How to Book a Louisiana DMV Appointment: Online, Phone, and Documents

To book a Louisiana DMV appointment, go to expresslane.org and use the Book Appointment tool, or call the Office of Motor Vehicles at (225) 925-6146 and choose option 3.¹ Some transactions can only be handled with an appointment, including road skills tests and reinstatements, so scheduling ahead isn’t optional for those.²

Booking Online at ExpressLane

On expresslane.org, click Book Appointment on the home page.¹ The system asks for the service you need first — driver’s license, vehicle registration, reinstatement, and so on — then the OMV location you want. A calendar shows open dates and time slots. Pick one, enter your first name, last name, and phone number, and you’ll get a confirmation. Keep the confirmation email or code; you’ll need it when you arrive.

If you’re coming in for a reinstatement or renewal, check your license status before you book. The portal prompts you to do this, and finding a hold or suspension in advance saves you a wasted trip.²

Booking by Phone

Call (225) 925-6146 and press option 3. The line is staffed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.² Have your preferred location, service type, and basic ID details ready so the representative can set everything up in one call.

Which Services Require an Appointment

Many OMV transactions can be walked in, but a few can only be done by appointment at offices that offer them:²

Road skills tests
Motorcycle skills tests
Reinstatement of driving privileges
International Registration Plan (IRP) transactions
Oral testing

For everything else the scheduling system covers — driver’s license issuance and renewal, REAL ID, ID cards, vehicle registration and title transfers, CDL services — an appointment is optional but lets you skip the general queue.³

What to Bring for a Driver’s License or ID

For a standard driver’s license or state ID, plan to bring a document proving U.S. citizenship or lawful presence (passport, birth certificate, or similar), your Social Security number, and two separate documents showing your Louisiana address, such as a utility bill and a lease.

REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted ID like a passport is required to board domestic flights and enter secure federal facilities.⁴ A Louisiana REAL ID has a small star in the upper-right corner; a standard license without that star won’t get you through TSA. The document rules are stricter: bring original or certified copies of your identity document (an unexpired U.S. passport or an original birth certificate), your Social Security card, and two proofs of Louisiana residency.

Applicants Under 18

Minors need everything an adult applicant needs, plus proof of school enrollment or attendance. Louisiana law requires anyone under 18 to show documentation that they are enrolled in and attending school, participating in a home-study program, or enrolled in an adult education program leading to a high school equivalency diploma.⁵ The school must provide this documentation on request, and the minor presents it at the OMV.

Name Changes

If your name has changed, update it with the Social Security Administration before your OMV visit; the office verifies the change electronically.⁶ Bring the original certified document supporting the change: a marriage certificate for a married name, or the original divorce decree or birth certificate to revert to a previous name. Photocopies and altered documents will not be accepted.

What to Bring for a Vehicle Title or Registration

For a used vehicle, the OMV expects:⁷

A completed Vehicle Application Form (DPSMV 1799)
The certificate of title assigned before a notary by the seller to you, with any lien properly released
An original notarized bill of sale or invoice showing the actual purchase price and a full description of the vehicle
Proof of liability insurance coverage (if you want a license plate at the same time)
A copy of each vehicle owner’s current, valid photo ID

Louisiana accepts several forms of insurance proof: an original insurance card, a photocopy of the card or policy, or an image displayed on a mobile device.⁸ Identity and title documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies of a birth certificate or vehicle title won’t be accepted.

What to Bring for a Road Skills Test

You supply the vehicle, and the examiner inspects it first. A vehicle that fails inspection means no test that day. It must have:⁹

Valid registration and a matching license plate
A current inspection sticker
Working headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals (front and rear, both sides)
A left outside mirror plus either an inside rearview mirror or a right outside mirror
Functioning windshield wipers, horn, speedometer, and seatbelts
Tires in safe condition (no bald tires)
Front doors that open from both inside and outside

You also need proof of liability insurance on that vehicle. The insurance must cover the date of the test, list the vehicle by year, make, and VIN, and must not show you as an excluded driver.⁹ Acceptable proof includes an insurance ID card, a copy of the policy, or written confirmation on the agent’s letterhead with the required details. If the speedometer fails during the test, the examiner will stop and you’ll reschedule.

How You Can Pay

OMV offices accept credit cards, debit cards, personal checks, cashier’s checks, money orders, and electronic funds transfers.¹⁰ Credit and debit card payments carry a processing fee of $1.25 plus 1% of the transaction total. Online renewals through ExpressLane require a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card.¹¹ If you pay by personal check, it must include the signer’s driver’s license number and phone number, show a street address rather than only a P.O. box, and cannot be drawn on a credit card account.

If You Can’t Get an Appointment

When appointment slots are scarce or the nearest OMV is far away, Louisiana’s Public Tag Agents handle many of the same transactions: driver’s license issuance and renewals, REAL ID applications, ID cards, vehicle registration, expedited titles, and some reinstatement services.¹² You can find one on the OMV’s office locator at offices.omv.la.gov.

The trade-off is a convenience fee of up to $23 per transaction on top of the standard OMV fees.¹³ Public Tag Agents must disclose the fee before starting the transaction and post it visibly in the office, so you’ll know the added cost before you commit.
