The average SSI payment in California depends on your living situation, but the 2026 maximums are a useful anchor: an individual living independently can receive up to $1,233.94 per month, and an eligible couple up to $2,098.83.1Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in California Most recipients get less than the maximum because any other income you have reduces the check dollar for dollar (or close to it). Your category matters too: aged, disabled, or blind, and whether you live on your own, in someone else’s home, or in a licensed care facility.
Why California Pays More Than the Federal Rate
The federal portion of SSI, called the Federal Benefit Rate, is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple in 2026, after a 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet That amount is the same in every state.
California adds its own State Supplementary Payment on top. For an aged or disabled individual living independently in 2026, the state adds $239.94 to the $994 federal rate, bringing the total to $1,233.94. Blind recipients receive a larger supplement. You don’t apply separately for the state share; the Social Security Administration pays the combined amount in one monthly deposit.1Social Security Administration. 2026 Maximum Payments by Living Arrangement
The amounts below assume you have no other countable income. They come from the SSA’s California SSI publication and reflect the 2026 COLA.1Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in California
Individuals:
- Independent living, aged or disabled: $1,233.94
- Independent living, blind: $1,318.32
- Household of another: $907.87
- Non-medical out-of-home care: $1,626.07
Couples:
- Independent living, aged or disabled: $2,098.83
- Independent living, blind: $2,324.35
- Household of another: $1,609.70
- Non-medical out-of-home care: $3,239.14
The “household of another” rate applies when you live in someone else’s home without paying your full share of food and shelter costs. It’s lower because the free or reduced-cost housing you’re getting is treated as its own form of support. The non-medical out-of-home care rate is the highest because it covers room, board, and care in a licensed residential facility; that money goes to the facility, and the recipient keeps a personal needs allowance from within it.3California Assisted Living Association. Why Your Actual Check Is Usually Smaller
Most Californians on SSI receive less than the maximum because SSA subtracts your countable income from the payment standard for your living arrangement, and what’s left is your check.4Social Security Administration. SSI Income
Unearned Income
Social Security retirement or disability benefits, pensions, annuities, and similar payments count as unearned income. The first $20 per month is excluded. Every dollar of unearned income above that reduces your SSI/SSP by a dollar.5Social Security Administration. Income Exclusions for SSI Program A $400 monthly Social Security check, for example, produces $380 in countable income and cuts your SSI/SSP by that amount.
Earned Income
Wages and self-employment earnings are treated more generously. Any unused portion of the $20 general exclusion applies first. Then SSA excludes the first $65 of earnings. Only half of what remains counts against your payment.5Social Security Administration. Income Exclusions for SSI Program Someone earning $500 a month with no unearned income has just $207.50 in countable income: $500 minus $20, minus $65, divided by two.
In-Kind Support
If someone else pays your rent or lets you live in their home for free or below fair market value, SSA counts that shelter as income. As of late 2024, free food no longer counts, but free shelter still does.6Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Living Arrangements When you live in someone else’s household and don’t pay your share of housing, SSA applies a “presumed maximum value.” For 2026, that presumed value is $351.33 for an individual, which is one-third of the federal rate ($331.33) plus $20.7Social Security Administration. Values for In-Kind Support and Maintenance You can rebut the presumption by proving the actual value is lower, but the burden is on you.
Resource Limits That Determine Eligibility
None of these amounts matter if your resources put you outside the program. To qualify for SSI, countable resources can’t exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple.8Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Resources – 2025 Edition A lot of what you own doesn’t count toward that cap, though. Your home and the land it sits on are excluded while you live there, along with one vehicle per household, most personal belongings, and property you can’t use or sell.9Social Security Administration. Exceptions to SSI Income and Resource Limits You can set aside up to $1,500 per person in a burial fund without it counting, and burial plots for you or immediate family are fully excluded.10eCFR. 20 CFR 416.1231 – Burial Spaces and Certain Funds Set Aside for Burial Expenses
If you or a family member has a disability and holds an ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) savings account, the first $100,000 in that account doesn’t count toward the resource limit.11Social Security Administration. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Accounts It’s one of the few ways to build meaningful savings without losing benefits.
Benefits That Come With the Cash Payment
The monthly check isn’t the only thing SSI provides. Approval brings automatic enrollment in Medi-Cal with no separate application required.1Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in California For many recipients, the health coverage is worth as much as the cash.
Since June 2019, SSI recipients in California can also apply for CalFresh food benefits. Before then, the state “cashed out” food benefits, meaning SSI recipients were shut out of food stamps on the theory that the SSP already covered food. Assembly Bill 1811 changed that, and SSI recipients who meet CalFresh eligibility rules can now get both.12California Department of Social Services. Supplemental Security Income If you haven’t applied, the added monthly food benefit can meaningfully stretch a tight SSI budget.
CAPI for Immigrants Who Don’t Qualify for SSI
If you meet every SSI requirement except U.S. citizenship or qualifying immigration status, California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) can provide equivalent benefits. You have to be 65 or older, blind, or disabled, and your ineligibility for SSI must come solely from your immigration status. The same income and resource limits apply.13California Department of Social Services. Cash Assistance for Immigrants
CAPI payment amounts mirror SSI/SSP. In 2026, an aged or disabled individual living independently receives $1,233.94 per month through CAPI, the same as an SSI recipient in the same situation.14SCCGOV. CAPI Reference Table for January 2026 CAPI is run through county social services offices rather than SSA, so you apply at your local county welfare department.
