For a Michigan unemployment claim filed in 2026, your weekly check equals 4.1% of the wages from your highest-earning calendar quarter, plus $19.33 for each dependent up to five, with a maximum payment of $530 per week.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-27 – Payment of Benefits How much unemployment you will get in Michigan also depends on how long the payments last: benefits run between 14 and 26 weeks, based on your total earnings during the base period the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) uses to build your claim.
The Weekly Benefit Formula
The UIA looks at the four calendar quarters that make up your base period, picks the single quarter where you earned the most, and multiplies those gross wages by 0.041. Then it adds a dependency allowance of $19.33 per qualifying dependent, capped at five dependents, which can add up to $96.65 per week.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-27 – Payment of Benefits
Say your best quarter was $10,000 in gross wages and you have two dependents:
- Base calculation: $10,000 × 0.041 = $410.00
- Dependency allowance: 2 × $19.33 = $38.66
- Weekly benefit: $448.66
With no dependents and an $8,000 best quarter, the math is simply $8,000 × 0.041 = $328 per week.
The 2026 Maximum Weekly Payment
No matter what the formula produces, weekly payments on claims filed in 2026 are capped at $530.2Labor and Economic Opportunity. Unemployment Weekly Benefit Rate Increases January 1, 2026 To hit that ceiling with no dependents, your highest-quarter wages need to be about $12,927. A claimant with five dependents reaches the cap at roughly $10,569 in highest-quarter wages.
The cap is scheduled to rise again. Under Public Act 173 of 2024, it climbed from $362 before 2025 to $446 in 2025 and $530 in 2026, and it is set to reach $614 in 2027.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-27 – Payment of Benefits
How Many Weeks You Can Collect
Duration is a separate calculation from the weekly amount. The UIA takes 43% of your total base-period wages, divides that by your weekly benefit rate, and rounds down to the nearest half week. The result must fall between 14 weeks (the floor) and 26 weeks (the ceiling).1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-27 – Payment of Benefits
An example with $24,000 in total base-period wages and a $410 weekly rate:
- 43% of base-period wages: $24,000 × 0.43 = $10,320
- Divided by weekly rate: $10,320 ÷ $410 = 25.17
- Rounded down: 25 weeks
Your total weeks are set when the claim is established and stay fixed for that benefit year. When you use them up, the claim ends whether or not you have found work.
Do You Earn Enough to Qualify?
The formula above only matters if you meet the UIA’s minimum earnings tests. The agency first looks at a standard base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file.3Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-45 – Base Periods If you file in July 2026, that means April 2025 through March 2026.
For claims filed in 2026, the standard base period requires all three of the following:4State of Michigan. Eligibility Requirements
- At least $5,328 in your single highest-earning quarter
- Total wages across the four quarters equal to at least 1.5 times your highest quarter, or $7,992 at the minimum
- Wages in at least two of the four quarters
If you fall short, the UIA can use an alternate base period made up of the four most recently completed quarters. That path requires higher total earnings: at least 20 times the state average weekly wage, which comes to $26,677.60 for 2026.4State of Michigan. Eligibility Requirements
What Can Reduce Your Weekly Check
Part-Time Earnings
If you work part-time while collecting, Michigan reduces your benefit by 50 cents for every dollar you earn that week.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-27 – Payment of Benefits With a $400 weekly benefit and $200 in earnings, the reduction is $100, leaving a $300 payment plus your $200 in wages, or $500 total.
There is also an overall ceiling. Your benefits plus part-time earnings cannot exceed 1.5 times your weekly benefit rate. In the $400 example, that combined cap is $600, and any earnings that push the total above that are subtracted dollar for dollar. Any week you still receive some benefit counts as one week used from your total allotment.
Severance Pay
Severance reduces or eliminates your benefit for the weeks the payment covers. If the amount allocated to a week is at least 1.5 times your weekly benefit rate, you get nothing for that week.5State of Michigan. How Severance Pay Affects Unemployment Benefits Salary continuation stretched over months generally blocks unemployment until those payments end. A lump-sum severance that your employer does not allocate to specific weeks only reduces benefits in the week it is paid; regular payments resume the following week.
Pension or Retirement Income
If a base-period employer contributed to the retirement plan you are now drawing from, your weekly benefit is cut by the pro rata weekly amount of the pension. If the pension equals or exceeds your full weekly rate, you receive nothing.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 421-27 – Payment of Benefits A retirement plan you funded entirely yourself does not trigger the reduction, and rolling a pension or 401(k) into a qualified IRA also avoids it.
Taxes Come Out of the Total
Unemployment benefits are taxable income on your federal return. You can ask the UIA to withhold a flat 10% from each payment for federal taxes, which prevents a surprise at filing.6U.S. Department of Labor. Withholding Tax Information on UI Benefit Payments The UIA sends a Form 1099-G each January with the totals for the prior year.2Labor and Economic Opportunity. Benefits are generally subject to Michigan state income tax, and you can arrange state withholding through your MiWAM account. Michigan’s city income taxes, however, do not apply to unemployment benefits.7Michigan Legislature.
