How to Apply for a Duplicate Title in Florida

To apply for a duplicate title in Florida, complete Form HSMV 82101, bring a government-issued photo ID, and submit it with a $75.25 fee at your county tax collector’s office. You can request Fast Title for same-day pickup by paying an extra $10, or mail the application and receive the printed title by mail. The process differs slightly if your title is held electronically or if the vehicle has an active lien, so confirm which situation applies before you go.

First, Check Whether Your Title Is Electronic or Paper

Florida keeps many titles electronically in the DHSMV database, and an electronic title carries the same legal weight as a paper one.¹ That matters, because if your title is electronic and lien-free, you don’t need a duplicate at all. You can convert it to a paper copy through the MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov for $4.50, and the paper title is mailed to the address on your motor vehicle record within three to four weeks.² You can’t print it at home or pick it up in person after an online request.

If your title status is paper and the physical document is lost, stolen, or destroyed, you must request a duplicate at a county tax collector’s office or service center. There is no online option for this.¹ If you’re not sure which type you have, the tax collector’s office can look it up.

Who Can Sign the Application

Florida law lets two parties request a duplicate: the registered owner of the vehicle, or the holder of a recorded lien. Either one can file independently.³

A power of attorney cannot be used to apply on someone else’s behalf. The only exception is an insurance company processing a total-loss claim.⁴ If you can’t appear in person, your options are to mail the application yourself or to have the lienholder file for you.

What to Fill Out and Bring

The form is HSMV 82101, “Application for Duplicate or Lost in Transit/Reassignment for a Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home or Vessel Title Certificate.” Download it at flhsmv.gov or pick it up at the tax collector’s office.⁴

You’ll need:

The Vehicle Identification Number, current license plate number, year, make, and body type of the vehicle.
An indication of whether the original title was lost, destroyed, or stolen.
Your full legal name and address, matching what appears in state records. Update your address first if it has changed.
A driver license, state ID card, or similar government-issued photo ID.⁴

Lienholders, licensed dealers, insurance companies, and their authorized agents don’t have to prove identity. If a business owns the vehicle and you’re signing for it, bring your own photo ID plus documentation tying you to the company, such as a letter of authorization on company letterhead.

The application is signed under oath. You’re swearing the information is accurate and that you’re legally entitled to receive the duplicate, so review everything before signing.

Where to File and How Much It Costs

Submit the completed form to your local county tax collector’s office. You have two paths.

In Person With Fast Title

If you need the title immediately, ask for Fast Title service at the counter. The office prints and hands you the certificate during your visit for an extra $10 on top of the standard fee. Fast Title must be requested in person.⁵

Standard Processing by Mail

You can also mail the application and payment. The duplicate is then printed and mailed to you. A $2.50 handling fee applies when a paper title is mailed from the department.⁵ Build in time for mailing both directions, and if the title hasn’t arrived after a few weeks, call the tax collector’s office to verify the address on file.

The Fees at a Glance

The standard duplicate title fee is $75.25 for an electronic title.⁵ Add $2.50 if you want a paper title mailed, or $10 for Fast Title in person.

One waiver worth knowing: a surviving spouse removing a deceased co-owner from a jointly held title, or transferring a deceased spouse’s vehicle into their own name, pays no fee except the Fast Title surcharge if they choose that option.⁶

Once your duplicate is issued, the previous certificate is invalidated in the statewide system, and the new document is stamped “duplicate copy” across its face.³

If Your Vehicle Has an Active Lien

You can still apply, but the printed duplicate will be mailed to the first lienholder on record unless the lienholder checks a box on Form 82101 authorizing delivery to you instead.⁴ Call your lender before filing so they know the request is coming.

If the loan is paid off but the lien still shows on your record, the lienholder needs to submit a lien satisfaction before you can get a clean title. Florida requires lienholders to file Form HSMV 82260 within ten days of final payment on a motor vehicle.⁷ For electronic liens, the release is transmitted electronically between the lender and DHSMV. Once the lien is released, the title remains electronic until you request a paper copy.¹

If a Title the State Mailed Never Arrived

A title lost in the mail is treated differently from one you misplaced. If the department mailed an original, duplicate, or corrected title and it never reached you, you can apply for reissuance within 180 days of the issue date, and no additional fee is charged, either by the department or the tax collector.³ Form HSMV 82101 includes a “Lost in Transit” option alongside the standard duplicate request.

If the Original Turns Up After You Get the Duplicate

You’re legally required to surrender the original certificate to the department for cancellation once a duplicate has been issued.³ Don’t hold on to both.

Penalties for False Statements

Because the application is sworn, false information carries real consequences. Using a false name, false address, or any false statement on a title application is a third-degree felony in Florida, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.⁸ The department also runs verification checks when the address on a duplicate application differs from the one already on record.³ Make sure your information is current and correct before you sign.
