How to Apply for Alabama SOA Hunts: CID, Registration, and Draw

To apply for Alabama SOA hunts, buy a current Alabama hunting license and WMA license, then register free of charge through the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources online portal using your Conservation Identification Number during the posted application window for the species you want to hunt. Spots are awarded by random lottery, and if you’re drawn you have a short window to accept the permit before it rolls to an alternate.

Special Opportunity Area hunts are limited-quota hunts on smaller managed tracts, with each permit holder assigned a dedicated unit of roughly 300 to 400 acres for a two- to four-day hunt.1Outdoor Alabama. Special Opportunity Areas Draws are competitive, so the paperwork needs to be right before the window opens.

Get Your Licenses and CID First

You cannot register for a draw without a Conservation Identification Number. The CID is a permanent, free number that stays with you for life. Residents receive one automatically when they buy a hunting license. Non-residents who don’t already hold an Alabama license can get a free “DCNR Registration Privilege” license through the state’s licensing page, which assigns a CID.2Outdoor Alabama. • Small game and turkey hunts: registration typically opens December 1 and closes December 15.1Outdoor Alabama. Special Opportunity Areas

Exact dates shift from year to year. Watch the Outdoor Alabama site as the season approaches, because missing the window means waiting another year.

The Draw and Accepting Your Permit

After registration closes, the system runs a random lottery in which every applicant has an equal chance. You’ll get an email after the draw telling you that you’re a Hunter (selected), an Alternate (waitlisted), or Not Selected.6Outdoor Alabama. SOA Frequently Asked Questions

Being drawn is not the same as holding the permit. Selected hunters must actively accept through the portal’s “My Hunts” page within either 48 or 72 hours, depending on the hunt type. Miss that window and the system automatically declines on your behalf and promotes the first alternate.6Outdoor Alabama. SOA Frequently Asked Questions7Alabama State Parks. Entering other units or scouting outside the approved window is prohibited, and some hunts, such as youth squirrel hunts, allow no pre-hunt scouting at all.10Outdoor Alabama. Fred T.
