If you qualify for Supplemental Security Income in Missouri, the most you can receive in 2026 is $994 a month as an eligible individual or $1,491 a month as an eligible couple. Those are the federal maximums after a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment, and Missouri does not add a general state supplement on top of them. Your actual check can be smaller, sometimes much smaller, depending on your other income, who you live with, and who pays your bills.
2026 Federal Payment Amounts
Every Missouri SSI payment starts with the Federal Benefit Rate. For 2026, the monthly maximums are:
- Eligible individual: $994
- Eligible couple: $1,491
- Essential person: $498
These figures reflect a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment over the 2025 rates of $967 and $1,450.1Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026 The Social Security Administration recalculates them each January using the Consumer Price Index.2Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts
You receive the full amount only if you have no countable income and pay your own share of household expenses. Most Missouri recipients living independently with no other income land at the federal rate, because the state does not supplement the general SSI population.
What Missouri Adds
Missouri funds two kinds of extra payments through the Department of Social Services, both narrowly targeted.
Supplemental Nursing Care
If you receive SSI and live in a licensed care facility, you may qualify for a monthly state payment on top of your federal benefit. The maximum grant depends on the facility type:3Missouri Department of Social Services. Supplemental Nursing Care – Maximum Grants
- Residential Care Facility: $156
- Residential Care Facility II: $292
- Assisted Living Facility (Option 1 or 2): $292
- Intermediate or Skilled Nursing with a Level of Care Determination: $390
- Intermediate or Skilled Nursing without a Level of Care Determination: $292
The facility must document the level of care provided. Because the money comes from state appropriations, the amounts can shift with the legislature.
Blind-Related Payments
Missouri runs two separate programs for people with qualifying visual impairments. Supplemental Aid to the Blind adds payments for people who already receive federal SSI.4Cornell Law Institute. 13 CSR 40-13.015 – Eligibility for Blind Pension The Missouri Blind Pension is a different program, for people who have been found ineligible for federal SSI; by statute it must pay at least $340 per month, with the actual amount set each year by appropriation.5Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 209.040 – Standard of Vision, Vision Test Required, Amount of Payments You cannot collect the Blind Pension and federal SSI at the same time. Applicants must be at least 18, meet specific vision standards, and satisfy Missouri residency rules.
Outside these programs, Missouri does not add a state supplement for people living independently.
How Income Reduces Your Check
The SSA subtracts your countable income from the federal maximum. The rules depend on whether that income is earned (wages) or unearned (Social Security, veterans’ benefits, interest, cash gifts).
Unearned Income
The first $20 of most unearned income each month is excluded.6eCFR. 20 CFR Part 416 Subpart K – Income Every dollar after that reduces your SSI dollar for dollar. If you receive $300 a month in Social Security retirement, your SSI drops by $280.
Earned Income
Wages are treated more generously. The SSA applies these exclusions in order:7eCFR. 20 CFR 416.1112 – Earned Income We Do Not Count
- Any portion of the $20 general exclusion not used against unearned income
- An additional $65 earned income exclusion
- Half of whatever wages remain after those two exclusions
Say you earn $500 a month and have no unearned income. Subtract $20, then $65, leaving $415. Half of that, $207.50, counts as income. Your SSI is $994 minus $207.50, or $786.50. The same $500 arriving as unearned income would have cut your check by $480.
Students Under 22
If you are under 22 and regularly attending school, you can exclude up to $2,410 per month in earned income in 2026, capped at $9,730 for the year.8Social Security Administration. Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI This exclusion comes off the top, before the $65 and one-half rules.
Impairment-Related Work Expenses
If you are disabled and pay out of pocket for items or services you need in order to work, those costs can be deducted from your earned income before the SSA calculates the benefit reduction. Qualifying expenses include disability-related vehicle modifications, service animal costs (purchase, food, veterinary care), prosthetic devices, and hearing aids used for work.
How Your Living Situation Reduces Your Check
Where you live and who pays your bills can shrink your payment even if you have no cash income. The SSA uses two rules to account for help you receive in the form of shelter.
Living in Someone Else’s Household
If you live in another person’s household for a full month and that household provides your shelter without your paying a share, the SSA reduces your federal benefit by exactly one-third.9Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on One Third Reduction Provision In 2026 that reduction is $331.33, dropping an individual’s maximum from $994 to $662.67. No additional shelter reduction is layered on top.10Social Security Administration. POMS SI 00835.200 – The One-Third Reduction Provision Paying your pro rata share of rent, utilities, and food avoids the reduction entirely.
Someone Else Pays Part of Your Shelter
If you live in your own home but a relative or friend covers part of your rent or utilities, the SSA treats that help as in-kind support and maintenance. The reduction is capped at the presumed maximum value, which is one-third of the federal rate plus $20, roughly $351.33 for an individual in 2026.10Social Security Administration. POMS SI 00835.200 – The One-Third Reduction Provision
Food No Longer Counts
As of September 30, 2024, the SSA no longer reduces SSI based on food you receive from others. Only shelter-related help (rent, mortgage, utilities, property taxes, and similar expenses) counts as in-kind support.11Federal Register. Omitting Food From In-Kind Support and Maintenance Calculations A friend buying your groceries will not shrink your check.
Below-Market Rent
Paying discounted rent, including to a family-member landlord, does not automatically trigger an in-kind support reduction. If your required monthly rent equals or exceeds the presumed maximum value, the SSA will not count the gap between your rent and market rate as in-kind support.12Federal Register. Expansion of the Rental Subsidy Policy for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Applicants and Recipients This rental subsidy policy now applies nationwide.
Resource Limits That Can Zero You Out
Even with little income, you lose eligibility for any month your countable resources exceed $2,000 as an individual or $3,000 as a couple.13Social Security Administration. SSI Eligibility Requirements Countable resources include cash, bank accounts, stocks, and most property you could convert to cash. One dollar over the limit on the first of the month means no payment for that month.
A number of assets do not count:14Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources
- The home you live in and the land it sits on
- One vehicle used for transportation, regardless of value
- Household goods and personal effects
- Burial funds up to $1,500 for you and $1,500 for a spouse
- Life insurance with a combined face value of $1,500 or less
- Up to $100,000 in an ABLE account
- Money set aside under a Plan to Achieve Self-Support, if you are blind or disabled
Retroactive SSI or Social Security back payments are excluded for nine months after you receive them, and federal tax refunds are excluded for 12 months.14Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources Those windows give you time to spend the money down before it starts counting against the limit.
If Your Payment Looks Wrong
If the SSA denies you or sets a payment lower than you expected, you have 60 days from the date you receive the decision notice to request a reconsideration in writing. The SSA assumes you received the notice five days after the date printed on it.15Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Appeals Process If you appeal within 10 days of a notice reducing or stopping your current benefits, you can usually keep receiving your existing payment while the appeal is pending. Beyond reconsideration, the process moves to a hearing before an administrative law judge, then an Appeals Council review, then federal court. Missing the 60-day deadline at any step generally ends that level of review.
