. That upfront fee runs $64.25 to $92.50 depending on your age, or $73.25 to $102.50 if you live in the New York City metro area, and it covers your first two road test attempts. If you fail both and need more tries, the DMV charges $10 for up to two additional tests on a standard Class D or DJ license.

Why the First Two Tests Are Already Paid For

When you apply for a Class D or DJ driver’s license, you pay a single combined fee that bundles the learner permit, the license itself, and your first two road tests together. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 503 sets the Class D and DJ rate at $3.25 for every six months (or partial six months) your permit and license will be valid, plus a $10 initial application fee that covers up to two written knowledge test attempts.1New York State Senate. The statute says plainly that “no additional fee shall be required of any such applicant to take up to two road tests.”1New York State Senate. Nothing changes hands at the test site on the day you drive.

What You Pay Upfront, by Age

Younger applicants pay less because their license expires sooner and therefore covers fewer six-month periods. The DMV publishes the following fee ranges for original Class D and DJ licenses:2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License and Learner Permit Fees and Refunds

  • Age 16 to 16½: $80.00
  • Age 16½ to 17: $76.75
  • Age 17 to 17½: $92.50
  • Age 17½ to 18: $89.25
  • Age 18 to 18½: $80.00
  • Age 18½ to 21: $76.75 to $80.00
  • Age 21 and older: $64.25 to $67.50

These totals include the application fee, the permit, both knowledge test attempts, both road test attempts, and the license.

The Downstate Surcharge

If you live in the New York City metropolitan area, the DMV adds a Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) surcharge of $1.00 for every six months your permit or license is valid. It applies to residents of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. That adds roughly $8 to $10 to the total, depending on your license term. An applicant 21 or older living in Nassau County, for example, pays $73.25 to $77.50 instead of the $64.25 to $67.50 charged upstate.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. What Extra Attempts Cost

Fail both of the road tests included with your permit and you can keep trying, but you have to pay $10 for up to two more attempts. VTL Section 503 sets the amount at “$10 for up to two tests applied for in order to obtain any license other than a commercial driver’s license.”1New York State Senate. You must wait at least 14 days between a failed test and the next attempt.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Commercial License Fees Work Differently

For a commercial driver’s license (Class A, B, or C), the fee structure is steeper and separate. You pay a $40 road test fee before scheduling a CDL road test, and every additional attempt costs another $40.1New York State Senate. How to Pay for a Retest

To pay the $10 fee for additional non-commercial road test attempts, you need your 9-digit DMV ID number (the Client ID printed near the top of your learner permit) and your date of birth.5New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Once the payment clears, the system generates a confirmation that unlocks the Road Test Scheduling System, where you can browse available dates and testing locations by zip code.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. You cannot schedule a new road test until the fee is paid, and you cannot schedule one on an expired learner permit.
