How to Apply for Pregnancy Disability in California

To apply for pregnancy disability in California, file a claim with the Employment Development Department (EDD) between 9 and 49 days after your disability begins, using either SDI Online or the paper form DE 2501. Your application has two parts: Part A, which you complete, and Part B, the medical certification your doctor completes. Once the EDD has both, most claims are decided within 14 days, and approved benefits replace 70 to 90 percent of your wages up to $1,765 per week in 2026.1Employment Development Department. Who Qualifies

Eligibility has two sides: earnings and medical.

On the earnings side, you must have had at least $300 in wages with SDI deductions withheld during your base period, which is a 12-month window ending about five months before your disability begins.2Employment Development Department. On the medical side, your doctor must certify that you cannot perform your regular work, and you must be out for at least eight days. The first seven days are an unpaid waiting period; benefits start on day eight. If you file a second claim for the same or related condition within 60 days, you skip the waiting period the second time.4California Legislative Information. In a typical pregnancy, disability covers roughly four weeks before your due date and six weeks after a vaginal birth or eight weeks after a cesarean.5California Civil Rights Department. Your actual coverage tracks whatever your doctor certifies.

Check for a Voluntary Plan First

Before you touch the EDD website, check with your HR department. Some California employers run a Voluntary Plan (VP) instead of using state SDI, and if yours does, you file through your employer, not the state.6Employment Development Department. Voluntary Plan A VP has to match or beat state benefits. Your paystub will show whether your deductions go to SDI or a voluntary plan.

What to Gather Before You Start

Missing information is the most common reason claims stall, and the 49-day filing deadline keeps running while you look things up. Pull everything together first:

  • Your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and California driver license or state ID number.
  • Your current mailing address.
  • Your most recent employer’s business name (as it appears on your W-2 or paystub), full mailing address, and phone number.
  • Any wages you have received or expect to receive after your disability begins, including sick leave, PTO, or vacation pay.
  • Details of any pending workers’ compensation claim.

Lining Up the Medical Certification

Part B of the claim is your doctor’s certificate. Your claim will not be processed until the EDD has both Part A and Part B.8Employment Development Department. Step 3 – Have a Medical Certification Completed If you file online, submitting Part A generates a receipt number; give that number to your doctor’s office so they can find your claim in SDI Online and file Part B electronically. On paper, your doctor fills out Part B on the same DE 2501 form.9Employment Development Department. Claim for Disability Insurance Benefits DE 2501

The medical certification must be submitted within 49 days of your disability start date. Some medical offices charge a fee for completing disability paperwork, so ask about that when you schedule the appointment.

When to File

Timing matters. Wait at least nine days after your disability begins before you submit, but file no later than 49 days after it starts. Miss the 49-day deadline and you can lose benefits or have the claim disqualified entirely.10Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Claim Process

Filing Online Through SDI Online

Online is faster and lets you track the claim’s status.

  1. Go to edd.ca.gov and register for a myEDD account. You’ll get a confirmation email with a link that expires in 48 hours.
  2. Log in to myEDD and select SDI Online. You’ll verify your identity through ID.me before you can finish setting up the account.
  3. Choose “New Claim,” then “Disability Insurance,” and work through each section. Pick your payment method (direct deposit, prepaid debit card, or check) when prompted.
  4. Save the receipt number that appears after you submit Part A, and pass it to your doctor’s office so they can file Part B online.

The ID.me step is where some applicants get stuck. It usually means uploading a photo of your ID and taking a selfie for facial recognition. If the automated check fails, you may have to do a short video call with an ID.me agent, which can add a day or two.7Employment Development Department. Filing by Mail

If you’d rather use paper, download the DE 2501 from edd.ca.gov or pick one up at your doctor’s office. Complete and sign Part A, have your doctor complete Part B, and mail the whole form to the Disability Insurance office address printed on it. Paper takes longer to process than online, so file early in the 49-day window to leave yourself room.9Employment Development Department. Claim for Disability Insurance Benefits DE 2501

What Happens After You Submit

Once the EDD has both parts of your application, an examiner reviews eligibility, checks the medical certification, and calculates your weekly amount. That usually takes up to 14 days.10Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Claim Process If the examiner needs more information, the clock effectively resets, so respond to any request right away.

Approval brings a notice with your weekly benefit amount and eligibility period. Payments arrive by the method you chose at filing: direct deposit, a Money Network prepaid debit card, or a paper check.11Employment Development Department. Benefit Payment Options FAQs Direct deposit is the fastest option and is only available if you filed online.

While you’re receiving benefits, the EDD may ask you to periodically confirm that your disability continues, either by mail or through your SDI Online inbox. A missed certification pauses payments even if nothing about your condition has changed. Note that SDI pregnancy benefits are not taxable at the federal or California state level.12Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance – Benefits and Payments FAQs

If Your Claim Is Denied

You have 30 days from the date on the denial notice to appeal. Complete the Appeal Form (DE 1000A) that comes with the notice, or write a letter explaining why you believe you’re eligible, and attach any documents the EDD didn’t have. Mail it to the return address on the notice.13Employment Development Department. State Disability Insurance Appeals

The EDD re-evaluates the claim first. If they reverse the denial, payments begin. If they uphold it, the appeal moves to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, where an Administrative Law Judge holds a hearing and decides based on the facts both sides present. Late appeals are allowed, but you’ll need to show good cause for the delay.13Employment Development Department. State Disability Insurance Appeals

What Applying Doesn’t Cover

Two boundaries are worth knowing before you file, because assuming otherwise causes problems later.

First, SDI is a wage-replacement check, not job protection. The right to return to your job after leave comes from separate laws: California’s Pregnancy Disability Leave under the Fair Employment and Housing Act, the California Family Rights Act, and the federal Family and Medical Leave Act.14California Legislative Information. California Government Code 1294515U.S. Department of Labor. Fact Sheet #28 – The Family and Medical Leave Act You apply to the EDD for money and to your employer (with proper notice) for protected time off. They are separate processes.

Second, SDI stops when your medical disability ends. If you want paid time to bond with your baby afterward, that’s a separate claim for Paid Family Leave. After your final SDI payment, the EDD sends you a Claim for Paid Family Leave Benefits – New Mother form (DE 2501FP), either to your SDI Online inbox or by mail depending on how you filed originally. PFL provides up to eight weeks of bonding benefits at the same wage-replacement rate as SDI.16Employment Development Department. Transitioning from Disability Insurance to Paid Family Leave
