To apply for Massachusetts unemployment, file a claim with the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) online at unemployment.mass.gov, by phone at (877) 626-6800 Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or in person by appointment at the Boston Re-Employment Center. The online application is the fastest route and gives you an immediate filing confirmation. Have your Social Security number, employer history for the past year, the reason you lost your job, any severance amounts, and your bank’s routing and account numbers in front of you before you start.1Mass.gov. Before You Apply: Are You Eligible
Two basic questions decide whether DUA will consider your claim. First, did you lose your job through no fault of your own? Layoffs, position eliminations, and hours cut by the employer all qualify. If you were fired for deliberate misconduct or quit without good cause, DUA will likely deny the claim, though exceptions exist and DUA still recommends applying because waiting reduces your total possible benefits.2Mass.gov. Unemployment Insurance Eligibility
Second, did you earn enough? You need at least $6,300 in wages over the past 12 months. You must also be able to work, available for work, and actively looking for a job every week you collect benefits.2Mass.gov. Unemployment Insurance Eligibility
If you qualify, your weekly benefit will be roughly 50 percent of your average weekly wage during the lookback period, capped at $1,105 per week. Benefits can run up to 30 weeks within a 52-week claim year.3Mass.gov. How Unemployment Insurance Benefits Are Determined
What to Have Ready
A missing field or incomplete answer can stall your claim or trigger a request for more documentation. Gather these before you log in or dial:
- Your Social Security number and date of birth.
- Names, phone numbers, and mailing addresses for every employer you worked for during the past 15 months. The Federal Employer Identification Number from your pay stubs or W-2s speeds up wage verification.
- The specific reason you are no longer working — laid off, hours reduced, discharged, or quit — along with dates.
- The exact amount and date range of any severance, vacation payout, or dismissal pay. Severance paid without conditions disqualifies you for the period it covers. Six weeks of severance means benefits do not start until those six weeks run out.4Mass Legal Services. Persons Receiving Severance Pay or Other Lump-Sum Payments Upon Separation From Employment
- Your bank’s routing number and your account number for direct deposit. DUA takes about nine business days to verify this information, so entering it during the application avoids payment delays.5Mass.gov. Unemployment Insurance Payment Options
- If you are not a U.S. citizen, your Alien Registration number (A-Number) or Employment Authorization Document.6Mass.gov. Apply for Unemployment Benefits as a Non-Citizen
- Dependent information if you provide primary support. You may qualify for an additional $25 per week per dependent. Eligible dependents include children under 18, children under 24 who are full-time students, and adults who cannot work due to a disability. Spouses do not count.3Mass.gov. Three Ways to File
Online at unemployment.mass.gov
This is the primary and fastest method. Create an account on the Unemployment Services site (a previous UI Online login will not work on the newer system) and work through screens that collect your personal information, employment history, and separation reason.7Mass.gov. Log In to Unemployment Services for Workers At the end you digitally certify that your answers are accurate; false statements carry fines and possible imprisonment under Massachusetts law. Save or print the confirmation page. Your filing date sets the start of your benefit year.
By Phone
Call the TeleClaim Center at (877) 626-6800, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A representative walks you through the same questions as the online form. Help is available in multiple languages. Have your documentation in hand to avoid callbacks.1Mass.gov. Apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits
In Person
The DUA’s Boston Re-Employment Center at 2 Avenue de Lafayette, Boston, MA 02111, accepts in-person applications by appointment only. Book through the DUA appointment page before you go. It is the only location that handles walk-through applications, and DUA does not accept paper applications by mail.8Massachusetts Legal Help. How to Apply for Unemployment Insurance in Massachusetts
Filling Out the Application
Reason for Separation
This is where claims most often run into trouble. You pick a category — layoff, reduction in hours, discharge, or voluntary quit — and give a short account of what happened. Your employer provides their own version, and a DUA adjudicator compares the two.9Mass Legal Services. UI Part III – Separation From Work When the accounts conflict, DUA opens a fact-finding review that often includes a phone interview with both sides.10Mass.gov. Respond to Requests About Unemployment Claims as an Employer Be specific, be honest, and keep your dates straight. Vague or shifting answers almost guarantee extra scrutiny.
