A ticket for blocking a driveway in NYC costs $95, the same in all five boroughs.1NYC Department of Finance. The $95 covers the parking violation only. If the car gets towed or the ticket goes unpaid, the real cost climbs quickly.
What Counts as Blocking a Driveway
NYC traffic rules prohibit both standing and parking in front of any public or private driveway.2New York City Rules. NYC Rules Title 34 4-08 – Parking, Stopping, Standing Sitting in the driver’s seat with the engine running does not help you, because standing is separately banned. Even partially blocking the lowered curb where cars enter and exit is enough to earn the ticket.
Two exceptions matter. If you own or rent a property with no more than two dwelling units, you can park your own passenger vehicle in front of your own private driveway, as long as the car is registered to you at that address and you’re not violating any other parking rule. And the prohibition doesn’t apply to driveways that have been rendered unusable by a building or other permanent obstruction. A curb cut leading to a bricked-up wall is not a driveway anyone can use, and that can be a valid defense.
Towing and Storage Add the Most
A vehicle blocking a driveway can be towed, and this is where a $95 ticket turns into a much bigger bill. An NYPD tow of a regular vehicle costs $185, plus a $20 storage charge for every night the car sits in the pound.3New York City Police Department. Towed Vehicles Heavy-duty tows for larger vehicles run $370. Add the parking ticket itself and picking up a regular car after one night runs about $300.
Every additional night stacks another $20 onto the bill.4NYC Department of Finance. Towed Vehicles FAQs Leave the car a week and you’re closer to $420. If the ticket was already in judgment when the vehicle was towed, the city also adds a 5% poundage fee on fines, penalties, and interest.
A property owner can also hire a private tow company instead of going through NYPD. Private rates are set by the company, not the city. Either way, the vehicle owner pays the tow bill.
Paying the Ticket
You can pay a $95 blocked driveway ticket online through CityPay, through the Pay or Dispute mobile app, by mail with a check or money order, or in person at a Department of Finance business center.5NYC Department of Finance. NYC Official Payments Paying resolves the violation and stops any late penalties from accumulating.
Disputing the Ticket
If the ticket was issued in error, request a hearing within 30 days of the violation date to avoid late penalties.6NYC Department of Finance. Dispute a Ticket Hearings can be handled online, by mail, or through the mobile app. You don’t have to appear in person.
You can still request a hearing after 30 days, but a guilty finding will now include the late penalties. Once a ticket enters judgment at roughly 100 days, you can request a hearing only if the ticket is less than one year old. After a year in judgment, the opportunity to fight it is gone.
The strongest defenses to a blocked driveway ticket usually rest on photographic evidence: pictures showing your car wasn’t actually in front of the curb cut, or that the driveway is walled off and no longer functions as a driveway. An administrative law judge reviews the evidence and issues a written decision, generally within a few weeks for online and mail hearings.
What Happens If You Ignore It
Doing nothing is the most expensive option. The city adds late penalties on a stacking schedule:
- After 30 days: $10 added
- After 60 days: another $20 added, for $30 in total penalties
- After 90 days: another $30 added, for $60 in total penalties
At roughly 100 days, the city enters a default judgment for the full amount plus penalties and interest.7NYC.gov. NYC Parking or Camera Tickets Interest then accrues daily at a 9% annual rate on the balance.

- The city can garnish wages.
- Your New York State vehicle registration can be deferred or suspended if you have three or more violations in judgment within 18 months, or five or more within 12 months. The DMV won’t let you register or renew until all judgment debt is cleared.
- The city can restrain bank accounts or place a lien on real property.
A single $95 ticket on its own is unlikely to trigger booting or registration suspension. But unpaid tickets combine, and the $350 booting threshold is easier to cross than most drivers expect.
If Your Own Driveway Is Blocked
If someone parked in front of your driveway on the public street, report the vehicle to NYC311 online or by phone with the color, make, model, and plate.10NYC311. Once the ticket has been issued and affixed to the vehicle, you can arrange removal, either through a private tow company or by asking your local precinct to call the NYPD’s rotation tow service.
You’ll need to give the tow operator written authorization that includes the location and the vehicle’s make, model, color, and plate.11New York City Administrative Code. New York City Administrative Code 19-169 – Removal of Vehicles Parked in Front of a Private Driveway The car must be taken to a storage lot within ten miles of the pickup point, and it cannot be towed if someone is sitting inside.
A different situation: if a vehicle is parked inside your driveway, on your private property, call 911 instead of 311. The city handles that as trespassing, not a parking violation.
