How Much Is Sales Tax in Washington? Rates, Exemptions, and Vehicles

Washington’s state sales tax is 6.5%, but almost nobody pays only that. Cities, counties, and special districts stack their own rates on top, so the combined tax you actually pay at the register runs from about 7% in rural areas to over 10% in parts of the Puget Sound region. The exact figure depends on where you take delivery of the item or service, not where the seller sits. So the honest answer to how much sales tax is in Washington is: 6.5% plus whatever your local jurisdiction adds.

What Makes Up the Rate

The 6.5% state rate is set by RCW 82.08.020 and applies to every taxable retail sale in Washington.1Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.08.020 – Tax Imposed – Retail Sales – Retail Car Rental On top of that, local governments add percentages that fund transit, criminal justice, emergency communications, affordable housing, and similar services.

The largest local add-on most shoppers encounter is the Regional Transit Authority tax. Inside the Sound Transit district, which covers portions of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, an extra 1.4% is collected on taxable purchases.2Sound Transit. Regional Tax Information Smaller fractions of a percent may go to mental health programs, transportation benefit districts, or stadium construction depending on the city.

Rates change quarterly as local voters approve or repeal levies. Before a large purchase, you can enter a street address or GPS coordinates in the Department of Revenue’s rate lookup to see the exact combined rate for that spot.3Washington Department of Revenue. Sales Tax Rate Lookup

Which Address Sets the Rate

Washington uses destination-based sourcing under RCW 82.32.730, which means the rate is tied to where the buyer receives the goods or services.4Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.32.730 – Sourcing – Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement Walk out of a store with your purchase and the store’s location controls. Have the same store ship it, and the delivery address controls. Online orders follow that same rule: the checkout tax matches the shipping address you enter.

Services delivered at your property work the same way. A painting company based in Olympia painting a house in Tacoma charges the Tacoma rate, because Tacoma is where the customer receives the work.5Cornell Law School. What Is and Isn’t Taxed

Washington’s definition of a retail sale is broad. It covers tangible personal property like clothing, electronics, furniture, and vehicles, plus digital goods and a long list of services.6Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.04.050 – Sale at Retail, Retail Sale

Services

Many states tax only physical goods. Washington taxes services widely. Construction, remodeling, repair, and cleaning work on homes and buildings all carry sales tax, and so do auto maintenance, landscaping, tanning, and personal training.7Washington Department of Revenue. Services Subject to Sales Tax If someone works on your property or provides a personal service, expect sales tax on the bill.

Digital Products

Downloaded music, streamed movies, e-books, streaming subscriptions, and software accessed remotely are all taxed the same as physical goods. That includes digital automated services, where you use an application hosted on the seller’s server. Basic internet access, web hosting, data processing, and standard television and radio broadcasts are not taxed, but a separately charged pay-per-view or on-demand program is.8Washington Department of Revenue. Groceries Versus Prepared Food

Most raw and packaged grocery food bought for home consumption is exempt.9Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.08.0293 – Exemptions – Sales of Food and Food Ingredients for Human Consumption Prepared food is taxable. Food counts as prepared if the seller combines two or more ingredients and sells the result as a single item (with limited exceptions for things like raw meat or deli salads sold by weight), sells food heated or heats it for you, or hands over eating utensils with the food.

Soft drinks, dietary supplements, and bottled water are excluded from the grocery exemption and carry full sales tax. Some retailers whose prepared food sales are less than 75% of total food sales can still sell certain bakery items and multi-serving packages tax-free, provided they do not provide utensils.10Washington Department of Revenue. Prescription Drugs

Drugs dispensed under a prescription from a licensed practitioner are exempt, including medications prescribed for family planning.11Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.08.0281 – Exemptions – Sales of Prescription Drugs Over-the-counter medications bought without a prescription do not qualify. Certain durable medical equipment has separate exemptions that depend on the item and how it is used.

Buying a Vehicle

A vehicle purchase or lease triggers an additional motor vehicle sales and use tax on top of the combined state and local rate. Effective January 1, 2026, that rate is 0.5%.12Washington Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Sales/Use Tax

The trade-in credit softens the blow. When you trade in a vehicle toward another one of the same general type, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the new vehicle’s price and the trade-in value.13Washington State Legislature. WAC 458-20-247 – Trade-Ins, Selling Price, Sellers Tax Measures You can combine two trade-ins toward one purchase. The credit is capped at the purchase price, so if your trade is worth more than the new car, the taxable amount is zero but there is no negative credit. Trade-in and purchase have to be a single transaction, and both vehicles must appear on the sales documents.

Buying From Out of State or Online

If you buy something and no Washington sales tax gets collected, you owe use tax instead. The use tax rate matches the combined sales tax rate where you first use the item.14Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.12.020 – Use Tax Imposed Sales tax already paid to the seller or to another state offsets what you owe. Consumers can report and pay use tax through the Department of Revenue’s My DOR portal or by mailing a Consumer Use Tax Return.15Washington Department of Revenue. Use Tax

In practice, most online purchases already include Washington tax at checkout. Marketplace facilitators such as Amazon, Etsy, and eBay are treated as agents of their third-party sellers and are required to collect and remit sales tax on all taxable sales made through the platform.16Washington State Legislature. Washington Code 82.08.0531 – Marketplace Facilitators Out-of-state sellers that reach $100,000 in Washington-sourced gross receipts in the current or prior calendar year also have to register and collect.17Washington Department of Revenue. Remote Sellers If tax is not shown on your invoice from a smaller out-of-state seller, use tax is still your responsibility.

Refunds for Qualifying Nonresidents

Residents of jurisdictions with little or no general sales tax can apply for a refund of the Washington state portion of sales tax paid on qualifying purchases. Eligible locations are Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, American Samoa, and the Canadian provinces and territories of Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon.18Washington Department of Revenue. State Sales Tax Refund for Qualified Nonresidents

The refund total has to be at least $25, which means roughly $385 or more in pre-tax purchases. One application per calendar year. Several categories are excluded:

  • Lodging and meals consumed during your stay.
  • Motor vehicle repair services, though separately purchased parts may qualify.
  • Recreational and personal services such as entertainment and spa visits.
  • Liquor and cannabis products.
  • Laundry, dry cleaning, parking, and car towing.

Anyone who also maintains a Washington address is not eligible, even if their primary residence is in a qualifying state.
