How to Become Ordained in Oklahoma to Officiate Weddings

To become ordained in Oklahoma to officiate weddings, get ordained through a recognized religious organization — either a traditional denomination or an online ministry — and then follow the state’s marriage statutes when you perform the ceremony. Oklahoma no longer requires ministers to register credentials with any county office. Instead, you certify your authority directly on the marriage certificate you sign.

Who Oklahoma Law Allows to Perform Marriages

Oklahoma Statutes Title 43, Section 7 lists who can solemnize a marriage. Alongside judges and retired judges, the statute authorizes any ordained or authorized minister, preacher, priest, rabbi, or other religious leader of any denomination who is at least 18 years old and has been duly ordained or authorized by their religious organization.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-7 – Solemnization of Marriages Marriages performed under the practices of the Society of Friends, the Baha’i spiritual assembly, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are also recognized.

Two features of that language shape your options. “Any denomination” is broad, so the law does not restrict ordination to established churches or require a seminary degree. But the officiant has to be genuinely ordained or authorized by the religious body they name. Self-declaration is not enough.

Choose an Ordaining Organization

You have two realistic paths, and Oklahoma’s statute does not treat them differently as long as the ordaining body qualifies as a religious organization.

Online Ordination

Organizations such as the Universal Life Church and American Marriage Ministries offer free ordination that takes minutes. You fill out a short application with your full legal name and contact information, and the organization grants credentials, usually with an immediate digital confirmation. Oklahoma’s law requires only that the officiant be “duly ordained or authorized” by their religious organization, and online ministries function as religious organizations for this purpose.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-7 – Solemnization of Marriages

Online ordination has occasionally been challenged in other states, and individual county clerks sometimes ask questions. Pick a well-established organization that issues verifiable credentials, and pay the small fee for a physical ordination certificate or letter of good standing. If anyone asks for proof, you want a paper document ready even though no county is required to collect it.

Traditional Denominational Ordination

Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other established religious bodies each set their own ordination process. Most require theological education, supervised ministry, and formal approval by a governing body. Some expect a Master of Divinity or equivalent, which can take three or more years, along with written and oral examinations, an endorsement vote, and often a ceremony with the laying on of hands. This is the path for someone pursuing ministry as a long-term calling rather than officiating a single wedding.

You Do Not Register With Any Oklahoma County

Before November 2022, Oklahoma ministers had to file a copy of their credentials with the court clerk in their county of residence. HB 3075 eliminated that requirement effective November 1, 2022, and county clerks statewide no longer accept minister credentials for filing.2McCurtain County. Minister Credentials3Logan County, OK. The current rule instead requires you to certify on the marriage certificate itself that you hold credentials or authority from your church or synagogue to solemnize marriages.1Justia. Performing the Ceremony

Ordination alone does not make a marriage valid. Oklahoma imposes procedural requirements before, during, and after the ceremony, and the officiant carries responsibility for each step.

Before the Ceremony

The couple obtains a marriage license from any Oklahoma court clerk. The standard fee is $50, reduced to $5 if they complete a premarital counseling program. Oklahoma requires no blood test, no residency, and no waiting period for applicants 18 and older. Applicants 16 or 17 need parental consent and face a 72-hour waiting period, and marriage under 16 is prohibited except by court order.4Oklahoma County. Apply for a Marriage License

You cannot perform the ceremony until the couple hands you the license. The statute prohibits any officiant from solemnizing a marriage unless the license has been delivered into their possession and they have good reason to believe the people in front of them are the ones named on it.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-7 – Solemnization of Marriages Check the license against the couple’s IDs. Confirm it has not expired. The license is valid for 30 days from the date it was issued.5Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-20 – Computation of Time

During the Ceremony

At least two adult, competent witnesses must be present.1Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-7 – Solemnization of Marriages Beyond the witness requirement, Oklahoma law does not dictate the ceremony’s content. There is no required script, no mandatory vows, and no minimum length. You can design a religious service, a secular reading, or anything in between as long as the couple exchanges their consent to marry.

After the Ceremony

Immediately after the ceremony, endorse the marriage certificate with your name, your official or clerical title, the name and location of your congregation or religious body, and your signature.6Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-8 – Endorsement and Return of License Both witnesses sign and provide their mailing addresses. The couple signs with the names they will use going forward.

Return the completed license and certificate to the court clerk who issued them. The deadline is 30 days from the date the license was issued, not 30 days from the ceremony.5Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-20 – Computation of Time Because the ceremony itself has to happen inside that same 30-day window, a wedding held late in the window leaves little time. Mail or deliver the paperwork right away.

Penalties for Getting It Wrong

Oklahoma makes it a felony for an authorized officiant to knowingly solemnize a marriage between people who are legally barred from marrying, including minors without proper consent or people already married. The offense is a Class D1 felony, carrying a fine of up to $500 plus imprisonment.7Justia. Oklahoma Code 43-14 – Penalty for Performing Unlawful Marriage The word “knowingly” carries weight. Verify the license, confirm the identities, and satisfy yourself that no obvious impediment exists before you proceed.
