To become a Board Certified Paralegal in Texas, you apply through the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS), meet its experience, education, and continuing-education thresholds in one of eight specialty areas, and pass a four-hour written exam in that specialty. The credential is voluntary, and the bar is set for paralegals who have already been doing the work for years.
TBLS certifies paralegals in Bankruptcy Law, Civil Trial Law, Criminal Law, Estate Planning and Probate Law, Family Law, Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law, Personal Injury Trial Law, and Real Estate Law.1Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Who Qualifies to Apply
You need to satisfy every one of the following before TBLS will accept your application:3Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS BCP Applicant Questions
- Five years of paralegal experience, at least three of them in Texas under the supervision of a licensed attorney doing business in the state.
- A concentration in your specialty: at least 50% of your paralegal duties during the three years before you apply must fall within the specialty area you’re seeking certification in.4Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS Paralegal Certification Application for Family Law
- Thirty hours of continuing legal education in your specialty within the three years before applying. Up to 10 of those hours may come from self-study.5Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS Paralegal Approved CLE Course Search
- One of these education credentials: a bachelor’s degree or higher, completion of an ABA-approved paralegal program, NALA certification, completion of a qualifying paralegal program with the required semester hours, or two additional years of supervised paralegal experience in place of a formal credential (seven years total).1Texas Board of Legal Specialization. The extra-experience path gives paralegals without a four-year degree a realistic route in, though it adds real time. Existing NALA Certified Paralegals can use that credential to satisfy the education piece.3Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS BCP Applicant Questions
What the Application Requires
The application form is available through the TBLS website, and it asks for more than a résumé. You’ll describe the substantive legal tasks you perform in detail, because TBLS is looking to confirm that your work involves genuine legal analysis rather than clerical support. You’ll also supply references from Texas attorneys who can speak to your competence in the specialty.
Your supervising attorney carries part of this load. TBLS verifies your experience through attorney assessments, so line up someone who can document the nature and scope of your work in the specialty.1Texas Board of Legal Specialization. About TBLS – Section: Paralegal Certification
Handle the CLE piece carefully. TBLS keeps its own list of approved courses, and you should verify each course qualifies before you submit. Because self-study is capped at 10 hours out of the required 30, plan live coursework accordingly.5Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS Paralegal Approved CLE Course Search
Fees and Deadlines for the 2026 Cycle
The application deadline for paralegal certification in the 2026 cycle is June 8, 2026. The exam is scheduled for November 2026, with the exact date to be determined.6Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS Fees and Application Schedule
Fees are split. Expect $250 for the certification application and $355 for the exam. Resubmitting an application that was returned for corrections costs $50. Once you’re certified, an annual fee of $200 keeps the credential active.7Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Fees and Deadlines
The Exam
The certification exam is a four-hour written test tailored to your specialty.3Texas Board of Legal Specialization. TBLS BCP Applicant Questions Each specialty publishes its own exam specifications. The Civil Trial Law exam, for instance, covers pretrial, trial, and appellate procedure under Texas rules, discovery practice, and the Texas Rules of Evidence.8Texas Board of Legal Specialization. The format typically pairs multiple-choice questions with essays. The essays hand you a fact pattern and ask you to apply the relevant legal principles the way you would in practice. Ethics and professional responsibility show up on every specialty exam.
This is where competent working paralegals sometimes stumble. Doing the work well is not the same as writing out the legal reasoning behind it under time pressure, and the exam demands the second skill.
Keeping the Credential After You Earn It
Certification runs on a five-year cycle. During each cycle you must complete 75 CLE hours in your specialty, with at least five hours in legal ethics.1Texas Board of Legal Specialization. About TBLS – Section: Paralegal Certification Self-study is capped at five hours per year during recertification, a tighter limit than the one that applied to your initial 30 hours.5Texas Board of Legal Specialization. You must also continue working in the specialty and file a renewal application before the five-year term expires. Miss the deadline and you lose the credential; getting it back means starting the certification process over. The $200 annual fee continues throughout the recertification period.
What the Credential Does Not Change
Board certification does not expand what a paralegal is permitted to do. Every certified paralegal still works under attorney supervision, and the line separating paralegal work from the unauthorized practice of law is unchanged by the credential. Under Texas law, paralegals cannot give legal advice, recommend a course of action in a legal matter, interpret statutes or court decisions for clients, or predict the outcome of litigation or negotiations, regardless of certification status.9Paralegal Division – State Bar of Texas. The Unauthorized Practice of Law in Texas The BCP designation signals depth of expertise to attorneys and employers; it is not a license to practice.