Availability and Work Search
The application asks whether you are available for full-time work. Once benefits start, you must complete at least three job search activities each week. Applying for jobs, attending interviews, going to hiring events, and registering with a staffing agency all count. DUA verifies the activities, so keep a log with dates, employer names, and what you did.11Mass.gov. File Your Weekly Unemployment Claim
Direct Deposit and Tax Withholding
Enter your routing and account numbers during the application. Once verified, payments arrive two to three business days after each weekly claim.5Mass.gov. Unemployment Insurance Payment Options You can also elect tax withholding during the application: 10 percent for federal and 5 percent for Massachusetts state income tax. Unemployment benefits are taxable, and DUA will send you a Form 1099-G in January showing the total paid.12Mass.gov. Tax Responsibilities While Collecting Unemployment Benefits If you skip withholding, set aside roughly 15 percent of each payment.
Verifying Your Identity
Within 72 hours of filing, DUA may send a notice by mail or email directing you to verify your identity. Follow the method the notice specifies — the options are not interchangeable:13Mass.gov. Verify Your Identity for Unemployment Benefits
- An online quiz in your Unemployment Services account, which you can also complete by calling (877) 626-6800.
- A visit to a participating USPS location with your photo ID and the verification notice. The notice carries a barcode the postal worker scans.
- Mailing copies of ID documents to DUA’s Program Integrity office at 100 Cambridge St, 4th Floor, Suite 400, Boston, MA 02114. This path is rare and generally tied to an appeal. Send copies, never originals.
Miss the deadline and DUA can deny your benefits. Respond the day the notice arrives.
What Happens After You Submit
DUA mails you a Notice of Monetary Determination showing your estimated weekly benefit based on your reported wages and your employer’s records. Read it carefully. If wages are missing or an employer is not listed, fill out the wage correction sheet attached to the notice and submit pay stubs, tax forms, or bank records that prove the earnings.14Mass Legal Services. How Are UI Benefits Calculated
The first week you file a weekly claim is an unpaid waiting week. You will not be paid for that week, but you must file for it anyway because the clock does not start until you do. Your first payment covers the second week you certify.15Mass.gov. FAQs About Unemployment Insurance for Workers
DUA also contacts your most recent employer for their version of the separation. If the employer protests the claim, DUA runs a fact-finding review, usually a phone call with both of you. Treat it like a hearing: have dates, names, and documentation ready.16Mass.gov. Employer Responsibilities During the Unemployment Process
Certifying Each Week to Get Paid
Filing the initial claim only opens your case. To actually receive money, log in to your Unemployment Services dashboard every week and request benefits. DUA calls this weekly certification. You confirm you are still unemployed or underemployed, able to work, available, and job searching, and you report any part-time or temporary earnings for that week.11Mass.gov. File Your Weekly Unemployment Claim
If you cannot certify online, use the TeleCert line at (617) 626-6338, available daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.7Mass.gov. Log In to Unemployment Services for Workers Skip a week and you forfeit that week’s payment. If a denial is later reversed on appeal, retroactive benefits only cover weeks you actually certified. Keep certifying even while an appeal is pending.
If You’re Denied
You have 10 calendar days from the mailing date on the determination letter to file an appeal. That window counts from the date printed on the letter, not the day it reaches your mailbox, so open DUA mail the day it arrives.17Mass.gov. Appeal an Unemployment Decision as a Claimant Appeals go to a hearing examiner at the Division of Hearings, usually by phone, where you and the employer can present evidence and witnesses. You are not required to have an attorney, but if the dispute involves alleged misconduct, legal help improves your odds. Several Massachusetts legal aid organizations handle unemployment appeals at no cost.
A Note on Overpayments
If DUA later determines you were paid benefits you were not entitled to — whether from a reporting error, a reversed eligibility decision, or fraud — you have to pay the money back, with interest starting 30 days after the overpayment notice. A separate penalty can apply if the overpayment resulted from your own error or misrepresentation.18Mass.gov. Repay Unemployment Benefit Debt If the overpayment was not your fault and repayment would be unfair given your circumstances, you can request a waiver. Contact DUA promptly after any overpayment notice, either to arrange a payment plan or to ask for the waiver before collection begins.
