Apply for Disability Benefits Once you file, your claim is sent to Georgia’s Disability Adjudication Services (DAS), which reviews your medical evidence and issues an initial decision in roughly three to six months.2Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. Disability Adjudication Services Information The steps below walk through which program to apply for, what to gather, how to submit, and what to expect after.
Decide Which Program You’re Applying For
Social Security runs two disability programs, and your work history and finances determine which one fits. You can apply for both in the same session if you may qualify for each.
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is for people who have worked and paid Social Security payroll taxes long enough to be insured. Most adults need 40 work credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years; younger workers can qualify with fewer.3Social Security Administration. How Does Someone Become Eligible – Disability Benefits SSDI has a mandatory five-month waiting period, so your first payment arrives in the sixth full month after your disability began. ALS is the one exception with no waiting period.4Social Security Administration. Is There a Waiting Period for Social Security Disability Insurance You may be eligible for retroactive benefits going back up to 12 months before your application date.5Social Security Administration. POMS GN 00204.030 – Retroactivity for Title II Benefits
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is needs-based and does not require a work history. Countable resources must stay under $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple; your primary home and one vehicle generally don’t count.6Social Security Administration. SSI Resources7Social Security Administration. Exceptions to SSI Income and Resource Limits SSI has no five-month waiting period, but it also pays nothing for months before you filed.8Social Security Administration. POMS DI 25501.370 – The Established Onset Date for Title XVI Claims Georgia adds a small state supplement to the federal SSI payment, administered by the state rather than by Social Security.9Social Security Administration. Both programs use the same medical standard: a physical or mental condition that prevents substantial work and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.10Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 404-1505 – Basic Definition of Disability If you’re currently earning above Social Security’s Substantial Gainful Activity threshold, the agency generally won’t consider you disabled regardless of diagnosis.11Social Security Administration. Gather Your Documents Before You Start
Having everything in one place before you open the application prevents the most common cause of delay: back-and-forth requests for missing information.
Identity and Personal Information
Every claim requires your Social Security number and those of any qualifying dependents or spouse, your birth certificate or other proof of birth, and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status if you weren’t born in the United States.12Social Security Administration. Form SSA-16 – Information You Need to Apply for Disability Benefits Photocopies of W-2s and medical documents are accepted, but Social Security typically wants originals of identity documents and returns them after review. If you’ve been married, have the dates of marriage and any divorce ready.
Financial Records If You’re Filing for SSI
SSI applications ask for a full financial picture. Pull together:
- Account and routing numbers for every checking and savings account you hold.
- Records of household income, including wages, other government benefits, and financial support you receive from others.
- Titles, deeds, or appraisals for any real estate beyond your primary home, additional vehicles, stocks, life insurance policies, or other valuable property.
You’ll also need bank information to set up direct deposit or a Direct Express debit card, since Social Security pays electronically.13Social Security Administration. Get Your Payments Electronically If property pushes you above the $2,000 resource limit but you’re actively trying to sell it, ask your local Social Security office about the Agreement to Sell Property form, which can allow conditional SSI benefits in the meantime.6Social Security Administration. Medical Records and Provider List
Your medical evidence is the foundation of the claim. Make a list of every doctor, specialist, therapist, clinic, and hospital that has treated you for your condition, and for each one write down the facility name, mailing address, phone number for the medical records department, and the dates of your first and most recent visits. The state examiner uses this list to request records directly.2Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. Disability Adjudication Services Information
Gather any lab results, imaging reports (MRIs, CT scans, X-rays), and hospital discharge summaries you already have. You’re required to submit or disclose all evidence related to your disability, and that duty continues through appeals.14Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 404-1512 – Responsibility for Evidence Also list every prescription and over-the-counter medication you take, with the dosage, the reason, and the prescribing doctor; this goes on the Disability Report (Form SSA-3368).15Social Security Administration. Form SSA-3368-BK – Disability Report – Adult
Work History
The Disability Report asks about jobs held in the five years before you stopped working, and Social Security’s broader vocational review looks at work going back 15 years.16Social Security Administration. Code of Federal Regulations 404-1560 – When We Will Consider Whether You Are Able to Do the Work You Have Done in the Past For each job, note the title, dates, and daily tasks: the heaviest weight you lifted, hours spent standing or walking, and whether the work involved bending, reaching, or repetitive motion. The Work History Report (Form SSA-3369) focuses on these physical and mental demands.17Social Security Administration. Form SSA-3369-BK – Work History Report Detail matters here: if Social Security decides you can’t return to your past work, this record is what it uses to decide whether any other job exists that you could still perform.
