How Much Is SSI in Michigan: Federal Rate, State Supplement, and Limits

If you qualify for Supplemental Security Income in Michigan, the maximum federal payment in 2026 is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple when both spouses qualify. Michigan adds a state supplement on top, ranging from $14 a month for someone living independently to $157.50 a month for someone in adult foster care or a personal care facility. What you actually receive depends on your income, your living arrangement, and whether you meet the resource limits.

2026 Federal SSI Amounts

The federal portion is the same in every state. For 2026, the Social Security Administration applied a 2.8 percent cost-of-living increase, setting the maximum monthly federal payment at $994 for an individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple.1Federal Register. Cost-of-Living Increase and Other Determinations for 2026 Those are ceilings. Your check only reaches the maximum if you have no countable income and no reductions for who you live with.

The amount is adjusted every January using the same inflation measure Congress uses for Social Security retirement benefits.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 1382f – Cost-of-Living Adjustments in Benefits When inflation is flat, the payment holds. When it rises, so does your check.

Michigan’s State Supplement

Michigan pays a State Supplementary Payment on top of the federal check, and the amount depends entirely on where you live.3Department of Health & Human Services. SSI Payment Levels For an individual:

  • Living independently in your own home or apartment: $14 a month
  • Living in adult foster care, a personal care facility, or a home for the aged: $157.50 a month

The higher amount reflects the cost of supervised care. You do not file a separate application for the supplement. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services uses your federal SSI data to issue it automatically.

Who sends the supplement depends on where you live. If you live independently or in someone else’s household, Michigan DHHS pays it. If you live in adult foster care, a personal care facility, or a home for the aged, the Social Security Administration pays it directly alongside your federal check.4Department of Health & Human Services. The timing is different too. For independent living, Michigan sends the supplement quarterly in March, June, September, and December rather than monthly. You get roughly $42 four times a year instead of $14 every month.

How Your Income Reduces the Payment

Your SSI check is the federal maximum minus your countable income. Not every dollar counts, though. Two exclusions keep part of what you receive from reducing your benefit:

  • The first $20 of any monthly income is excluded. This applies first to unearned income like pensions, Social Security, or cash gifts; any leftover applies to earned income.
  • If you work, the first $65 of monthly wages is excluded, and only half of what remains counts.5eCFR. 20 CFR Part 416 Subpart K – Income

Here is how that plays out. Say you earn $365 in a month and have no other income. The $20 general exclusion drops it to $345. The $65 earned income exclusion drops it to $280. Half of $280 is $140 in countable income. Your federal SSI for the month would be $994 minus $140, or $854. You keep most of what you earn rather than losing benefits dollar for dollar.

How Your Living Situation Reduces the Payment

Where you live and who pays for your shelter can cut the federal check further. The biggest hit comes from the one-third reduction rule: if you live in another person’s household for a full month and that person pays all your shelter costs, the Social Security Administration reduces your federal payment by one-third of the benefit rate.6Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on One Third Reduction Provision At the 2026 rate, that is a $331.33 reduction, bringing your federal payment to $662.67 before any income is counted.

If you get some shelter help from others but the one-third rule does not apply, a different formula called the presumed maximum value is used. The maximum reduction under that rule is one-third of the federal benefit rate plus $20, which comes to $351.33 in 2026.7Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Living Arrangements You can push back on the presumed value by documenting that the actual shelter you receive is worth less.

One useful change took effect September 30, 2024: food no longer counts in these in-kind support calculations. Only shelter expenses matter now, meaning rent, mortgage, utilities, and property taxes.8Federal Register. Omitting Food From In-Kind Support and Maintenance Calculations A relative buying your groceries no longer shrinks your SSI.

If you live in a medical facility where Medicaid pays more than half the cost of your care, the federal SSI payment drops to a maximum of $30 a month, and any countable income you have is subtracted from that $30.9Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 416.414 – Amount of Benefits; Eligible Individual or Eligible Couple in a Medical Treatment Facility The idea is that Medicaid is already covering your room, board, and care, so SSI just supplies spending money.

Resource Limits You Have to Stay Under

Payment amounts assume you qualify, and the resource test disqualifies many people who would otherwise be eligible. Your countable resources cannot exceed $2,000 as an individual or $3,000 as a couple.10Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Countable resources include bank accounts, cash, stocks, and most property you could convert to cash. These limits have not been adjusted for inflation in decades, so modest savings can push you over.

Not everything counts. Your home and the land it sits on are excluded while you live there. One vehicle per household is excluded regardless of value. Household goods and personal belongings are excluded, and so are life insurance policies with a combined face value of $1,500 or less and burial funds up to $1,500 per person.11Social Security Administration. Exceptions to SSI Income and Resource Limits

Giving away assets to get under the limit backfires. If you transfer resources for less than fair market value, the Social Security Administration can impose a penalty period of up to 36 months of ineligibility, and the agency looks back 36 months from your application date to find such transfers.12Social Security Administration. What Is a Resource Transfer A well-meaning family member who moves a parent’s savings into their own name before applying can trigger a long disqualification.

Medicaid Comes Automatically

The dollar amount is not the whole value of SSI in Michigan. Michigan is a Section 1634 state, so SSI approval automatically enrolls you in Medicaid without a separate application. Coverage starts the same month you become eligible for SSI, and it covers hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescriptions that your cash SSI could not cover on its own.

SSI recipients who live alone are also generally categorically eligible for SNAP food benefits. If you live with others who do not receive public assistance, the whole household’s income and resources are used to determine SNAP eligibility rather than just yours.
