To apply for SSI in Colorado, contact the Social Security Administration online, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at a local SSA field office, and submit proof of your age, citizenship, income, resources, and medical condition. SSI pays up to $994 per month for an individual or $1,491 for a couple in 2026, and approval in Colorado automatically enrolls you in Medicaid through Health First Colorado.{1Social Security Administration. Who Can Get SSI in Colorado
SSI is a federal program for people with very limited income and resources who are at least 65, blind, or disabled.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC Chapter 7, Subchapter XVI – Supplemental Security Income for Aged, Blind, and Disabled You don’t need a work history. That is the main thing that separates SSI from Social Security Disability Insurance.
For adults, “disabled” means a physical or mental condition that prevents you from earning above what the SSA calls substantial gainful activity. In 2026, that threshold is $1,690 a month for non-blind applicants and $2,830 a month if you’re blind.3SSA. What’s New in 2026 – The Red Book Your condition must have lasted or be expected to last at least 12 continuous months, or be expected to result in death.4Social Security Administration. Disability Benefits – How Does Someone Become Eligible A diagnosis alone is not enough; the SSA evaluates whether you can do your previous work or adjust to other work given your limitations.
Children under 18 qualify under a different standard: a physical or mental condition causing marked and severe functional limitations, with the same 12-month duration rule. When a child receiving SSI turns 18, the SSA re-evaluates them under the adult standard.
You also have to be a U.S. citizen or fall into one of the eligible non-citizen categories, such as lawful permanent resident, and you have to live in Colorado (or another of the 50 states, D.C., or the Northern Mariana Islands).5eCFR. 20 CFR Part 416 Subpart B – Eligibility6Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
The 2026 Income and Resource Limits
SSI has two separate financial tests. Fail either one and you’re ineligible, no matter how serious your medical condition.
Resources
Your countable resources cannot exceed $2,000 as an individual or $3,000 as a couple.7Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on Resources Those numbers have been frozen since 1989 and did not change for 2026.8Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Countable resources include cash, bank balances, stocks, and real estate other than your primary home. The SSA does not count your home, one vehicle, household goods, or personal effects.
Two exclusions matter if you’re close to the limit. Up to $1,500 per person set aside in a clearly designated account for burial expenses doesn’t count, and burial plots and prepaid burial arrangements are excluded separately with no dollar cap.9Code of Federal Regulations. 20 CFR 416.1231 – Burial Spaces and Certain Funds Set Aside for Burial Expenses And if your disability began before age 46 (raised from age 26 starting January 1, 2026), the first $100,000 in an ABLE savings account is excluded. Colorado runs its own ABLE program through the state treasurer’s office.10Social Security Administration. Payee and ABLE Accounts
Income
SSI doesn’t cut off the moment you earn a dollar. It reduces your monthly payment based on countable income, after several exclusions:
- The first $20 per month of most income, earned or unearned, is not counted.11Code of Federal Regulations. 20 CFR 416.1112 – Earned Income We Do Not Count
- The first $65 per month of wages is not counted, and only half of your remaining earnings count against your benefit after that.
- Students under 22 attending school regularly can exclude up to $2,410 per month in earned income in 2026, capped at $9,730 for the year.12Social Security Administration. Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI
Unearned income such as pensions, unemployment, or Social Security reduces your SSI dollar for dollar after that initial $20. A $200 monthly pension cuts your SSI by $180. And if you live in someone else’s household and get free food and shelter, the SSA treats that as “in-kind support and maintenance” and reduces your benefit by about one-third of the federal benefit rate, roughly $331 a month in 2026.13eCFR. 20 CFR 416.1131 – The One-Third Reduction Rule Contributing something toward food or shelter can keep that reduction from applying.
What to Gather Before You Apply
Pulling everything together before you contact the SSA will save weeks. The agency needs enough to verify who you are, check your finances, and evaluate your medical condition.
For identity and household: a birth certificate or other proof of age, Social Security numbers for everyone in your household, and proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
For finances: bank statements for all checking and savings accounts, current pay stubs, records of any other income (unemployment, workers’ comp, pensions, support from family), rent receipts or mortgage statements, and utility bills.
For medical: names, addresses, and phone numbers for every doctor, therapist, hospital, and clinic that has treated your condition; treatment dates and medical record numbers if you have them; a list of medications with dosages; and any lab results, imaging reports, or specialist evaluations you can get your hands on.
You don’t need to collect your own medical records before applying. The SSA and Colorado Disability Determination Services will request them directly. Copies speed things up, but providers sometimes charge per-page fees that add up fast.
Three Ways to File Your Application
The formal application is built around SSA Form 8000 (or the abbreviated Form 8001), and there are three ways to get it on file.14Social Security Administration. Social Security Forms
Online
The SSA offers an online SSI application, but eligibility to use it is narrow. You can generally file online if you are 18 to 64, applying for SSI and disability benefits at the same time, a U.S. citizen, have never been married, and have never applied for SSI before.15Social Security Administration. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Application Process If that’s you and you already have a my Social Security account, online is the fastest route.
