To apply for State Disability Insurance in California, file a claim with the Employment Development Department through the SDI Online portal or by mailing the paper Claim for Disability Insurance Benefits form (DE 2501), and have your doctor submit the medical certification. You must file no earlier than nine days after your disability begins and no later than 49 days after it begins, or the EDD can deny your claim.1Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Claim Process SDI replaces 70 to 90 percent of your recent wages while a non-work-related illness, injury, pregnancy, surgery, or substance abuse recovery program keeps you from working.2Employment Development Department. Confirm SDI Is the Right Program for You
Before you file, make sure your situation actually fits SDI. The program covers non-work-related conditions. If you were hurt on the job, you fall under workers’ compensation instead, and you cannot collect both for the same condition.2Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Benefits
Check a recent pay stub for a line labeled “CASDI.” That confirms your employer has been withholding SDI contributions and your wages are covered. The withholding rate for 2026 is 1.3 percent of all wages with no cap.3Employment Development Department. Contribution Rates, Withholding Schedules, and Meals and Lodging Values
Also check whether your employer uses a Voluntary Plan rather than the state plan. Some employers provide their own EDD-approved disability coverage, and if yours does, you file the claim with your employer, not with the EDD.4Employment Development Department. Voluntary Plan Your HR department or pay stub will tell you. The rest of this guide assumes you are covered under the standard state plan.
To qualify for benefits under the state plan, you must be unable to do your regular work for at least eight days and have earned at least $300 in wages during your base period, the 12-month window from which SDI deductions were withheld.2Employment Development Department. Gather Your Information First
Pull these together before you start the application so you aren’t stopping mid-form to hunt for a document:
- Your full legal name as it appears on your California driver license or state ID, your date of birth, and your Social Security number.
- Your California driver license or ID number. Online filing requires one; without it, you have to file by mail.
- Your most recent employer’s business name, mailing address, and phone number, usually printed on your W-2 or pay stub.
- The exact date you last performed your regular job duties.
- Any other income you have received or expect to receive, including sick leave, paid time off, vacation pay, or workers’ compensation payments.
Report other income accurately. If the EDD finds you gave false information or left out relevant details, the penalty is 30 percent on top of any overpayment plus disqualification from future benefits for up to 23 weeks.6Employment Development Department. Benefit Overpayments FAQs
Filing Online Through SDI Online
Online filing is the fastest route. You will move through three stages before your claim is actually submitted:7Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim in SDI Online
- Create a myEDD account at the myEDD portal. You will get a confirmation email with a link that expires in 48 hours, so check your spam folder if it does not appear.
- Register for SDI Online from inside myEDD. You will verify your identity through ID.me as part of registration.
- File the claim. Enter your personal details, employment information, disability dates, and other income. When you submit Part A, the Claimant’s Statement, the system gives you a receipt number. Save it. Your doctor needs it to file the medical certification.
Online filing is not available if you lack a valid California driver license or state ID, lack a Social Security number, or hit a name-length limit in the form. File by mail in any of those cases.7Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim in SDI Online
Filing by Mail With Form DE 2501
The paper version is the Claim for Disability Insurance Benefits, Form DE 2501. Order it through the EDD website or pick one up at many doctors’ offices and hospitals.8Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim by Mail The form has two parts. You complete Part A, the Claimant’s Statement, with your personal, employment, and disability information. Your doctor completes Part B, the Physician/Practitioner’s Certificate. Both parts must reach the EDD for the claim to count as complete.
Mail the finished form in the pre-addressed envelope that comes in the packet, and keep a copy of everything you send. Expect slower processing than online filing because the paper has to travel and be scanned in.
Get the Medical Certification Submitted
Your claim is not complete until a licensed health professional, such as a physician, osteopath, or chiropractor, submits the medical certification. If you filed online, give your doctor the receipt number from Part A so they can complete their portion through SDI Online. If you filed by mail, your doctor fills out Part B of the DE 2501 and either returns it to you to mail or sends it to the EDD directly.8Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim by Mail
Your doctor must provide a diagnosis, explain how the condition limits your ability to work, and give an estimated date you can return to the job. That return-to-work date tells the EDD how long to pay benefits before a re-evaluation.
An out-of-state doctor can certify your claim. If they want to submit through SDI Online, they need to call 1-855-342-3645 before completing their registration. Otherwise they can simply complete the paper form and mail it in.9Employment Development Department. Certify or Extend Claims – Basics for Physicians/Practitioners
What Happens After You File
Every SDI claim starts with a mandatory seven-day, non-payable waiting period that runs from the first day your disability keeps you from working. No benefits are paid for those seven days. Payments begin on the eighth day.10Cornell Law School. California Code of Regulations Title 22, 2627(b)-1 – Waiting Period
Once the EDD has both your claimant’s statement and the medical certification, most claims process within about two weeks.11Employment Development Department. Step 4 – Review Benefit Documents A missing medical certification or missing details on your form will stretch that out, which is why coordinating with your doctor matters.
You will receive a Notice of Computation (Form DE 429D) showing your weekly benefit amount and the maximum total for your claim, calculated from your base period wages.12Employment Development Department. Explanation of Notice of Computation (DE 429DI) Read it carefully. If any wages, dates, or employer details are wrong, contact the EDD within 30 days of the mailing date to request a correction. Reported wage errors change your benefit amount in either direction.11Employment Development Department. Step 4 – Review Benefit Documents The maximum weekly benefit for claims beginning in 2026 is $1,765, and a single disability claim can last up to 52 weeks.5Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Benefit Payment Amounts
You pick how payments reach you from three options:13Employment Development Department. Your Benefit Payment Options
- Direct deposit. Payments land in your bank account within about three days. No fees.
- A prepaid debit card mailed by the EDD. The first payment takes 7 to 10 days; later payments arrive within about two days. No bank account required.
- Paper checks by mail, in 7 to 10 days. No bank account required.
SDI Pays You, It Does Not Protect Your Job
Receiving SDI does not stop your employer from terminating you. SDI is wage replacement only. Job protection comes from separate laws such as the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), and you have to qualify for those on their own terms.2Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Benefits If keeping your position matters, talk to your employer’s HR department about FMLA or CFRA leave. SDI can replace wages during a protected leave, but the leave and the money come from different programs.
If You Are Self-Employed, You Need to Have Opted In Already
SDI is funded by payroll deductions from employees. Self-employed workers, independent contractors, and sole proprietors are not automatically covered. You can opt in through Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC), but only before you need it.14Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC)
To qualify for DIEC, you must own a business, be self-employed, or work as an independent contractor; earn a net profit of at least $4,600 per year; be performing your normal duties full-time when you apply; receive most of your income from the trade, business, or contract work; operate a non-seasonal business; and commit to staying in the program for at least two full calendar years.
You apply by completing Form DE 1378DI and mailing it to the EDD. After approval you must wait at least six months before you can file a disability claim, and you must have paid contributions for at least four of the prior 12 months before applying for benefits.14Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) You cannot enroll after a disability has already started.
If Your Claim Is Denied
A denial comes on a Notice of Determination with an appeal form and instructions. You have 30 calendar days from the mailing date on that notice to file an appeal, either by submitting Form DE 1000M or by writing a letter that explains why you disagree.15California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. Appeal Process The EDD reviews the appeal internally first. If it does not reverse the decision, your case goes to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board’s local Office of Appeals, which mails you a notice with the hearing date, time, and location. You can present medical evidence, testimony, and supporting documentation at the hearing.16Employment Development Department. State Disability Insurance Appeals
