If you qualify for Supplemental Security Income in Alabama, the maximum federal payment in 2026 is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 per month for an eligible couple.1Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026 Most people receive less, because any other income you have reduces the check dollar-for-dollar after a few exclusions. Alabama does not add anything to the federal payment if you live in your own home; the state supplement only reaches people in licensed personal care homes, foster homes, or certain treatment facilities.
2026 Federal Payment Amounts
SSI is a federal program, so the base rates are the same in Alabama as anywhere else. After the 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment that took effect in January 2026, the maximum monthly amounts are:1Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026
- Eligible individual: $994
- Eligible couple where both qualify: $1,491
- Essential person: $498
Those are ceilings, not averages. One major exception sits well below the ceiling: if you live in a medical facility where Medicaid pays more than half the cost of your care, your SSI drops to $30 per month.2Social Security Administration. Determination of Applicability of $30 Payment Limit The SSA recalculates the base amounts every January using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.3Social Security Administration. Why Your Actual Check Is Probably Smaller
The SSA counts most of your other income and subtracts it from the maximum. Income breaks into two categories: earned income from work and unearned income from sources such as Social Security retirement, SSDI, pensions, or interest.4eCFR. 20 CFR 416.1104 – Income We Count
A few exclusions apply before the subtraction:5Social Security Administration. Income Exclusions for SSI Program
- The first $20 of most monthly income is ignored.
- The first $65 of wages is ignored, plus any unused portion of the $20 general exclusion. After that, only half of your remaining wages count.
Take someone earning $500 a month at a part-time job with no other income. Start with $500. Subtract the $20 general exclusion, leaving $480. Subtract the $65 earned income exclusion, leaving $415. Divide by two, giving $207.50 in countable income. Subtract that from the $994 maximum, and the SSI check lands at roughly $786. The formula is deliberately generous to workers, shielding more than half of what you earn.
Students under 22 who regularly attend school get an even bigger shield. In 2026 the SSA ignores up to $2,410 per month of a student’s wages, with an annual cap of $9,730.6Social Security Administration. Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI A student earning under that monthly figure can keep the full SSI benefit.
Help with living expenses from someone else can also lower your payment. If a family member pays your rent, mortgage, or utilities, the SSA counts a portion of that as “in-kind support and maintenance.” A rule change effective September 30, 2024 removed food from this calculation.7Federal Register. Omitting Food From In-Kind Support and Maintenance Calculations Only shelter-related expenses count now: rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, utilities, and garbage collection. Groceries a relative buys for you no longer affect your check.
Alabama’s State Supplement
Alabama does fund a supplement on top of federal SSI, but only for recipients in specific care settings. It goes to people in licensed personal care homes, foster homes, or certain treatment facilities. If you live in your own house or apartment, the state adds nothing.8Social Security Administration. State Supplementation for SSI Recipients – Alabama
The amount depends on your living arrangement and care level. Alabama groups recipients into categories: personal care home residents, foster home residents, and people in cerebral palsy treatment centers. Within personal care homes, the supplement varies by your assessed level of independence and whether the facility provides your meals and shelter. A licensed physician must recommend the care, and the care provider cannot be an immediate family member.8Social Security Administration. State Supplementation for SSI Recipients – Alabama
The Alabama Department of Human Resources administers the supplement using state funds. Eligibility requires a separate determination by state social workers who evaluate your care needs independently from the federal SSI decision. The supplement often goes directly to the facility to cover room and board.
Resource Limits That Can Reduce Your Payment to Zero
Income is only half the eligibility equation. You also have to stay under the resource ceilings: $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a married couple in 2026. Resources include cash, bank balances, stocks, bonds, and property you do not live in. Your primary home and one vehicle used for transportation are excluded.9Social Security Administration. Who Can Get SSI These limits have not been adjusted for inflation in decades, so even a modest savings cushion can disqualify you.
Two tools help:
- ABLE accounts. If your disability began before age 26, you can open a tax-advantaged ABLE account. The first $100,000 does not count as a resource for SSI purposes. Amounts above that count, and your SSI pauses until the balance drops back under the threshold.10Social Security Administration. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Accounts
- Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS). Money set aside under an approved PASS plan is excluded from both income and resources, letting you save toward a specific work goal without losing benefits.
When Payments Arrive and Whether They’re Taxed
SSI is issued on the first of each month. If the first lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment goes out on the preceding business day.11Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments People who also receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits get the Social Security check on the third of the month and SSI on the first. SSI is not taxable as federal income, so you don’t report it on your tax return.12Internal Revenue Service. Social Security Income
Medicaid Comes With SSI Approval
Alabama is a Section 1634 state, which means SSI approval automatically enrolls you in Alabama Medicaid with no separate application.13Alabama Medicaid Agency. Eligibility Determination Staff and Functions Coverage begins the same month your SSI eligibility starts. For many recipients, Medicaid is worth as much as the cash itself: doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital stays, and long-term care.
If you start working and your earnings eventually push the SSI cash payment to zero, Medicaid can continue under Section 1619(b). You still need to meet the disability standard and all other non-disability SSI rules, need Medicaid to keep working, and earn under the state threshold. Alabama’s 1619(b) earnings threshold for 2026 is $40,026.14Social Security Administration. Continued Medicaid Eligibility (Section 1619(B)) As long as your gross annual earnings stay below that number, Medicaid continues even after the cash benefit stops.
Keep Reporting Changes to Protect the Amount You Get
SSI puts the reporting burden on you. You must notify the SSA within 10 days after the end of any month in which something changes: starting or stopping a job, a shift in wages, a change in living arrangements, gaining or losing a household member, or a change in bank balances. If the SSA keeps paying you at a rate you no longer qualify for, the agency will eventually catch it and demand repayment. The SSA recovers overpayments by reducing future SSI checks, intercepting federal tax refunds, or, in cases involving deliberate concealment, pursuing the debt in federal court.15eCFR. 20 CFR Part 498 – Civil Monetary Penalties, Assessments and Recommended Exclusions Intentionally withholding information that affects eligibility can result in civil penalties of up to $5,000 per omission plus an assessment of up to twice the overpaid amount.
If an overpayment notice arrives and you believe the overpayment wasn’t your fault, you can request a waiver on Form SSA-632-BK. The SSA considers whether repayment would leave you without money for basic living expenses or would otherwise be unfair.16Social Security Administration. Ask Us to Waive an Overpayment Waivers are granted more often than people expect, particularly for recipients with no other income, so filing is worth the effort.