By Phone
Most people won’t qualify for the online option. Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to schedule a phone appointment. An SSA representative walks you through the application and tells you what documents to submit. Phone lines are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In Person at a Colorado Field Office
Colorado has field offices in Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Pueblo, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, and other cities. In-person visits work best if your documentation is complex, you want help understanding the forms, or you need originals verified on the spot. Use the SSA office locator at ssa.gov to find the nearest one.
Lock In a Protective Filing Date Before You’re Ready
This is the step most applicants miss, and it can be worth a month or more of back-dated benefits. A “protective filing date” locks in your application date the moment you contact the SSA with intent to apply, even if the paperwork isn’t done. For SSI, you then have 60 days to submit the formal application, and benefits are calculated from that earlier contact date.16Social Security Administration (SSA) – Program Operations Manual System (POMS). Protective Filing A phone call, a letter, an email, or starting the online application and receiving a confirmation number can establish it. If you know you’ll apply soon but aren’t quite ready, make the contact now.
What Happens After You File
The SSA handles the financial side of your case and sends your medical file to Colorado’s Disability Determination Services for a separate medical evaluation.17Colorado Department of Human Services. Disability Determination Services DDS examiners request records from every provider you listed, review them against your work history, and compare the whole picture to SSA criteria. If what they get isn’t enough, they’ll schedule a consultative examination at no cost to you. Then the file goes back to the SSA for a final eligibility determination, and you get a decision letter in the mail.
Timing varies. The SSA’s disability starter kit says three to five months; its FAQ page says six to eight.18Social Security Administration. Adult Disability Starter Kit19Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits Recent processing has trended toward the longer end. The biggest variable is how quickly DDS can get your medical records; scattered or slow-responding providers mean delays.
If your condition is on the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances list — about 280 conditions, mostly aggressive cancers, severe brain disorders, and certain rare diseases — your claim is flagged automatically for accelerated processing, and decisions can come in weeks rather than months.20Social Security Administration. Compassionate Allowances You don’t need to request it.
Colorado State Supplements and Automatic Medicaid
Colorado adds its own financial support on top of federal SSI through programs run by the Colorado Department of Human Services. The two main ones are Aid to the Needy Disabled-Colorado Supplement, for disabled SSI recipients, and the Old Age Pension, for residents 60 and older who meet financial criteria.21Colorado Department of Human Services. Adult Financial Programs You apply through the Colorado PEAK website or your local county human services office.
Colorado is also a “1634 state,” which means SSI approval automatically enrolls you in Medicaid (Health First Colorado). The SSA sends your eligibility data directly to the state Medicaid office, so no separate Medicaid application is usually needed.22Social Security Administration. State Medicaid Eligibility and Enrollment Policies and Rates of Medicaid Participation Among Disabled Supplemental Security Income Recipients Coverage typically starts the same month your SSI benefits begin, which matters if you have expensive prescriptions or ongoing treatment.
If Your Application Is Denied
Most first-time SSI applicants are denied. That is not the end. The SSA has a four-level appeals process, and each level is a fresh look at the evidence.23Social Security Administration. The Appeals Process
- Reconsideration. A different SSA reviewer examines your entire file, including any new evidence.
- Administrative law judge hearing. You appear in person or by video before a judge with no prior involvement in your case. Most successful appeals are won here, because the judge can ask you directly about your limitations.
- Appeals Council review. The council reviews the judge’s decision for legal errors.
- Federal court. You file a civil action in U.S. District Court challenging the Appeals Council’s decision.
At every level you have 60 days from the date you receive the denial notice to file. The SSA assumes you got it five days after mailing, so you effectively have 65 days from the mailing date.24Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Appeals Process Miss the deadline and you may be forced to start the application over, losing months or years of potential back benefits. If something genuinely prevented you from filing on time, you can ask the SSA to accept a late appeal for “good cause,” but the bar is real and procrastination doesn’t qualify.25Social Security Administration – Program Operations Manual System (POMS). Good Cause for Extending Time Limit Treat the 60 days as a hard deadline.
After Approval: What You Must Report
Approval is not the end of the paperwork. The SSA recalculates your benefit based on your current circumstances and relies on you to report changes. Fail to report, and you’ll owe money back, plus penalties.
Report the following within 10 days after the end of the month in which they happen:26Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Reporting Responsibilities
- Any change in earned or unearned income (yours, your spouse’s, or a parent’s if you’re a child)
- Changes in living arrangements, including moves or someone moving in or out
- Changes in resources, such as an inheritance or settlement
- Marriage, divorce, or separation
- Admission to or discharge from a hospital, nursing home, or jail
- Help with living expenses from friends or relatives
- Improvement in your medical condition
Penalties escalate: $25 off your SSI for a first late or missed report, $50 for a second, and $100 for each one after that.27Social Security Administration. Social Security Handbook 2126 – Recipient Reporting Requirements If the SSA finds you knowingly withheld information or made a misleading statement, payments can be suspended entirely for six months on the first offense, 12 months on the second, and 24 months after that.28Social Security Administration (SSA) – Program Operations Manual System (POMS). Administrative Sanctions – Policy Those are full cutoffs for the sanction period, not reductions. When in doubt, report the change.
