In 2026, the maximum Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment in Oklahoma is $994 per month for an eligible individual, based on the federal benefit rate. Oklahoma adds a small state supplement on top, ranging from roughly $36 to $94 per month depending on your living situation. What you actually receive depends on your other income, who pays for your food and shelter, and whether you qualify for the state supplement.1Social Security Administration. The federal benefit rate is the same in every state. For 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 per month for an eligible individual and $1,491 per month for an eligible couple where both spouses qualify.1Social Security Administration. These are ceilings. Any income you receive and certain living arrangements can reduce the amount of your check.
Oklahoma’s State Supplemental Payment
Oklahoma pays its own State Supplemental Payment (SSP) through the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, on top of the federal benefit.3Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Admin Code 340:15-1-1 – Purpose and Legal Basis The amount depends on your category:
- About $36 per month if you live independently and maintain your own household.
- About $44 per month if you are legally blind.
- About $94 per month if you live in a licensed residential care facility, to help offset room and board.
So a recipient living independently with no other income could receive roughly $1,030 per month: $994 federal plus the $36 Oklahoma supplement. The state portion is typically processed alongside your federal SSI application or through a local OKDHS office.
How Your Living Arrangement Changes the Number
If you live in someone else’s household and they provide your food or shelter at no cost, the Social Security Administration applies the one-third reduction rule. Your federal benefit is cut by one-third of the federal rate, roughly $331.33 per month in 2026, on the assumption that your actual living costs are lower.1Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026
This reduction, formally called in-kind support and maintenance, applies only to the federal portion. It does not apply if you pay your fair share of household expenses such as rent, utilities, and groceries. Keep receipts, canceled checks, or a written agreement with the person you live with. Documentation is what prevents the SSA from assuming you’re receiving free support when you aren’t.
How Other Income Reduces Your Payment
Income from other sources lowers your SSI, but not dollar for dollar. The SSA treats earned income (wages) differently from unearned income (such as Social Security disability benefits, pensions, or cash gifts), and sets aside part of each before applying any reduction.
Two exclusions protect part of what you bring in:
- General income exclusion: the first $20 of most monthly income is not counted. The SSA applies this to unearned income first.
- Earned income exclusion: the first $65 of monthly wages is not counted, plus half of everything above $65.
These exclusions can be combined when your only income is wages.4Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Income5Social Security Administration. SSI Only Employment Supports
Here’s how a working recipient’s math looks. Say you earn $385 a month and have no other income:
- Start with $385 in wages.
- Subtract the $20 general exclusion: $365.
- Subtract the $65 earned income exclusion: $300.
- Divide by two: $150 of countable income.
That $150 comes off your potential benefit. If you qualify for the full $994 federal payment plus the $36 Oklahoma supplement, your check that month would be $1,030 minus $150, or $880.1Social Security Administration. SSI Federal Payment Amounts for 2026
Unearned income is treated more harshly. After the $20 general exclusion, each additional dollar of unearned income reduces your SSI by a full dollar.
Students Under 22
If you are under 22, regularly attending school, and not married or a head of household, you can shield much more of your wages. In 2026, the student earned income exclusion lets you exclude up to $2,410 per month, with a yearly cap of $9,730.6Social Security Administration. Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI It is applied before the standard earned income exclusion, so a qualifying student can earn well above the usual thresholds without losing SSI.
Income and Resource Limits That Decide Eligibility
Before any of these amounts matter, you have to be eligible. Two financial lines control that.
For non-blind disabled applicants, the substantial gainful activity (SGA) threshold is $1,690 per month in 2026. Earning more than that generally means the SSA considers you able to work and ineligible for disability-based SSI.7Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity The SGA test does not apply to blind applicants.
Your countable resources also cannot exceed $2,000 as an individual or $3,000 as a couple.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Several significant assets don’t count:
- Your primary residence is fully excluded.
- One vehicle used for transportation is excluded regardless of value.
- Up to $100,000 in an ABLE account does not count against the resource limit.8Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources

What SSI Approval Means for Other Benefits
SSI isn’t the whole picture of what you have to live on. Two other programs matter for most Oklahoma recipients.
Medicaid is not automatic in Oklahoma. Unlike most states, where SSI approval triggers Medicaid enrollment, Oklahoma uses its own eligibility criteria and requires a separate application through the Oklahoma Health Care Authority. SSI approval alone does not guarantee coverage.
SNAP (food assistance) is easier. SSI recipients in Oklahoma are categorically eligible for SNAP, meaning you are not subject to the standard gross or net income tests other applicants face.10Oklahoma.gov. C-3 You still have to apply through OKDHS, but SSI status streamlines the process.
Keep Your Payment Accurate
Changes in income, living arrangements, marital status, or resources must be reported to the SSA no later than the 10th day of the month after the change.11Social Security Administration. Report Changes to Your Situation While on SSI Starting or leaving a job, moving, getting married, or receiving an inheritance can all shift the number on your check. Reporting late is the most common path to an overpayment, which the SSA will recover by cutting future benefits or demanding a refund. Report as soon as the change happens, and keep written records of when you contacted the agency.
