How Much Is an Enhanced License in Michigan? Fees and Renewals

A first-time enhanced driver’s license in Michigan costs $45, whether you are getting your very first Michigan license or upgrading a standard license to the enhanced version. On-time renewals run $38, late renewals $45, and replacements for a lost, stolen, or damaged card cost $24. State law caps the fee at $50, and the current schedule sits under that ceiling.¹

The Full Fee Schedule

Here is what the Michigan Secretary of State charges for the enhanced license and the enhanced state ID card:²

Renewing on time saves you $7 compared to letting the card lapse first. The gap between the on-time and late renewal fee is the same $7 whether you renew a day late or a year late.

Does the $45 Apply If You Already Have a Michigan License?

Yes. The first-time enhanced license fee is $45 regardless of whether you have ever held a Michigan license before. Upgrading from a standard license to the enhanced version counts as a first-time enhanced application and carries the full $45 charge, not a discounted conversion rate.

You do not, however, pay for any driver testing to make the switch. If you already hold a valid Michigan driver’s license, the enhanced version does not require a written knowledge test or a road skills test. Testing only comes into play if you have never been licensed, your license has been expired for more than four years, or you are adding a commercial designation.³

What the Price Covers

The $45 buys a single card that does three jobs. It is your Michigan driver’s license. It meets federal REAL ID standards, so it works at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights without any extra markings; since May 7, 2025, TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant document or acceptable alternative for every passenger 18 and older. And it serves as a border-crossing document for re-entry into the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.³

One boundary to note before you weigh the cost: the enhanced license does not replace a passport for international flights. If you fly to Toronto or Cancún, you still need a passport to board the return flight. The border-crossing authority is limited to land and sea ports of entry.³

How and Where You Pay

First-time enhanced license applications have to be completed in person at a Secretary of State office. Online, mail, and self-service station options are not available for the initial application because staff need to review original documents and conduct a short citizenship interview. You pay the $45 at the office when you apply.³

Appointments can be scheduled up to six months in advance through the Secretary of State’s online portal or by calling 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424). Walk-ins are accommodated when a slot opens, sometimes the same day and sometimes the next business day.⁴ Plan for roughly 20 minutes once your appointment begins.²

The physical card is mailed after your visit. Most applicants have it in two to three weeks, though the Secretary of State advises allowing up to 45 days.³

What Renewals Actually Cost, and When

An enhanced license expires four years from your last birthday. Apply within six months of the current card’s expiration and the new one runs four years from your next birthday. Applicants under 21 get a card that expires on their 21st birthday, unless they apply within six months of turning 21, in which case the card is valid for four years past that date.³

Renewal at $38 is available online, by mail, or at a self-service station most of the time. Every 12 years a new photo is required, and that renewal has to happen at a Secretary of State office. The price does not change based on the renewal channel; what changes it is timing. If you let the card expire before renewing, the fee is $45 instead of $38.²

Replacements and Name Changes

A replacement card for a lost, stolen, or damaged EDL is $24 through the Secretary of State’s office.² A legal name change from marriage, divorce, or a court order is processed at a Secretary of State office; bring the original supporting document. If your name has changed more than once over the years, plan to bring documentation linking each change back to your citizenship document.

How Michigan’s Enhanced License Compares on Price

Against a passport, the enhanced license is cheaper by a wide margin: $45 for the EDL versus $165 for a new adult passport book. The tradeoff is scope. A passport works anywhere in the world for any mode of travel; the enhanced license works at land and sea crossings from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean only. Many frequent border crossers carry both.³
