How to Apply for a Pell Grant in Texas: FAFSA, Deadlines, and Payout

To apply for a Pell Grant in Texas, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov using your 2024 federal tax return and list the Texas colleges you want to receive your information. The 2026–27 FAFSA opened on September 24, 2025, and the federal deadline is June 30, 2027, but Texas schools set much earlier priority deadlines that you should treat as your real cutoff.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form For 2026–27, Pell awards range from $740 to $7,395 depending on your financial situation, enrollment level, and cost of attendance, and the money does not have to be repaid under normal circumstances.2Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts

Who Qualifies

A Pell Grant is for undergraduates who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. You need a Student Aid Index (SAI) below $14,790 for 2026–27, a valid Social Security number, and status as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or eligible non-citizen.2Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts You also have to attend a Texas college that participates in federal student aid and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress, which generally means at least a 2.0 GPA and completion of a minimum share of your attempted credit hours.3Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. Two old rules no longer apply. Drug convictions received while on aid and failure to register with Selective Service were both removed as eligibility barriers by the FAFSA Simplification Act, so neither affects your 2026–27 Pell Grant.4Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. What to Gather Before You Start

Pull these together before you open the form:

  • Your Social Security number, or Alien Registration number if you are an eligible non-citizen.
  • Your 2024 federal income tax return. The FAFSA uses tax data from two years before the academic year, so 2026–27 pulls from 2024.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form
  • Records of any untaxed income, such as child support received.
  • Current balances for checking and savings accounts, plus the value of any investments including stocks, bonds, or real estate other than your primary home.5Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Checklist: What Students Need
  • Federal school codes for every Texas college you want your FAFSA sent to.

Tax information now transfers directly from the IRS into the FAFSA once you and any other contributors grant consent on the form. You still want your return in front of you so you can verify what imports and answer the follow-up questions.5Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Checklist: What Students Need

Dependency and Parent Information

Whether the FAFSA treats you as dependent or independent drives how much Pell you receive, because dependent students must include a parent’s financial information in the SAI calculation.

For 2026–27, you are generally dependent if you were born after 2002, you are single and never married, you are an undergraduate, and no special independence criteria apply. You are automatically independent if any of these apply: you will be 24 or older by December 31, 2026; you are married; you are a veteran or active-duty service member; you have legal dependents you support; you were in foster care or a ward of the court; or you are an emancipated minor.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form

The FAFSA defines a legal parent as a biological or adoptive parent only. Grandparents, foster parents, and legal guardians do not count unless they have legally adopted you. If you are dependent on paper but cannot safely contact a parent because of abuse, abandonment, or similar circumstances, your school’s financial aid office can grant a dependency override and treat you as independent. You will need documentation such as a letter from a counselor, social worker, or other third party who knows your situation. A parent simply refusing to pay for college is not enough on its own.

Filing the FAFSA Step by Step

Create an FSA ID at studentaid.gov if you do not already have one. The username and password serve as your electronic signature. If you are a dependent student, your parent needs their own FSA ID too, as does a parent’s spouse or partner if they are a contributor.6Federal Student Aid. How Do I Sign the FAFSA Form

Log in and select the 2026–27 FAFSA. Work through personal information, dependency questions, consent to the IRS data transfer, and asset reporting. When you reach the school selection section, add the federal school codes for each Texas institution. The University of Texas at Austin uses code 003658, and Texas A&M University uses code 003632. You can look up any school’s code inside the FAFSA itself.

Every required contributor has to sign separately with their own FSA ID. The form cannot be fully processed and no SAI can be calculated until all signatures are in.6Federal Student Aid. How Do I Sign the FAFSA Form

The Deadlines That Actually Matter in Texas

The federal cutoff is June 30, 2027. Ignore it. In Texas, the deadline you have to meet is your school’s priority date, because state and institutional aid pools run out well before the federal window closes. Some Texas schools set a priority FAFSA date as early as January 15; others use March 1 or March 15.7Texas State University. Important Dates – Financial Aid and Scholarships Check each school’s financial aid website for its exact date.

Filing by the priority date matters for more than Pell. It also determines whether you have a shot at the TEXAS Grant, a state program for Texas residents at public universities who enroll at least three-quarter time and demonstrate financial need. For fiscal year 2026 the TEXAS Grant can provide up to $5,429 per semester, and it is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis once you qualify.8Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. After You Submit

You will see a confirmation page showing your completion date and an estimated SAI, and you will get a confirmation email. Save both as your proof the application was received.9Federal Student Aid. How Can I Tell if the FAFSA Form Was Submitted Successfully

Within one to three days of online submission, the Department of Education produces a FAFSA Submission Summary that recaps your entries and displays your calculated SAI. Review it. An incorrect income figure or household size can change your grant amount significantly, and corrections are made by logging back into studentaid.gov.10Federal Student Aid. How to Review and Correct Your FAFSA Form Your data goes automatically to every school you listed, and each school’s aid office builds your package from there.

Some students are selected for verification, where the school confirms your FAFSA information is accurate. Selection can be random or triggered by inconsistencies, and it does not mean you did anything wrong.11Federal Student Aid. How to Review and Correct Your FAFSA Form – Section: Provide Required Verification If you are picked, your school will ask for supporting documents such as a tax transcript or a household size statement. Submit them by the school’s deadline. Miss it and you lose your Pell Grant for that year.

How Much You Will Get and How It Reaches You

Your Pell amount depends on your SAI, your school’s cost of attendance, and how many credit hours you take. The maximum scheduled 2026–27 award of $7,395 goes to students with the greatest financial need who enroll full-time for a full academic year.2Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts

If you take fewer than 12 credit hours in a semester, your award is prorated by enrollment intensity. Divide your credit hours by 12 and multiply by your scheduled award. At 12 hours you receive 100%, at 9 hours 75%, and at 6 hours 50%.12Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. Pell Grant Enrollment Intensity and Cost of Attendance An 8-hour load works out to roughly 67% of the full amount.

If you add summer classes to fall and spring, you can receive up to 150% of your scheduled award in one academic year. The summer piece generally requires that you used your full scheduled award during fall and spring and are enrolled at least half-time during the summer payment period.2Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts

Your school handles disbursement. Funds are applied first to tuition and mandatory fees on your student account. Anything left over is refunded to you by check or direct deposit and can go toward textbooks, transportation, or other education costs. Most Texas schools disburse aid about ten days before each semester starts. A FAFSA still in processing or verification when classes begin will delay your money until those steps finish.

If Your Family’s Finances Have Changed

Because the FAFSA uses income from two years back, it may not reflect what your household actually looks like now. If you have had a job loss, a divorce, a death in the family, or another significant drop in income, ask your school’s financial aid administrator for a professional judgment review. The administrator can adjust the data elements that feed your SAI, which can increase your Pell Grant or make you eligible for one when you otherwise would not qualify. You will need documentation such as a termination letter, unemployment records, or a divorce decree. The administrator’s decision is final.

Professional judgment also covers unusual family situations such as parental abuse, parents whose whereabouts are unknown, parental incarceration, or long-term abandonment with no financial support or contact for a year or more. In those cases the administrator can override your dependency status entirely so you do not have to supply parent information.

If You Cannot File the FAFSA

If you are a Texas resident who is not eligible to file the FAFSA because of your citizenship or immigration status, you can file the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) instead. The TASFA is accepted at public and private nonprofit colleges across Texas, but it opens the door to state-funded aid only and does not qualify you for a federal Pell Grant.13Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
