You can apply for food stamps in Georgia four ways: online through the Georgia Gateway portal, by mail, by fax, or in person at your local Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) office. A single person generally qualifies with gross monthly income under $1,696, and a family of four with gross monthly income under $3,483, for the benefit year running through September 2026.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility From the day DFCS receives your application, a decision takes up to 30 days. Households in severe financial distress can receive benefits within seven.
Do You Qualify
Most households must pass two income tests. Gross income (before deductions) must stay at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty level, and net income (after deductions) at or below 100 percent. Georgia uses broad-based categorical eligibility, so there is no asset or resource limit — money in a savings account or a car in the driveway will not disqualify you.2Food and Nutrition Service. - Each additional person: add $596 gross / $459 net
Your “household” for SNAP purposes is everyone who lives with you and shares meals. Spouses and children under 22 living at home go on the same application whether or not they eat together.
Deductions That Can Pull You Under the Net Income Limit
Even if your gross income is close to the ceiling, several deductions can bring your countable income down. Every household gets a standard deduction. If you work, 20 percent of earned income is excluded. You can also deduct dependent care costs that let you work or attend training, legally owed child support you pay, and excess shelter costs — rent or mortgage plus utilities that exceed half your income after other deductions.
Households that include someone 60 or older or someone with a disability can deduct unreimbursed out-of-pocket medical expenses above $35 per month. That covers insurance premiums, prescription drugs, doctor copays, dental care, medical transportation, and equipment like hearing aids or eyeglasses. People often skip reporting these costs, and the deduction can meaningfully increase a monthly benefit.
What to Gather Before You Apply
Georgia’s application is Form 297 (Application for Benefits). You do not need every document in hand to file — DFCS tries to verify citizenship and income electronically first — but having paperwork ready shortens the process.3Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services. Application for Benefits
- Photo ID for the person applying (driver’s license or state ID)
- Social Security numbers for each household member requesting benefits (members who decline to provide one can be left off the request, and the rest can still apply)
- Proof of income: recent pay stubs, child support records, Social Security award letters, self-employment records
- Proof of expenses: rent or mortgage statements, utility bills, childcare receipts, medical bills if anyone in the household is 60 or older or disabled, and child support you pay
- Proof of Georgia residency: lease, utility bill, or similar
Fill in every section about household members and their income. Blank fields create delays because a caseworker has to come back and ask. Giving false information can lead to repayment, program disqualification, and in serious cases federal criminal prosecution.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 7 USC 2024 – Unauthorized Use, Transfer, Acquisition, Alteration, or Possession of Benefits
How to Submit the Application
- Online: create an account at Georgia Gateway and complete the application digitally. You can upload documents and check status through the portal.5Georgia Gateway. Welcome to Georgia Gateway
- In person: bring the completed Form 297 to your local county DFCS office.
- Mail: send the completed form to your county DFCS office.
- Fax: fax the completed form to your county office’s fax number.
The date DFCS receives your application starts the 30-day clock. If you mail or fax it, keep your confirmation or fax receipt. That timestamp matters if there is any dispute later about when you applied.
Seven-Day Processing If You’re in Crisis
Federal rules require DFCS to issue benefits within seven days if your household meets any of these conditions:6eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2 – Office Operations and Application Processing
- Monthly gross income under $150 and liquid resources (cash, checking, savings) under $100
- Migrant or seasonal farmworker who is destitute, with liquid resources under $100
- Combined monthly gross income and liquid resources less than monthly rent or mortgage plus utilities
The caseworker screens for expedited eligibility when your application arrives, which is one more reason to fill in every income and housing field. A blank rent line can keep the system from flagging you for fast-track processing.
What Happens After You Apply
An eligibility worker will schedule an interview once your application is in. Federal regulations allow it to be done by phone, and Georgia generally defaults to a phone interview.7Georgia Department of Human Services. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program The person interviewed has to know the household’s situation, usually the head of household or an authorized representative. In-person or home visit interviews can be arranged for elderly or disabled applicants who have trouble with a phone call.8eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2 – Office Operations and Application Processing
Expect the worker to ask follow-up questions about income sources, who lives in the home, and your expenses, and to request additional documentation if anything is unclear. Missing the scheduled interview can get your application denied, so watch your mail and voicemail after you submit.
DFCS must decide your case and provide access to benefits within 30 days of your application date, or seven days for expedited cases.9Georgia Division of Family and Children Services. 3105 Application Processing You will get a written notice telling you whether you were approved or denied, with the benefit amount if approved.
Work Requirements If You’re an Adult Without Dependents
Georgia enforces time-limited work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents, often called ABAWDs. As of November 2025, that category covers anyone from 18 through 65 who is physically and mentally able to work and is not responsible for the care of a child under 14 in the household.10Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services. SNAP Work Requirement Change for ABAWDs Effective Nov. 1 The age range expanded from the previous 18–54 after federal legislation took effect in July 2025.
If you fall into this category, you can receive SNAP for only three months in any three-year period unless you meet one of these:11Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services. Able-Bodied Adults without Dependents
- Work (including self-employment) at least 20 hours per week or 80 hours per month
- Participate in the SNAP Employment and Training program or another approved workforce program for the same hours
- Combine work and an approved training program for a total of at least 80 hours per month
- Participate in a workfare program for the hours assigned each month
Exemptions apply to people who are pregnant, medically certified as unfit for employment, or already exempt for other reasons. If you lose a job, report it to DFCS right away; a temporary exemption may be available rather than an automatic cutoff.
Your Benefit Amount and EBT Card
Approved households receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card by mail that works like a debit card at authorized grocery stores and some online retailers. Your monthly amount depends on household size, income, and deductions. Maximum monthly allotments for October 2025 through September 2026:1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility
- 1 person: $298
- 2 people: $546
- 3 people: $785
- 4 people: $994
- 5 people: $1,183
- 6 people: $1,421
- 7 people: $1,571
- 8 people: $1,789
- Each additional person: add $218
Most households receive less than the maximum because the formula subtracts 30 percent of your net income from the maximum allotment. One- and two-person households that qualify through categorical eligibility receive at least $24 per month even if the formula would produce a lower figure.
Benefits land on your EBT account on a staggered schedule between the 5th and 23rd of each month, based on the last two digits of your case number. You can check your balance and deposit date through Georgia Gateway or by calling the number on the back of your card.
If You’re Denied
A denial is not the final word. You have 30 days from the date on the denial notice to request a fair hearing, reviewed by the Office of State Administrative Hearings. You can make the request orally or in writing; if you make it orally, follow up in writing within 15 days.12Georgia Division of Family and Children Services. Fair Hearing
At the hearing you can present evidence, bring witnesses, and explain why the decision was wrong. Common grounds for reversal include caseworker errors in calculating income, documentation you did not have the first time, and deductions you were entitled to that were not applied. Bring your own records — pay stubs, rent receipts, utility bills, medical bills — and walk the hearing officer through the math. Many denials come from incomplete applications rather than real ineligibility, and the hearing is your chance to fill those gaps.
