How to Become a Licensed Social Worker in Ohio: LSW to LISW

To become a licensed social worker in Ohio, you need a social work degree from an accredited program, a passing score on the national ASWB exam, a fingerprint-based background check, and an approved application through the state’s eLicense portal. The Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board issues two tiers: the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) for supervised practice and the Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) for independent and clinical work. Which License You Need

The LSW is the starting point. It lets you practice in agencies, hospitals, schools, and community organizations under supervision, and you can earn it with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in social work.

The LISW is the advanced credential. It allows independent practice, including private practice and clinical work without ongoing oversight. It requires a master’s or doctoral degree plus two years of supervised post-master’s experience. Most social workers hold the LSW first, build experience, and upgrade to the LISW once they qualify.

Education Requirements

Every applicant needs a social work degree from an accredited institution. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree qualifies for the LSW; the LISW requires at least a master’s in social work.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4757.28 – License as Social Worker

A degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) automatically satisfies the state’s academic requirements. If your program isn’t CSWE-accredited, the Board reviews your transcripts against coursework standards covering human development, social work practice methods, social welfare policy, social work theory, and a supervised field practicum.3Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Your official transcripts have to reach the CSWMFT Board directly from your registrar. Digital transcripts sent through a secure clearinghouse are fine. Anything routed through you first counts as unofficial.

Supervised Experience for the LISW

The LISW requires 3,000 hours of supervised social work experience over at least 24 consecutive months. You cannot compress the hours into a shorter window; the Board enforces the calendar requirement separately from the hour count.4Counselor and Social Worker Board. At least 150 of those hours must be face-to-face training supervision with a Licensed Independent Social Worker who holds a Supervisor designation (LISW-S). The cadence is flexible (weekly, biweekly, or another regular schedule), but supervision has to be spread across the full two-year period rather than bunched at either end. Your supervisor documents the hours and attests to your readiness before the Board treats the experience as complete.

The ASWB Exam

Ohio uses the national exams developed by the Association of Social Work Boards. Which one you take depends on your degree and license:

  • LSW with a bachelor’s degree: the Bachelors exam, $230
  • LSW with a master’s degree: the Masters exam, $230
  • LISW: the Clinical or Advanced Generalist exam, $260

You can’t register on your own. The CSWMFT Board has to review your application and grant exam pre-approval first. Once approved, you’ll get an email authorizing you to contact ASWB and schedule a test date. Without pre-approval, ASWB won’t release scores to Ohio.6Counselor and Social Worker Board. If you don’t pass, ASWB requires a 90-day wait between attempts. If your score was within 10 correct answers of passing, you may request a waiver to retake sooner, subject to Board approval. Each attempt costs the full exam fee.7Association of Social Work Boards. If You Fail the Exam

Background Check

Every applicant needs fingerprint-based criminal background checks through both the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the FBI. You’ll visit a WebCheck location for electronic fingerprinting and use the specific Board code included in your application instructions. Results travel directly from the vendor to the CSWMFT office, and both reports must arrive before your application can move forward.8Ohio Attorney General. Background Check

Fingerprinting fees vary by vendor, usually $30 to $60 for the combined BCI/FBI check. That’s an out-of-pocket cost on top of application and exam fees.

Submitting Your Application

Before you can finish the application, you have to watch the Board’s Laws and Rules video, which walks through the Ohio statutes and administrative code governing social work practice. The application runs through the eLicense Ohio portal. You’ll enter personal details, your Social Security number, educational history with graduation dates, and (for LISW applicants) supervisor information including license numbers and supervision dates. The system cross-references your background check and transcript arrivals, so both should be in transit before you start.

Application fees:

Payment is by credit or debit card. The Board doesn’t accept cash or checks, and your application isn’t active until payment clears. After submitting, you can log into eLicense to see which documents have been received. What It Costs in Total

Costs land across several organizations. For an LSW applicant:

  • Application fee: $83.50
  • ASWB Bachelors or Masters exam: $230
  • Fingerprinting: $30 to $60

That’s roughly $345 to $375, not counting whatever your university charges for transcripts. LISW applicants pay $103.50 for the application and $260 for the Clinical or Advanced Generalist exam, for a total near $395 to $425.

Renewal and Continuing Education

Once you’re licensed, renewal comes every two years on the anniversary of your issuance date. The renewal fee is $83.50 for an LSW and $103.50 for an LISW, both including the $3.50 processing fee. Each cycle requires 30 hours of continuing education, at least three of them in ethics. The Board can audit your CE credits, and coming up short can delay or block your renewal.
