How Soon Can You Renew Your Driver’s License in Texas?

In Texas, you can renew your driver’s license as early as two years before the expiration date printed on it, and you have up to two years after it expires to renew without starting over. That gives most drivers a four-year window around their expiration date to handle the renewal on their own schedule. The standard renewal fee is $32, and many drivers finish the process online in a few minutes.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID

The Two-Year Early Window

The Texas Department of Public Safety opens renewal exactly two years before your license expires.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID Texas licenses always expire on your birthday, so pull yours out and look at the date. Anywhere in the 24 months leading up to that date, you can renew.

For most adults between 18 and 84, a standard Class C license is valid for eight years. Renewing early does not shorten your next term; the new license runs its full period from the current expiration date forward, so there is no penalty for getting it done well ahead of time.

One narrow exception: a commercial driver’s license opens for renewal only one year early, not two. If you hold a CDL, the two-year rule does not apply to you.

The Two-Year Grace Period After Expiration

If your birthday came and went and you forgot, you still have time. Texas lets you renew for up to two years after the expiration date without retaking any tests.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID The fee is the same $32, and if you otherwise qualify for online renewal, you can still use the online portal during this period.

Driving on the expired license during those two years is a separate problem, addressed below. The point here is that the renewal itself is still available to you administratively.

When the Window Closes

Once your license has been expired for more than two years, you lose the ability to renew.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID At that point you have to apply for a new license from scratch, which means retaking both the written knowledge exam and the behind-the-wheel driving test. That is the strongest reason not to let the two-year grace period run out.

How to Renew Once Your Window Opens

Texas offers three renewal channels, and which one you can use depends on your situation more than your preference.

Online

Online renewal through the DPS portal is the fastest option and is available if you are 78 or younger, a U.S. citizen, and renewed in person the last time. Your Social Security number has to be on file with DPS, and you cannot have outstanding tickets, warrants, or a suspended or revoked license.2Texas.gov. Texas Driver License and ID Cards Online Services Eligibility The portal is limited to standard Class C, Class M motorcycle, or Class CM licenses; a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement cannot be renewed online. Payment is by credit card, and you certify that your vision and health have not changed in a way that affects your driving.

By Mail

If DPS sends you a renewal notice with a mail-in option, follow the instructions on the notice.1Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID Not every driver receives that invitation, so check yours before assuming it’s an option. Mail renewal is useful for Texans temporarily out of state.

In Person

An in-person visit is required if you are 79 or older, need to update your photo, have a change in medical condition to report, or are getting a REAL ID for the first time. DPS driver’s license offices are appointment-only; walk-ins are not accepted.3Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments Book through the DPS scheduler before going. Offices in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio often fill weeks out, particularly around the start of school and summer travel.

If your license does not already show a gold star and you want a REAL ID-compliant one, that has to happen in person with proof-of-identity documents. A valid U.S. passport still works at TSA checkpoints for domestic flights, so a REAL ID upgrade is not strictly required if you carry a passport when you fly.4Transportation Security Administration. What Renewal Costs

A standard Class A, B, or C driver’s license renewal is $32 and covers the full eight-year term.5Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Fiscal 2026 Revenue Object 3025 – Drivers License Fees Adding a motorcycle endorsement raises the fee by $11. Drivers 85 and older pay less because their license is only valid for two years. Online renewals take credit cards; in-person offices typically accept credit cards, checks, money orders, and cash.

Age Changes the Timing

The renewal window is the same, but the process shifts as you get older. Drivers 79 and older must renew in person; there is no online or mail option at that age.6Department of Public Safety. Senior Drivers – Age 79 or Older At the office, a specialist reviews your medical history and you take a vision exam. There is no automatic driving test based on age, but the specialist can request a skills evaluation or medical documentation from your doctor if there are concerns.

The license term itself changes at 85. Drivers 79 through 84 still receive an eight-year license. From 85 on, licenses are issued for two years, so renewals and vision checks come around more frequently.6Department of Public Safety. Senior Drivers – Age 79 or Older

Driving After It Expires

Being administratively allowed to renew for two years after expiration is not the same as being allowed to drive on that expired license. Driving with an expired license in Texas is a misdemeanor. A first offense carries a fine of up to $200. A second conviction within a year runs $25 to $200. A third or subsequent conviction within a year of the second can bring $25 to $500 in fines plus 72 hours to six months in county jail.7State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.025 – License to Be Carried and Exhibited on Demand

There is a built-in safety valve. A judge may dismiss the charge if you renew within 20 working days of the citation or before your first court appearance, whichever comes later.8State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.026 – Dismissal of Expired License Charge Dismissal is discretionary, not automatic, but renewing immediately after a stop is the move that keeps that option open.

The cleanest approach is to put a reminder on your calendar a few months before your birthday in your renewal year. The window is wide, the fee is modest, and once you know your license is renewable up to two years early, there is little reason to wait until the last week.
