A standard non-driver state ID in NJ costs $24, and the REAL ID version costs $35. Both are issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, and both are valid for four years, so you’re paying roughly $6 to $9 per year depending on which one you choose.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Standard ID or REAL ID: Which Price Is Right for You
The $11 difference between the two cards comes down to what you plan to use the ID for. A standard $24 non-driver ID handles everyday needs: proving your age, verifying identity at a bank, dealing with state agencies.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Non-driver Identification Card The $35 REAL ID does all of that and is also accepted at TSA airport security checkpoints and certain federal facilities.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Federal REAL ID enforcement is now in effect for domestic air travel. A standard NJ ID alone won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint. TSA does offer a program called ConfirmID that lets travelers without an acceptable ID attempt identity verification for a $45 fee, with no guarantee it will work.3Transportation Security Administration. Fee Waiver for Homeless Residents
New Jersey waives the non-driver ID fee entirely for homeless individuals. To qualify, you need a letter from a social worker or emergency shelter coordinator on official letterhead, dated within 10 days of your MVC visit. The letter must state that you lack permanent and stable housing and include your temporary residence address.6Legal Information Institute. Renewal and Replacement Costs
A New Jersey non-driver ID expires during the fourth calendar year after it was issued, on your birthday. If your birthday doesn’t land on a valid calendar date in that year, the card expires on the last day of your birth month instead.7Justia Law. New Jersey Revised Statutes 39:3-29.5 – Expiration
Renewal costs the same $24 as the original card, and most renewals can be handled online through the MVC website rather than requiring another in-person appointment.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Costs to Avoid: Come Prepared to Your Appointment
The fee itself is only part of the cost. Initial non-driver ID applications must be completed in person by appointment, and if your documents don’t check out, you leave without a card and have to schedule again.8New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. To get the card, you need to be at least 14 years old, live in New Jersey, and not hold a driver’s license from another state.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The card itself isn’t printed at the office. New Jersey uses central issuance and mails the finished card to the address on your application. If you need it faster, the MVC has an emergency expedited issuance program with a minimum processing time of three business days, priced separately from the standard fee.10New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
