What Extra Attempts Cost
If you don’t pass within your first two tries, the DMV won’t let you book a new appointment until you buy another block of attempts. Driving School and Vehicle Costs
For most people the biggest single expense isn’t anything the DMV charges. The road test requires a vehicle with current registration, insurance, and inspection, plus a qualified companion driver. If you don’t have access to a suitable car, or you’d rather show up in a dual-brake vehicle the examiner sees every week, you’re looking at a driving school road test package.
These packages generally run $100 to $250 in New York. They usually include a warm-up lesson before the test, use of the school’s vehicle, and an instructor who acts as your companion driver. Prices skew higher in New York City and the surrounding counties and lower upstate. Some schools bundle the 5-hour pre-licensing course into the package at a small discount.
If you’re bringing your own car, confirm that registration, insurance, and inspection are all current before test day. Examiners check, and they’ll turn you away for anything expired. Loose items in the interior that could roll under the pedals will also get the test called off before it begins.
