Hawaii adds a state supplement only for recipients living in licensed care facilities, bringing the total to $1,823 a month in a foster care or small domiciliary care home and $1,931 in a larger domiciliary care home.1Social Security Administration. The 2026 Federal Benefit Rate

Every SSI payment starts from the Federal Benefit Rate. For 2026 that figure is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 a month for a couple when both spouses qualify.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Those numbers are ceilings. Your actual check will be lower if you have countable income.

The Social Security Administration recalculates the rate each January through a Cost-of-Living Adjustment tied to the Consumer Price Index. The 2026 increase was 2.8 percent over 2025.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet

Hawaii’s State Supplement

Hawaii’s supplement is narrow. It goes only to SSI recipients living in community care foster family homes or domiciliary care homes (also called adult residential care homes), and to children on SSI who live in foster care.1Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in Hawaii Everyone else in Hawaii receives the federal benefit rate with no state addition, no matter how high their rent or utility costs run.

Two tiers apply, based on the size of the facility. Combined monthly totals (federal plus state) for 2026 are:1Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in Hawaii

To qualify for either supplement, you need a formal determination that you require the level of care the licensed facility provides. How Income Reduces Your Payment

SSI is reduced dollar-for-dollar by countable income, but not every dollar you receive counts. Several exclusions come off the top first.5Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Income

The first $20 of almost any income you receive each month is ignored. For wages from a job, another $65 is excluded, and then only half of what remains counts.5Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Income Say you earn $317 a month in gross wages. Subtract the $20 general exclusion, then the $65 earned income exclusion, leaving $232. Half of that, $116, is your countable income. That $116 is the amount that reduces your SSI check.

Students under age 22 who attend school regularly get a bigger shield. In 2026, the student earned income exclusion lets you set aside up to $2,410 a month in wages, with an annual cap of $9,730.6Social Security Administration. Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI It applies before the general and earned income exclusions, so many working students keep their full benefit.

Help With Housing From Someone Else

If a family member or friend pays part of your rent, mortgage, utilities, or property taxes, the Social Security Administration counts that assistance as in-kind support and maintenance, and your SSI can drop because of it.7Social Security Administration. Two different rules set the maximum hit. If you live in someone else’s household and they cover all your shelter and meals, the one-third reduction rule applies and your SSI drops by one-third of the federal benefit rate, which is $331.33 in 2026.9Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.1130 – In-Kind Support and Maintenance When someone only partly covers your shelter costs, the presumed maximum value rule caps the counted amount at one-third of the federal benefit rate plus $20, or $351.33, and after the $20 general exclusion the maximum reduction under either rule works out to $331.33 a month.7Social Security Administration. Also effective September 30, 2024, the expanded rental subsidy policy applies nationwide. If you rent and pay at least the presumed maximum value each month, no in-kind support and maintenance is counted, even when market rent is higher than what you actually pay.10Federal Register. Resource Limits That Can Disqualify You

Income is only half the eligibility question. Countable resources cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple in 2026.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Those limits cover bank accounts, cash, stocks, and bonds, and they have not been adjusted for inflation in decades.

Several assets do not count toward the limit:

Medicaid Doesn’t Come Automatically in Hawaii

One Hawaii-specific detail is worth knowing when you plan your budget around SSI: unlike most states, Hawaii does not automatically enroll SSI recipients in Medicaid. The state uses its own eligibility rules, so you have to file a separate application through the Department of Human Services.13Social Security Administration. Medicaid Information Most SSI recipients will qualify, but approval for SSI does not open the door to health coverage on its own.

If someone else manages your SSI funds as a representative payee, a qualified organization serving as payee can charge up to $57 a month in 2026, or $106 a month for certain beneficiaries with substance use conditions.14Social Security Administration. Fee for Services Performed as a Representative Payee That fee comes out of your benefit, so the amount you actually receive each month is smaller than the figures above.
