How Much Unemployment Will I Get in Iowa Per Week?

Iowa unemployment pays between $93 and $763 per week. To find where you land in that range, the state takes your highest-earning quarter from the base period and divides it by a number between 23 and 19, depending on how many dependents you claim. The result is capped at a maximum tied to the statewide average weekly wage and floored at a minimum for low earners.1Iowa Workforce Development. Monetary Eligibility

The Weekly Benefit Formula

One number drives everything: the total wages you earned in your highest-paid quarter of the base period. Iowa divides that figure by a divisor set by your dependent count.1Iowa Workforce Development. Monetary Eligibility

  • 0 dependents: high-quarter wages ÷ 23
  • 1 dependent: high-quarter wages ÷ 22
  • 2 dependents: high-quarter wages ÷ 21
  • 3 dependents: high-quarter wages ÷ 20
  • 4 or more dependents: high-quarter wages ÷ 19

A worker who earned $9,200 in their best quarter with no dependents would receive $400 per week ($9,200 ÷ 23). The same worker with two dependents would get about $438 per week ($9,200 ÷ 21).2Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 96.3 – Payment Determination Duration Child Support Intercept Each dependent shifts you into a slightly better bracket, and the difference compounds across every week of your claim.

Who Counts as a Dependent

Iowa recognizes two categories. A spouse qualifies if their gross wages were $120 or less per week when you filed. Self-employment income does not count toward that $120 threshold.3Iowa Workforce Development. Unemployment Insurance Frequently Asked Questions Qualifying children generally follow the same definition Iowa uses for state income tax purposes, and you have to actually claim them on your federal return.

Report this accurately. Listing zero dependents when you support a spouse and two children locks you into the least favorable divisor for your whole benefit year. Claiming dependents you do not support triggers fraud provisions that cost more than the extra weekly dollars ever would.

The Maximum and Minimum Weekly Amounts

However high your quarterly wages, Iowa caps your weekly payment. Iowa Workforce Development recalculates the cap every July using the statewide average weekly wage.4Iowa Workforce Development. Iowans Unemployment Benefits to Increase Starting July 6 The current maximums, effective July 6, 2025, are:

  • 0 dependents: $622 per week (53% of statewide average weekly wage)
  • 1 dependent: $646 per week (55%)
  • 2 dependents: $669 per week (57%)
  • 3 dependents: $704 per week (60%)
  • 4 or more dependents: $763 per week (65%)

Minimums protect workers who barely meet the wage test. A claimant with no dependents receives at least $93 per week; someone with four or more dependents gets at least $112.4Iowa Workforce Development. Iowans Unemployment Benefits to Increase Starting July 6 Both figures reset in July 2026.

How Many Weeks You Can Collect

Iowa does not give everyone 16 weeks automatically. Your maximum benefit amount is the lesser of 16 times your weekly benefit or one-third of your total base period wages.1Iowa Workforce Development. Monetary Eligibility That second cap catches people whose earnings were concentrated in one strong quarter.

A claimant with a $400 weekly benefit and $18,000 in total base period wages would have a maximum of $6,000 (one-third of $18,000), not $6,400. That works out to 15 full weeks instead of 16.

One exception raises the ceiling. If your last employer permanently closed, your maximum can rise to 26 times your weekly benefit or half your total base period wages, whichever is less.2Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 96.3 – Payment Determination Duration Child Support Intercept This extended duration applies while the state’s extended benefit “off” indicator is in effect, which is the case under normal economic conditions.

Whether You Qualify at All

Before the formula applies, you have to meet Iowa’s monetary eligibility. Your base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before your filing date. Two tests apply within that window: you need wages in at least two of the four quarters, and your total base period wages must equal at least 1.25 times the wages in your highest quarter.5Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code Chapter 96 If you earned $10,000 in your best quarter, you need at least $12,500 across the four quarters combined.

Workers who received workers’ compensation or indemnity insurance benefits during three or more quarters of the standard base period may qualify under a modified calculation that substitutes earlier quarters. It is narrow and is not a general alternative base period.

What Reduces the Check You Actually Receive

Part-Time Earnings

Working part-time while collecting does not end your claim, but it lowers your payment. Iowa subtracts 25 percent of your weekly benefit amount from your gross part-time wages, and the remainder is deducted from your check. If the deduction exceeds your weekly benefit, you get nothing that week.

Say your weekly benefit is $400. Twenty-five percent, or $100, is disregarded. Earn $250 in a week, the deduction is $150, and you receive $250 in benefits. Earn $500 or more, the deduction wipes out the whole payment. Report every dollar you earn, including gig work.

Severance and Wages in Lieu of Notice

Iowa treats severance pay, dismissal pay, and wages in lieu of notice as fully deductible on a dollar-for-dollar basis. If your employer pays $800 per week in severance and your weekly benefit is $622, you receive no unemployment payment during those weeks. If the severance is less than your weekly benefit, you get the difference.

Workers who negotiated a severance package expecting it to stack with unemployment often find that in Iowa it replaces unemployment. File your claim promptly anyway, because the base period and benefit year are set by your filing date, not by when payments actually start flowing.

Tax Withholding

Unemployment benefits are fully taxable at both federal and Iowa state levels. Iowa Workforce Development sends a Form 1099-G the following January.6Internal Revenue Service.
