To apply for unemployment benefits in Missouri, file a claim through the state’s UInteract portal at uinteract.labor.mo.gov or call a Regional Claims Center. You need at least $2,250 in wages during your base period and must have lost your job through no fault of your own. Weekly benefits run from $35 to $320 depending on your prior earnings, and Missouri generally pays up to 20 weeks within a benefit year.
What to Gather Before You File
Have these in front of you before you start the application:1Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. How to File for Unemployment

- A valid Missouri driver’s license or state ID.
- Your current mailing address and phone number.
- Employment history for the last 18 months, including every employer’s legal name, full mailing address, and your exact start and end dates.
- The reason you left each job (layoff, resignation, termination, and so on).
- Your bank’s nine-digit routing number and your account number if you want direct deposit.
If you served in the military within the last 18 months, bring the Member 4 copy of your DD-214. Who Qualifies
Missouri measures eligibility against your base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. From an employer that pays into Missouri’s unemployment insurance system, you must have earned:
- At least $2,250 in total base period wages.
- At least $1,500 in one calendar quarter.
- At least $750 combined across the remaining quarters.
If your wages don’t fit the standard window, Missouri offers an alternate base period that uses your four most recently completed calendar quarters. This helps workers who started a new job partway through the lookback period.3Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes Section 288.501
You must also have lost your job through no fault of your own — a layoff, a position elimination, or a business closure. Quitting without good cause or being fired for misconduct triggers a disqualification that lasts until you earn new wages equal to at least ten times your weekly benefit amount.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes Section 288.050 Missouri’s misconduct definition reaches past the workplace itself and covers things like knowing disregard of your employer’s interests, repeated carelessness, no-call/no-show violations, and two or more unapproved absences after a written warning.5Missouri Revisor of Statutes. What Happens After You File
Within several days, the Division of Employment Security mails you a monetary determination notice. It shows your weekly benefit amount and your total maximum benefit balance, and it means the state is reviewing your eligibility.
Your weekly benefit equals 4 percent of the average of your two highest-earning base period quarters.6Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. How Are My Benefits Figured If your two best quarters were $6,000 and $5,000, the average is $5,500, and 4 percent gives you $220 a week. The floor is $35 and the ceiling is $320.
Missouri has a one-week waiting period before your first payment. You still have to file a weekly claim for that week, but no money comes for it. Only one waiting week applies per benefit year, and it eventually becomes payable once your remaining balance drops to the weekly benefit amount or less.7Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes Section 288.040
You pick one of two payment methods when you file:8Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. How Are Benefits Paid
- Direct deposit to a checking or savings account.
- A Money Network Visa debit card, mailed within about two weeks of your claim being established if you don’t set up direct deposit.
You can switch between the two anytime through UInteract. The same account also lets you choose to have federal and state taxes withheld from each payment, since unemployment benefits are taxable income.9Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Are My Benefits Taxable
Keeping Your Benefits Coming
Filing the initial claim is only the start. Every week you remain unemployed, you must submit a Weekly Request for Payment, starting the first Sunday after your claim is processed. You can file through UInteract around the clock or use the Virtual Agent Chat Bot without logging in.10Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. How Do I Make My Weekly Request for Payment
Each weekly request asks you to report gross earnings from part-time work, temporary gigs, or self-employment, even if the paycheck hasn’t arrived yet. The division verifies wages with your employer, so underreporting can trigger an overpayment finding or a fraud investigation.
Work Search Activities
You must complete at least three work search activities each week. Submitting applications, attending job fairs, going on interviews, and making direct contact with employers all count. Any day you perform part-time work also counts as a completed activity for that day.11Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Do I Need to Search for Work
Three groups are exempt: claimants in approved training programs, workers with a definite recall date, and employees in a Shared Work Program. Everyone else should keep a log of the date, employer name, and method of contact for each activity, because the division can audit your records at any time.
Being Available for Work
You must be able and available to accept full-time work during every week you claim benefits. If an illness, injury, or personal circumstance prevents you from working that week, don’t file a weekly request for it. Claiming benefits while unavailable can lead to an overpayment you’ll have to pay back.10Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. How Do I Make My Weekly Request for Payment
If Your Claim Is Denied
You have 30 calendar days from the date the determination is mailed or delivered to file an appeal. The deadline can be extended for good cause, but waiting without a strong reason puts your right to challenge the decision at risk.12Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Revised Statutes Section 288.070 Your appeal goes to an appeals tribunal, usually heard by phone, where you can present evidence and testimony. If any weeks of benefits aren’t in dispute, those payments continue while the appeal plays out. A tribunal ruling against you can be taken to the Industrial Commission, also within 30 days.
