To apply for a lost title online in Alabama, use the Department of Revenue’s Public Title Portal at mydmv.revenue.alabama.gov. The state fee is $15.00, the application takes a few minutes if your information is ready, and the replacement itself arrives by mail because it’s printed on tamper-resistant security paper.1Alabama Department of Revenue. How Do I Apply for a Replacement Title?
What You Need Before You Open the Portal
The online form asks for the same information as Alabama’s paper Form MVT 12-1. Have these ready:
- The 17-character Vehicle Identification Number from the dashboard or driver-side door jamb.
- The current Alabama license plate number tied to the vehicle.
- Your Alabama driver’s license number, or the federal employer identification number if the vehicle is owned by a business.
- The reason a replacement is needed: lost, stolen, mutilated, or illegible.
- Lienholder name, address, and lien recording date, if a lender still holds a lien.
Everything must match the name and address already on file in the state’s registration system. A mismatch is the most common reason the portal rejects an application, and it usually traces back to a move that was never reported to the Motor Vehicle Division.
Filing Through the Public Title Portal
Only the titled owner or the recorded lienholder can file electronically.1Alabama Department of Revenue. How Do I Apply for a Replacement Title? The portal is linked from the Motor Vehicle section of the Department of Revenue’s homepage.2Alabama Department of Revenue. Title Applications
Enter your VIN and plate number so the system can pull your existing record. Verify the owner details, pick your reason for the replacement, and confirm. The application is uploaded electronically and routes you to a secure payment page for credit card or electronic check. Once you pay, save or print the confirmation. That transaction ID is your only proof the request is in the state’s queue until the physical title arrives.
Where the Replacement Gets Mailed
If no lien is recorded, the title goes to the address on your registration record. You can request a different mailing address using the special mailing section on Form MVT 12-1, but that option only exists for lien-free vehicles.3Coosa County Alabama. MVT 12-1 Application for Replacement Title
If a lienholder is recorded, Alabama law sends the replacement title directly to the first lienholder. There are no exceptions and no special mailing option.4Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code Rule 810-5-75-.15 – Application for Replacement Certificate of Title People who paid off a loan years ago but never had the lien released are often surprised to learn the title is on its way to a lender they no longer deal with. Clear the lien from the record before you apply.
Update Your Address First
The registration system does not update automatically when you file a change of address with the post office. If you’ve moved and haven’t told the Motor Vehicle Division, the replacement title will be mailed to your old home. Alabama gives you 30 days after a move to update your registration address; take care of that with your local county Motor Vehicle Division office before filing the replacement application.
Vehicles the State Won’t Replace
Some vehicles fall outside Alabama’s titling system entirely, so no replacement title can be issued for them:3Coosa County Alabama. MVT 12-1 Application for Replacement Title
- Motor vehicles over 35 model years old (a car from 1991 or earlier, as of January 1, 2012).
- Manufactured homes, trailers, semi-trailers, travel trailers, and folding or collapsible camping trailers over 20 model years old, exempt since January 1, 2012.
- Low-speed vehicles, exempt from titling since January 1, 2012.
Ownership of these vehicles can still be proven other ways, such as a bill of sale, but the certificate-of-title process isn’t available.
When You Have to Go In Person Instead
If the original title is mutilated or illegible rather than lost, you must turn in the damaged document with your application, which means going to your local county licensing office and filing the paper Form MVT 12-1.3Coosa County Alabama. MVT 12-1 Application for Replacement Title The $15.00 state fee still applies, and some counties add a small processing fee. The state form specifies certified funds payable to the Alabama Department of Revenue, so call your county before showing up with a personal check.
The in-person route is also the fallback if the portal keeps rejecting your application because of mismatched records or other data problems.
Paid-Off Loans and Old Liens
If your loan is paid off but the lien is still on the title record, the lienholder needs to complete Form MVT 5-63 or provide a release on company letterhead showing the full VIN, the owner’s name, a statement that the lien is satisfied along with the release date, and the signature of an authorized representative.5Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code Rule 810-5-75-.21 – Lien or Security Interest Releases and Continuous Perfection of Lien or Security Interests
If the lender is out of business, most vehicles under 12,000 pounds qualify for an alternative: an affidavit stating the lien is satisfied and the lienholder is defunct, evidence the debt was paid, and an unopened certified mail envelope showing you tried to reach the lender at their last known address. That package accompanies the replacement title application.5Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code Rule 810-5-75-.21 – Lien or Security Interest Releases and Continuous Perfection of Lien or Security Interests
Alabama also treats very old liens as satisfied automatically without any paperwork. For standard motor vehicles under 12,000 pounds, that happens 12 years after the date of the security agreement. For vehicles that are 12 or more model years old, it happens after just four years. Travel trailers, manufactured homes, and vehicles over 12,000 pounds don’t get these automatic cutoffs.5Alabama Administrative Code. New liens cannot be added onto a replacement title. If you’re trying to use the vehicle as collateral for a new loan, resolve the existing lien situation first and go through a fresh title application.3Coosa County Alabama. MVT 12-1 Application for Replacement Title
How Long It Takes and What Arrives
There is no instant download. The replacement is a physical document on security paper, so it has to be printed and mailed. The Department of Revenue does not publish an official timeline. If a significant amount of time passes with no title, contact the licensing agent who processed your application.
Two things happen the moment the replacement is issued. Your original title is automatically voided, so if the missing one turns up in a drawer later, you can’t use it and are legally required to return it to the Department of Revenue. The replacement also carries a printed legend stating it “may be subject to the rights of a person under the original certificate of title.”3Coosa County Alabama. MVT 12-1 Application for Replacement Title The wording is standard and shouldn’t create trouble in a normal sale, but buyers sometimes ask about it.
The $15.00 fee is non-refundable, including if the application is later denied.6Alabama Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Certificate of Title Fee
If Someone Else Is Filing for You
The titled owner can appoint someone to file the application using Alabama Form MVT 5-13, a power of attorney that must specifically authorize the agent for “title application, transfer or lien filing.” Both the owner and the agent sign in original ink, and a business owner needs an authorized representative’s signature. Any correction, whiteout, or strikeout voids the form, so complete it carefully.7Alabama Department of Revenue. Power of Attorney MVT 5-13
If the Owner Has Died
A missing title on a deceased person’s vehicle isn’t a simple replacement; it’s a replacement combined with a transfer, and the documents depend on whether the title was held individually or jointly and whether the estate is in probate. At minimum, expect to need the original death certificate, a valid photo ID, and proof of insurance from an Alabama-licensed carrier. For a sole owner without probate, Form MVT 5-6 (next of kin) is typically required. For an estate in probate, the executor signs and attaches the Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration. For joint ownership, the conjunction between the names on the title (“or” and “and/or” versus “and”) controls whether the surviving owner can transfer directly or has to go through the estate.8Shelby County, AL – Official Website.