Submit Your Application
You have three ways to file in Georgia:
- Online at ssa.gov. The application is available around the clock. You can upload supporting documents and sign with a secure click-to-sign feature.1Social Security Administration. Apply for Disability Benefits
- By phone at 1-800-772-1213. A representative will schedule an interview, record your answers, and file the forms for you. This is useful if you have questions as you go.
- In person at a Georgia field office. Offices operate in cities including Atlanta, Macon, and Augusta. Call ahead to schedule an appointment; walking in without one usually means a long wait.
Whichever method you use, filing establishes a protective filing date. For SSDI, that date sets how far back retroactive benefits can reach — up to 12 months before you filed, minus the five-month waiting period.5Social Security Administration. POMS GN 00204.030 – Retroactivity for Title II Benefits For SSI, the protective filing date is the earliest month you can be paid at all.8Social Security Administration. POMS DI 25501.370 – The Established Onset Date for Title XVI Claims Filing sooner protects more potential back pay.
What Happens After You File
Once your application reaches Social Security, the medical portion is sent to Georgia’s Disability Adjudication Services, part of the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency.2Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. Disability Adjudication Services Information DAS is a state agency funded entirely by Social Security.18Social Security Administration. Disability Determination Process A disability examiner is assigned to your file and requests records from each provider you listed.
An initial decision usually takes three to six months, depending on how quickly your providers respond and how complex your case is. If the records aren’t enough for a clear decision, DAS may schedule a consultative examination — a one-time evaluation with a doctor or psychologist chosen by the state, at no cost to you.19Social Security Administration. Part III – Consultative Examination Guidelines Missing this appointment can lead to a denial based on insufficient evidence, so attend it if it’s scheduled.
The written decision arrives by mail. If you have a my Social Security account, you can also check status online.
Faster Processing for Severe Conditions
Some cases move much faster than the standard timeline. Social Security automatically flags applications when the medical evidence matches one of two programs:
- Compassionate Allowances covers hundreds of conditions that clearly meet the disability standard, including ALS, certain aggressive cancers, and rare genetic disorders. If your diagnosis is on the list, the application is fast-tracked without a special request.20Social Security Administration. Complete List of Conditions – Compassionate Allowances
- Terminal Illness (TERI) processing applies when a condition is untreatable and expected to result in death, including people in hospice, those awaiting a heart or lung transplant, and those with metastatic or Stage IV cancer.21Social Security Administration. POMS DI 23020.045 – Terminal Illness (TERI) Cases
You don’t apply separately. Describing your diagnosis and its severity clearly in the application makes it easier for Social Security and DAS to spot a qualifying case.
If Your Claim Is Denied
Initial denials are common. You have 60 days from the date you receive each denial notice to file the next appeal, and Social Security assumes you received the notice five days after the date printed on it.22Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Appeals Process
The first appeal is reconsideration, where a different DAS examiner reviews your file plus any new evidence. File online, by phone, or with Form SSA-561.23Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration Submit any new medical records, test results, or doctor statements you now have.
If reconsideration is denied, you can request a hearing before an administrative law judge. The hearing is informal, held under oath, and recorded; the judge may hear from medical or vocational experts. Written evidence must be submitted at least five business days before the hearing.24Social Security Administration. SSA Hearing Process Wait times vary by location. Many claims that were denied earlier are approved at this stage.
After the hearing, further review is available through the Appeals Council and, if necessary, U.S. District Court, each with its own 60-day filing window.25eCFR. Appeals Council Review
Getting Help With Your Claim
You can hire a disability attorney or accredited representative at any point, though most people bring one on after an initial denial. Representatives typically work on contingency, and federal rules cap the fee at 25 percent of your past-due benefits or $9,200, whichever is less.26Social Security Administration. POMS GN 03920.006 – Increases to Fee Cap Limits for Fee Agreements Social Security withholds the fee from your back pay and sends it directly to the representative, so nothing comes out of pocket. Confirm anyone you hire is registered with Social Security to represent claimants, and make sure the fee agreement goes through the standard approval process.
