To apply for disability in Massachusetts, you file with the federal Social Security Administration online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at a local SSA field office in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, or another Massachusetts city. There are two federal programs, and you can apply for both at once. While your federal claim is pending, you can also apply for Massachusetts state programs that provide cash and health coverage during the wait. Plan on six to eight months for an initial decision.1Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take To Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits?

Social Security Disability Insurance is based on your work history. You generally need 40 work credits, 20 of them earned in the last 10 years before your disability began, with one credit for every $1,890 in 2026 wages up to four credits per year. Younger workers can qualify with fewer.2Social Security Administration. How Does Someone Become Eligible? Your monthly payment is calculated from your lifetime earnings.
Supplemental Security Income has no work history requirement but is means-tested. In 2026, your countable resources cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple, and the federal payment for an eligible individual is $994 per month.3Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet4Social Security Administration. Gather Your Documents Before You Start
The application uses two main forms: Form SSA-16, the benefits application, and Form SSA-3368, the Adult Disability Report that covers your medical conditions.8Social Security Administration. Application for Disability Insurance Benefits Form SSA-169Social Security Administration. SSA-3368-BK Disability Report – Adult SSA estimates the disability report alone takes about 80 minutes. Pulling everything together in advance saves you from stopping and starting.
For identity and eligibility, have your Social Security number, your birth certificate or other proof of birth, and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status if you were not born in the United States. If you have a current spouse or minor children, have their Social Security numbers and birth dates available, because they may qualify on your record.10Social Security Administration. The medical section is where applications succeed or fail. Collect the full names, addresses, and phone numbers of every doctor, hospital, clinic, and therapist who has treated your condition, along with specific visit and test dates. List your medications with dosages and the prescribing doctor, and gather any lab or imaging results you can access. If you can’t recall exact dates, give the closest you can. The form instructs you to answer every question, even if the answer is “none” or “don’t know.”9Social Security Administration. SSA-3368-BK Disability Report – Adult When describing your limitations, be concrete: how long you can stand, whether you can lift a gallon of milk, how often you lose focus in a conversation.
You will also fill out a Work History Report covering every job in the five years before your disability began, including the physical and mental demands of each role.11Social Security Administration. Work History Report – Form SSA-3369-BK SSA compares your current limitations against the demands of your past work to decide whether you could still do any of it.
Finally, have your W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns ready. Photocopies are fine for tax documents, but SSA needs to see originals of items like your birth certificate and will return them.10Social Security Administration. Apply Online for Disability Benefits

If you would rather talk to someone, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to apply by phone, or schedule an in-person appointment at a field office. Massachusetts has SSA offices in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and other cities, and a claims representative will walk through the forms with you. You can also mail a paper application to the field office serving your zip code, though this is the slowest option.
Apply for Massachusetts State Programs at the Same Time
Massachusetts runs its own programs that stack on top of federal benefits or fill the gap while you wait. File for them alongside your federal application; waiting until after an SSDI or SSI approval means losing months of help you were entitled to.
State Supplement Program
The State Supplement Program adds a monthly payment on top of federal SSI. For a disabled individual receiving SSI in 2026, the state supplement is $128.82 per month, for a combined total of $1,122.82.12Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled and Children
EAEDC is the bridge program while your federal claim is pending. Administered by DTA, it provides cash assistance to people with very low income who are not yet receiving federal benefits. The maximum monthly grant for a single person in a standard living arrangement is $441.10 as of early 2026, with the amount varying by housing situation. To qualify, your disability must have lasted or be expected to last at least 60 days, you must live in Massachusetts, and you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.14Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Emergency Aid to the Elderly Disabled and Children (EAEDC) The 60-day threshold is far shorter than SSA’s 12-month standard, which is the point.
If you appear eligible for SSI, DTA will require you to apply for SSI as well.15Mass.gov. Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled and Children Program Brochure EAEDC recipients also get MassHealth coverage, which keeps the medical treatment that supports your disability claim going.
MassHealth
SSI approval generally brings automatic MassHealth enrollment. SSDI recipients wait 24 months from their disability entitlement date for Medicare, so MassHealth can fill the gap. If you need a separate disability determination for MassHealth, you apply through its Disability Evaluation Services using an Adult Disability Supplement form; applicants who already have an SSA finding or a determination from the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind are recognized automatically.16Commonwealth of Massachusetts. What Happens After You File
Once your local SSA field office confirms your application is technically complete, the case goes to Massachusetts Disability Determination Services for the medical review. DDS is a state agency under MassAbility, fully funded by the federal government.17Social Security Administration. Disability Determination Process18Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MassAbility Disability Determination Services (DDS) DDS analysts review your medical records against SSA’s regulations and may contact your providers for additional information.
If DDS does not have enough medical evidence to decide, they will schedule a consultative examination with an independent doctor at the government’s expense. You pay nothing, but you must show up. Missing a consultative exam is one of the fastest ways to get denied.
An initial decision typically takes six to eight months from your application date.1Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take To Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits? You can check status anytime through “my Social Security.” The decision arrives as a written notice explaining the outcome and the reasoning; if approved, it includes your monthly benefit amount and when payments begin.
When Payments Start
Approval doesn’t mean immediate SSDI money. Federal law imposes a five-full-calendar-month waiting period from the date SSA determines your disability began, so your first SSDI payment arrives in the sixth month. ALS is the one exception, with no waiting period.19Social Security Administration. Disability Benefits – You’re Approved SSI has no waiting period, though processing time still applies.
Back pay offsets some of the delay. If your disability began well before you applied, SSA can pay retroactive SSDI benefits for up to 12 months before your application date, provided you were disabled during that time and met all other requirements.20Social Security Administration. Can I Get Social Security Disability Benefits for Any Months Before I Applied? This is a direct reason to file as early as possible: wait longer, lose back pay.
If You Are Denied
Roughly two-thirds of initial applications are denied. The appeal deadline is strict: 60 days from the date you receive the denial notice, and SSA assumes you received it five days after the date on the letter, giving you about 65 days from the letter date.21Social Security Administration. Your Right To Question the Decision Made on Your Claim Miss the window and the denial becomes final.
There are four appeal levels, each with its own 60-day deadline:22Social Security Administration. Appeal a Decision We Made
- Reconsideration, where a different SSA analyst reviews the entire claim fresh. You can submit new medical evidence, and you should. File Form SSA-561 and include Form SSA-827 to authorize release of your medical records.23Social Security Administration. Form SSA-561 – Request for Reconsideration
- A hearing before an Administrative Law Judge, where most successful appeals are won. You appear before the judge, often with a representative, and present your case directly.
- Appeals Council review, which may send the case back for a new hearing or issue its own decision.
- A civil action in U.S. District Court as a last resort.
Getting Help With Your Claim
You can appoint an attorney or non-attorney representative at any stage, including the initial application, by filing Form SSA-1696. SSA will not communicate with your representative until this form is on file.24Social Security Administration. Appointment of Representative Most disability representatives work on contingency, collecting a fee only if you win, typically 25% of your back pay up to a cap set by SSA.
Many people file the initial claim themselves and bring in help only after a denial, since the hearing stage is where representation makes the biggest difference. If you have a complicated medical history, multiple impairments, or difficulty with paperwork, getting help from the start can prevent the kind of incomplete submissions that lead to avoidable denials.
