Buying a vehicle in Florida means paying a 6% state sales tax, a county discretionary surtax on the first $5,000 of the price, a title fee of roughly $75 to $85, a one-time $225 initial registration fee if you don’t already hold a Florida plate, and an annual registration charge between $14.50 and $32.50 based on the vehicle’s weight. For a $30,000 car with no trade-in, tax, tag, and title in Florida typically total around $2,100 to $2,200 before you can legally drive it home.
Sales Tax on the Purchase Price
Florida charges a flat 6% sales tax on the full purchase price of any motor vehicle, whether the seller is a dealer or a private party.1Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.05 Counties layer a discretionary surtax on top, ranging from 0% in a few counties up to 2% in the highest. The surtax only applies to the first $5,000 of the price; anything above that threshold is taxed at the 6% state rate alone.2Florida Department of Revenue. Discretionary Sales Surtax Rate Table
A trade-in lowers the taxable amount. If you buy a $25,000 car and trade in a vehicle valued at $8,000, tax is owed on $17,000. Both the state rate and the county surtax apply to that reduced figure.1Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.05
In a private sale, no dealer collects tax on the state’s behalf. You report the price and pay the tax directly at the county tax collector’s office when you apply for the title. Florida can verify the reported price against book value.

The One-Time $225 Initial Registration Fee
If you’re registering a vehicle in Florida and don’t already have a Florida plate to transfer, you owe a one-time $225 initial registration fee.5Florida Senate. Florida Code 320.072 – Additional Fee Imposed on Certain Motor Vehicle Registration Transactions It applies once, per new plate. If you already hold a valid Florida plate from a previous vehicle, you can transfer it and skip the $225 charge.
Annual Registration by Weight
Recurring registration is tied to your vehicle’s net weight. For private-use automobiles:6Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 320.08
- Under 2,500 pounds: $14.50 per year
- 2,500 to under 3,500 pounds: $22.50 per year
- 3,500 pounds or more: $32.50 per year
Net weight appears on the manufacturer’s door sticker and on your prior registration. Most midsize sedans land in the middle tier; larger SUVs and trucks generally sit in the top bracket.
Personalized Plates
A personalized plate, where you pick your own combination of letters and numbers, adds $15 per year on top of the weight-based fee.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Personalized and Specialty License Plates Specialty plates supporting organizations, universities, or causes carry their own use fees that vary by plate.

You Have 30 Days, Then a $20 Penalty
Florida gives you 30 days from the date of sale to apply for a title transfer. Miss it and a $20 late fee is added on top of everything else you owe.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees The clock starts when the vehicle is delivered to you, not when you reach the tax collector’s window.8Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes Title XXIII Chapter 319 Driving an untitled or unregistered vehicle also exposes you to traffic citations.
If You Bought the Vehicle Out of State
Bringing a vehicle to Florida from another state still triggers the 6% Florida sales tax plus your county’s surtax when you title and register here. Florida generally credits the sales tax you already paid to the state of purchase. Pay 4% elsewhere and you owe Florida the remaining 2%. The credit can’t exceed what Florida would have charged, so tax paid above 6% isn’t refunded. Out-of-state vehicles also pay the higher $85.25 title fee instead of the $75.25 in-state transfer rate.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees
