Louisiana sets no minimum or maximum age requirements for food stamps; anyone in a qualifying household can be included, from a newborn to an elderly adult. What age does affect is which rules apply to you. Children count toward household size and raise the income limit. Adults between 18 and 54 who have no dependents face a work requirement. People 60 and older get a more generous resource limit. Everything else about SNAP eligibility, including income and residency, applies the same way regardless of age.1Louisiana Department of Health. Children Count From Birth
There is no minimum age to be included in a Louisiana SNAP household. A baby born last week is a household member the same way a working adult is. That matters because household size drives both the income ceiling you have to fall under and the maximum benefit you can receive. Adding a child to the household raises the gross income limit and increases the potential monthly allotment.1Louisiana Department of Health. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
A single parent with one infant, for example, applies as a two-person household. Under the 2026 figures, that raises the gross monthly income ceiling from roughly $2,660 for one person to roughly $3,607 for two, and lifts the maximum monthly benefit from $298 to $546.2U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 2026 Poverty Guidelines3Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Information
Children of any age must be included in the SNAP application for the household they live in. You cannot leave a child off to change the household size or the numbers that come out of it.
Adults 18 to 54 Without Dependents Face a Work Requirement
The age band that carries the most rules is 18 through 54. Adults in this range who can work and have no dependents are classified as able-bodied adults without dependents, or ABAWDs. To keep receiving SNAP beyond a short window, they must work or take part in a qualifying work or training program for at least 80 hours per month. Anyone in this group who does not meet the requirement can only receive SNAP for three months in a three-year period.4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements
The work does not have to be a paid job. Volunteering, unpaid work, and state or federal training programs all count toward the 80 hours. If you fall out of compliance and lose benefits under the three-month rule, the clock resets once you meet the work requirement for a full month.
Several situations take you out of the ABAWD category even if your age puts you in it:
- You care for a child under six or an incapacitated household member.
- You are pregnant.
- You have a physical or mental condition that limits your ability to work.
If any of these applies, the three-month time limit does not apply to you, regardless of your age.4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements
Adults Under 18 and Over 54
Anyone younger than 18 or older than 54 is outside the ABAWD age band and does not face the 80-hour work rule or the three-month time limit. General eligibility still applies, but the work-related restrictions do not.4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements
Age 60 Raises Your Resource Limit
Turning 60 changes the numbers on the asset side of the eligibility test. Households that are subject to the resource test can normally hold up to $3,000 in countable resources such as cash, bank accounts, certificates of deposit, stocks, and bonds. If at least one household member is 60 or older, or has a disability, the limit rises to $4,500.5Louisiana Department of Health. SNAP Eligibility and Application
Households with a member who receives Supplemental Security Income, the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program, the Kinship Care Subsidy Program, or the Strategies to Empower People Program are exempt from the resource limit entirely. That exemption is lost if any household member has been disqualified for an intentional program violation or for failing to meet work registration rules, at which point the $3,000 or $4,500 cap applies again.1Louisiana Department of Health. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Age 60 also opens the door to deductions for out-of-pocket medical expenses when the benefit amount is calculated, which can increase the monthly allotment for older applicants with health costs.
How Age Shapes Who Counts as One Household
Age changes how the state groups people into households. Adults 18 and older who live together and share meals generally have to apply as a single household, even if they are not related. That means two roommates who cook and eat together typically cannot apply separately.
Children under 18 who live with a parent or guardian are part of that adult’s household. Adult children who move back in with a parent and share meals are usually included in the parent’s household as well, which can push household income above the limit. Whether people share meals is a factual question the state asks during the application, and how you answer determines the household size used for both the income test and the benefit calculation.
Applying in Louisiana
Age does not change how you apply. The fastest route is the LA CAFE Customer Portal, where you can submit an application, upload documents, and check your case status.6Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services. LA CAFE Customer Portal Paper applications are available at any parish DCFS office and can be returned to any parish office.
Whatever your age, you will need to provide:
- Proof of identity, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or other government-issued photo identification
- Proof of Louisiana residency, such as a utility bill or lease
- Proof of income for every household member who earns income
- Proof of countable resources, such as bank statements
The state has 30 days to make an eligibility decision.7Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Application Processing Timeliness Households in urgent need may qualify for expedited benefits within seven calendar days. You qualify for expedited processing if your liquid resources are $100 or less and your gross income for the application month is under $150, if your rent or mortgage and utilities exceed your liquid resources and gross monthly income combined, or if you are a migrant or seasonal farmworker household with liquid resources of $100 or less. Ask for expedited service when you file.
All household members, regardless of age, must be U.S. citizens or qualified non-citizens and must live in Louisiana. Those two requirements apply to a newborn and an 80-year-old the same way. Age itself is never the barrier; it only shifts which of the surrounding rules apply to you.
