How Old Do You Have to Be to Hunt in Florida?

There is no minimum age to hunt in Florida. A child of any age can legally hunt, as long as an adult at least 18 years old is supervising. Licenses and hunter safety certification only enter the picture once the hunter turns 16. So the practical answer to how old you have to be to hunt in Florida is: old enough to handle a weapon safely under an adult’s watch, with the state’s formal rules kicking in at 16.¹

Under 16: No License, But Adult Supervision Required

Children under 16 are exempt from essentially every recreational hunting license and permit Florida issues. That includes the base hunting license, the deer permit, the turkey permit, the wildlife management area permit, and even the federal duck stamp for waterfowl.¹

The trade-off is supervision. Any hunter under 16 has to be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years old. The supervising adult doesn’t need to be a parent or legal guardian. A grandparent, older sibling, aunt, uncle, or family friend who meets the age minimum qualifies.

Florida law doesn’t specify a supervision distance on state-managed land, but the standard on federal National Wildlife Refuges within Florida (such as the Florida Panther, Lake Woodruff, and Merritt Island refuges) requires the supervising adult to stay within sight and normal voice contact of the youth hunter.² Within sight and voice range is a sensible baseline anywhere.

Turning 16: License Required

On a hunter’s 16th birthday, the exemption ends. From that point forward, a valid hunting license is mandatory before heading out.

The base costs:

Resident annual hunting license: $17
Non-resident annual hunting license: $151.50
Non-resident 10-day hunting license: $46.50 (not valid for wild turkey)

Additional permits are sold separately for deer, turkey, waterfowl, and wildlife management areas. Florida bundles most of these into the Gold Sportsman’s License, which runs $98.50 for residents and covers hunting, freshwater and saltwater fishing, and most species permits together.³⁴

Hunter Safety Course Requirement

If you were born on or after June 1, 1975, and you are 16 or older, you must complete a hunter safety course before you can buy a license and hunt unsupervised with a firearm, bow, or crossbow.⁵ Anyone born before that date is grandfathered in.

The FWC designs the course for students 12 and older.⁶ There is no strict minimum age to enroll, but younger children may struggle with the material, which covers firearm safety, wildlife identification, hunting ethics, and responsible outdoor behavior. Students under 18 need a signed release from a parent or guardian, and students under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to any in-person class sessions.

Worth clearing up: law enforcement officers and active military are not exempt from the hunter safety requirement. The FWC states this directly.⁵

Ways to Complete the Course

Online self-paced course (about eight hours) through an FWC-approved provider, followed by an FWC field day. The field day covers hands-on firearm handling, loading and unloading, and shoot-or-don’t-shoot scenarios, and can be attended in person or virtually via Microsoft Teams.

Florida Virtual School Outdoor Education, available to Florida residents ages 12 to 18 in grades 9 through 12. It combines hunting and boating safety and earns half a high school credit.

Once passed, certification is permanent. The card never expires.⁶

Certification Deferral for Older Beginners

Florida’s mentoring program lets a hunter 16 or older who has not yet completed the safety course still buy a license and hunt, provided they are supervised by a qualified adult at least 21 years old. The supervising adult must hold a valid hunting license (or be exempt) and must have completed the hunter safety course (or be exempt from it).⁷

The deferral isn’t permanent. To hunt without a supervisor, the course still has to be completed.

Firearm Possession by Minors

Florida Statute 790.22 generally prohibits firearm possession by anyone under 18, but hunting is a specific exception. Hunters 16 or 17 may possess a firearm while lawfully hunting. Hunters under 16 may also possess a firearm while hunting, but only under adult supervision.⁸

BB guns, air guns, and gas-operated guns follow a slightly different rule. Children under 16 may use them only under the supervision and in the physical presence of an adult acting with the consent of the child’s parent or guardian.⁸

Youth-Only Hunts

The FWC runs several programs where only hunters 15 and younger may harvest game, under adult supervision. These are structured, lower-pressure ways to introduce a child to the field.

Youth Deer Hunt Weekends, held during muzzleloading gun season in each of Florida’s four hunting zones. Only youth 15 and under may harvest deer. No license or permit required for the youth hunter or for supervising adults who aren’t hunting themselves.
Youth Spring Turkey Hunt Weekends, two weekends before the spring turkey season opens (one south and one north of State Road 70). Only youth 15 and under may harvest turkey.
Youth Waterfowl Hunting Days, one before the statewide duck season and one on the second Saturday after it closes.
Family Quota Permit Hunts on many wildlife management areas, letting a permitted adult supervisor hunt alongside up to two youth hunters.

Adults who actually participate in the harvest, rather than only supervising, still need their own license and permits.⁹¹⁰

Optional Youth License

Even though kids under 16 don’t need a license, Florida sells an optional Resident Youth Hunting License for $17. It’s available to youth ages 8 to 15 who have completed hunter safety, and it stays valid until the recipient’s 17th birthday.⁴ A Resident Youth Gold Sportsman’s License is also offered for $100 with additional permits bundled in.

Lifetime Licenses for Young Hunters

Families planning on decades of hunting can lock in a lifetime license at rates that drop the younger the buyer is:

Age 4 or younger: $201.50
Ages 5 to 12: $351.50
Ages 13 and older: $501.50

The Lifetime Hunting License covers the base hunting license plus deer, wildlife management area, archery, muzzleloading gun, crossbow, turkey, and Florida waterfowl permits. A Lifetime Gold Sportsman’s License adds freshwater and saltwater fishing plus snook and lobster permits, priced at $401.50 (age 4 or younger), $701.50 (ages 5 to 12), or $1,001.50 (ages 13 and older).¹¹ At $201.50 for a toddler versus $17 annually starting at 16, the license pays for itself in about 12 years of renewals.

Penalties for Hunting Without a Required License

Once a hunter is 16, skipping the license carries real consequences. Hunting without a valid license is a Level One violation, a noncriminal infraction. First offense: a $50 civil fine plus the cost of the license or permit that should have been carried. A repeat within 36 months bumps the fine to $250 plus the license cost.¹²

The citation can be resolved by buying the license, showing proof of purchase, and paying the civil penalty. Refusing the citation, failing to pay, or missing a court date escalates the matter to a second-degree misdemeanor, which brings potential jail time and higher fines.¹²
