How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a CDL in Georgia?

In Georgia, you can get a Commercial Driver’s License at 18, but the CDL age requirement in Georgia is effectively two numbers: 18 to drive commercially inside the state, and 21 to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. What an 18-Year-Old CDL Actually Lets You Do

A CDL issued to a driver between 18 and 20 carries a “Georgia Only” restriction. The phrase is literal. You can haul freight, drive a bus, or operate any commercial motor vehicle your class and endorsements cover, but every mile has to stay inside Georgia’s borders. Crossing a state line in a commercial vehicle while that restriction is on your license is a violation.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Apply for a Commercial (CDL) License (Class A, B, C)

The ceiling isn’t a Georgia preference. Federal regulation at 49 CFR 383.23 bars any state from issuing a CDL valid for interstate operation to anyone under 21, and Georgia’s intrastate-only license for 18-to-20-year-olds is how the state complies.2eCFR. 49 CFR 383.23 – Commercial Drivers License

For a lot of young drivers, that limit shapes the kind of work available. Local and regional carriers that keep loads inside Georgia can hire you at 18. A long-haul carrier running loads to Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, or the Carolinas cannot put you behind the wheel of one of their trucks on those routes until you turn 21, no matter how well you drive.

Turning 21: Removing the Intrastate Restriction

On your 21st birthday or any time after, you can visit a Georgia DDS Customer Service Center and have the “Georgia Only” restriction removed. Once it’s off, your CDL is valid for interstate commerce. There’s no new road test, no new knowledge exam, and no waiting period beyond your actual 21st birthday.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Apply for a Commercial (CDL) License (Class A, B, C)

If you plan to drive interstate the moment you’re eligible, line up the DDS visit near your birthday so you aren’t losing paid driving days to a restriction that’s technically expired.

The One Federal Exception for Under-21 Interstate Driving

There is a narrow pathway that lets some drivers under 21 operate commercial vehicles across state lines: FMCSA’s Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot program. During a probationary period, an apprentice driver can run interstate routes, but only with an experienced, qualified CDL holder in the passenger seat at all times.3Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. FMCSA Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program (SDAP)

Two things to understand about the pilot. It isn’t a licensing shortcut you can pursue on your own; your employer has to be enrolled in the program. And the supervision requirement is not a formality. The experienced driver has to be in the cab with you. For most 18-to-20-year-olds getting their first CDL in Georgia, this exception will not apply, and the practical rule remains: in-state until 21, interstate at 21.

Age Isn’t the Only Gate

Being old enough is the first filter, not the last one. Before Georgia DDS will issue a CDL at any age, you have to clear several other requirements, and some of them take weeks of lead time.

A Georgia Class C License First

You need a valid Georgia Class C driver’s license before you can apply for a Commercial Learner’s Permit or a full CDL. You’ll also bring documents proving your identity, Georgia residential address, and U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. A DOT Medical Exam

Every applicant has to pass a physical performed by a medical examiner listed on FMCSA’s National Registry. The exam covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, and general fitness.4Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical

Georgia changed how the paperwork moves in mid-2025. DDS no longer accepts paper medical certificates. Your examiner uploads results electronically to FMCSA, which transmits them to DDS. You still want to confirm with the examiner that the upload actually happened, because without the electronic record on file, DDS can’t process your CDL.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Entry-Level Driver Training

Since February 2022, federal rules require Entry-Level Driver Training through a provider listed on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry before you can take the CDL skills test. The requirement applies to anyone getting a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding a passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials endorsement for the first time. ELDT has a classroom theory portion and a behind-the-wheel portion, and both have to be completed within one year of starting (hazmat-only is the exception).6eCFR. 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F – Entry-Level Driver Training Requirements

Verify any school you’re considering against the registry before you pay. If the provider isn’t on it, your training won’t satisfy the federal requirement and DDS won’t let you book the skills test.7Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Training Provider Registry – Find a Provider

The Learner’s Permit Waiting Period

Once you pass the written knowledge tests and get your Commercial Learner’s Permit, you have to hold it for at least 14 days before you’re eligible to take the skills test. The CLP itself is good for 365 days, and your ELDT has to be done inside that window.8Georgia Department of Driver Services. How Do I Apply for a Commercial Permit

If you’re planning around your 18th birthday, the sequence matters. You can’t shortcut the 14-day permit hold, you can’t skip ELDT, and you can’t take the skills test until both are satisfied. The earliest realistic license date is two weeks past your permit date, plus however long your training program runs.

Hazmat Adds Its Own Clock

If you want a hazardous materials endorsement, the TSA security threat assessment adds another timeline on top of everything else. TSA recommends starting at least 60 days before you need the endorsement, since processing can take 45 days or longer.9Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement

So the short version of the age rule is simple, and the practical version is a little longer. You can start the process at 18 and drive commercially inside Georgia. You can drive across state lines at 21. And whichever age you qualify at, give yourself room for the medical exam, the training, and the 14-day permit hold before you expect to be working.
