How to Become a Lawyer in Kentucky: Bar Exam, Oath, and Admission

To become a lawyer in Kentucky, you need a Juris Doctor from an ABA- or AALS-approved law school, a passing MPRE score of 80, a Uniform Bar Examination score of at least 266, and clearance from the Kentucky Supreme Court’s character and fitness review before you can be sworn in as a member of the Kentucky Bar Association.1New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Kentucky Supreme Court Rules – SCR 2.014 Legal Education The process typically runs several months from graduation to admission, and the exam itself is given twice a year, in February and July.

Finish an Approved Law School

Kentucky Supreme Court Rule 2.014 requires every applicant to hold a J.D. or equivalent professional degree from a law school approved by the American Bar Association or the Association of American Law Schools.1New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Kentucky Supreme Court Rules – SCR 2.014 Legal Education The rule itself does not require an undergraduate degree, though most approved law schools will.

If you earned your law degree outside the United States, Kentucky’s rules do not include a standalone foreign-lawyer path. Some foreign-educated candidates complete an ABA-approved J.D. or LL.M. to satisfy SCR 2.014, but eligibility turns on whether the specific program meets the rule’s standards.

Pass the MPRE

Before you can sit for the bar exam, you need a scaled score of at least 80 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination.2New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Kentucky Supreme Court Rules – SCR 2.015 Professional Responsibility Examinations The MPRE is administered separately from the bar exam, typically three times a year, and most students take it in their second or third year of law school so it is behind them by graduation.

File the Bar Application on Time

Applications go through the Kentucky Office of Bar Admissions as a verified electronic filing. You will submit official transcripts from every post-secondary school you attended, FBI fingerprint cards for a national background check, and, if you have a driver’s license, certified driving records.3Supreme Court of Kentucky. Sit for the Bar Exam

Kentucky administers the Uniform Bar Examination on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July each year.6New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Uniform Bar Examination Day one is written: six Multistate Essay Examination questions at 30 minutes each, plus two Multistate Performance Test tasks that simulate assignments a new lawyer might handle, such as drafting a memo or client letter from a provided file.8National Conference of Bar Examiners. Multistate Essay Examination Day two is the Multistate Bar Examination: 200 multiple-choice questions over two three-hour sessions, covering civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, real property, and torts.9National Conference of Bar Examiners. The Format Changes in July 2027

Kentucky’s current exam, now called the Legacy UBE, will be offered through the February 2027 administration. Starting in July 2027, Kentucky switches to the NextGen UBE.6New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Kentucky Supreme Court Rules – SCR 2.080 Bar Examinations The NextGen runs nine hours over two days instead of twelve, in three three-hour segments that mix multiple-choice, short-answer, and a 60-minute performance task. Multiple-choice questions may have four to six options with up to two correct answers, a shift away from the single-answer MBE. The tested subjects narrow to eight: civil procedure, contract law, evidence, torts, business associations, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, and real property. Kentucky’s NextGen passing score is 616.11New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. If you have a disability that affects your ability to test under standard conditions, federal law requires the testing entity to provide reasonable accommodations, and documentation requests must be narrowly tailored to the accommodation you need.12ADA.gov. ADA Requirements: Testing Accommodations Prior accommodations on standardized exams, IEPs, or Section 504 Plans generally support the same request on the bar exam.

Clear Character and Fitness

Every applicant must pass a character and fitness review conducted by a committee of seven attorneys and two lay members appointed by the Supreme Court under SCR 2.040.13New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Kentucky Supreme Court Rules – SCR 2.040 Character and Fitness Committee You will disclose your criminal history, past civil litigation, and information about your financial responsibility. One disqualifier worth flagging: if you are already admitted in another state and have a pending complaint, active discipline, or disbarment, you are ineligible for Kentucky admission while any of that remains unresolved.4New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Take the Oath and Join the Bar

Once you have passed the exam and cleared character and fitness, the Supreme Court Clerk administers the constitutional oath, typically at a ceremony at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort.15Kentucky.gov. Annual KBA dues are $220 for your first five years of practice and $310 after that.16Kentucky Bar Association. Membership Information and Requests Kentucky also requires 12 hours of continuing legal education each year under SCR 3.645, including at least 2 ethics hours. Falling behind can lead to suspension, so build CLE into your calendar from year one.

If You Are Already a Lawyer Elsewhere

You may not need to retake a full bar exam. If you have a Legacy UBE score of 266 or higher (or a NextGen score of 616 or higher) earned within the last five years and in no more than five attempts, you can apply for admission by transferred score.11New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Kentucky Supreme Court Rules – SCR 2.090 Admission by Transferred Bar Examination Score All three UBE components must have been taken in the same jurisdiction at the same administration. You still need to pass the MPRE and clear Kentucky’s character and fitness review. Attorneys who have actively practiced for five of the past seven years in a jurisdiction that has reciprocity with Kentucky may qualify for admission without any examination under SCR 2.110.18New York Codes, Rules and Regulations.
