How to Calculate Tax, Title, and License in Louisiana

To calculate tax, title, and license in Louisiana, add four things: sales tax on the vehicle’s price minus any trade-in (state 4.45% plus your local parish and municipal rate), a $68.50 title fee, an $8 handling charge, and a registration fee set by a bracket table that works out to roughly 0.1% of the selling price per year, sold in two-year increments with a $20 minimum. The sales tax is almost always the biggest number, and your local rate is what makes two buyers of the same car owe different totals.

Sales Tax: State Rate Plus Your Local Rate

Louisiana’s state sales tax rate on a vehicle purchase is 4.45%.1Louisiana Department of Revenue. What Is the Current Louisiana State Sales Tax Rate That is only the state portion. Every parish, and many municipalities, add their own sales tax on top. In many areas the combined rate lands somewhere between 8.45% and 11.45%, so the local layer can easily be larger than the state’s.

You apply the combined rate to the net purchase price of the vehicle. The OMV uses your home address to determine which local rate applies, so the rate that matters is the one for where you live, not where you bought the car. Confirm your parish rate against the Department of Revenue’s parish tax table before you estimate.

Trade-In Reduces the Taxable Amount

If you trade in a vehicle as part of the deal, sales tax applies only to the difference between the new vehicle’s price and the trade-in value. The trade-in has to involve a real transfer of ownership, and its value has to represent part of the purchase price of the new vehicle.2Legal Information Institute. La Admin Code Tit 61 I-4307 – Collection Buy a $30,000 car and trade in your old one for $5,000, and you pay tax on $25,000. At a 9.45% combined rate, that’s $2,362.50 instead of $2,835.

Title Fee and Handling Charge

The Louisiana certificate of title costs $68.50.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registration, Title and Plate Fees The OMV also collects an $8 handling charge on titling and registration transactions, including new titles, out-of-state titles, ownership transfers, and duplicates.4Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes – Office of Motor Vehicles Handling Charge For a standard transaction, plan on $76.50 in fixed fees before registration.

Registration Fees by Price Bracket

Louisiana doesn’t charge a flat registration fee for passenger vehicles. The fee is based on the vehicle’s selling price, calculated at 0.1% of value per year and sold in two-year increments, with a floor set by a $10,000 minimum value. The cheapest two-year plate is therefore $20, no matter how little you paid.3Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registration, Title and Plate Fees

The OMV publishes a bracket table that steps up in $2 increments. Reference points:

  • $10,000–$10,499: $20.00
  • $15,500–$16,499: $32.00
  • $20,500–$21,499: $42.00
  • $25,500–$26,499: $52.00
  • $30,500–$31,499: $62.00
  • $35,500–$36,499: $72.00
  • $40,500–$41,499: $82.00

One thing to watch: the registration bracket uses the vehicle’s full selling price, not the amount left after a trade-in. A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade-in still falls in the $30,000 bracket for plate fees, even though sales tax was calculated on $25,000.

A Worked Example

Say you buy a $30,000 vehicle, trade in your old one for $5,000, and live in a parish with a 9.45% combined sales tax rate. The numbers:

  • Sales tax: ($30,000 − $5,000) × 9.45% = $2,362.50
  • Title fee: $68.50
  • Handling charge: $8.00
  • Registration (two-year plate, $30,000 bracket): $60.00
  • Total: $2,499.00

Your actual total depends on your local tax rate and the exact price. Because sales tax dwarfs the other components, getting the correct combined rate for your address matters more than any other input.

Deadlines That Change the Number

Louisiana gives purchasers very little time. You must apply for a new certificate of title within five days of receiving the previous title or taking delivery of the vehicle, whichever applies.5Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 32 – Certificate of Title New residents moving to Louisiana have 30 days from the date they receive a Louisiana driver’s license to title and register each vehicle they operate on public roads.6Louisiana Department of Public Safety Office of Motor Vehicles. Miss these windows and your calculation grows. Late sales tax accrues a 5% penalty for every 30 days (or part of 30 days) it stays unpaid, capped at 25%.7Louisiana Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Sales Tax Driving with an expired or missing registration carries a separate penalty equal to 25% of the annual cost of the proper license.8Legal Information Institute. La Admin Code Tit 73 I-1105 – Vehicle Registration and Licensing Violations These stack, so a $2,500 tax bill left too long can add $600 or more.

If You’re Moving In From Another State

Vehicles you already own and bring into Louisiana follow a different calculation. If you paid sales tax when you bought the car in your previous state, Louisiana gives you a credit against its use tax equal to the rate you paid there multiplied by the cost price subject to Louisiana’s tax.9Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 47-337.86 – Credit for Taxes Paid The credit only works if the other state offers a reciprocal credit to Louisiana residents. Most do; confirm before relying on it.

There’s also a cap for new residents. After credits are applied, the combined state and local use tax on a vehicle brought in by a new resident cannot exceed $90, as long as the vehicle was previously titled and registered in the other state.10Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 47 RS 47-302 – Imposition of Tax You still owe the $68.50 title fee, the $8 handling charge, and a registration fee based on the vehicle’s value. Use tax on an out-of-state vehicle is due within 30 days of the vehicle first entering Louisiana, and you’ll need documentation of the tax you already paid.7Louisiana Department of Revenue. When Sales Tax Doesn’t Apply

Active-Duty Military

Active-duty military members stationed in Louisiana who bought and titled their vehicle in another state are exempt from Louisiana’s state use tax on that vehicle, provided the other state collected sales tax on the original purchase and the buyer was a resident of or stationed in that state at the time.11Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 47-305.48 – Exemption Automobiles Owned by Military Personnel The exemption lasts as long as the owner remains on active duty and stationed in Louisiana.

Donated Vehicles

A vehicle received as a gift carries no sales tax on the transfer. The donation must be documented on an Act of Donation form (DPSMV 1699), signed by two witnesses, and notarized, and the form requires the vehicle’s actual value rather than $0 or $1.12Louisiana Department of Public Safety Office of Motor Vehicles. Policy 100.00 Transactions Involving Trusts The title fee, handling charge, and registration fee still apply. This path is common for transfers between family members.
