To cancel an EZ TAG account, pay off any outstanding balance, submit a closure request to the Harris County Toll Road Authority online, by phone, or by mail, and then destroy the tag itself. Your prepaid balance is refunded once pending tolls clear, which takes roughly six to eight weeks if the refund goes out by check.
Get Your Account Information Ready
Pull together what HCTRA needs to find your account and verify you before you start. That means your EZ TAG account number (on your billing statements and in your dashboard at hctra.org), the serial number printed on the transponder sticker, and the license plate number for every vehicle linked to the account.
Sign in at hctra.org and check your current balance first. If it’s negative, pay it off. HCTRA won’t close an account that still has tolls owing, and letting a balance sit while you try to cancel is how small toll amounts turn into much larger problems.
Submit the Cancellation Request

Save the digital receipt, which records the exact date and time of your request. Before you log out, turn off automatic replenishment so your card or bank isn’t charged again after you’ve asked to close.

By Mail
Download HCTRA’s account status change form, sign it, and state clearly that you want to close the account.3Harris County Toll Road Authority. Request to Change EZ TAG Account Status Include your current mailing address, since HCTRA sends confirmation and any paper refund check to whatever address is on file. Send it certified so you have proof of delivery, and call to follow up if you haven’t heard back within two weeks.
Destroy the Tag
EZ TAG stickers don’t need to be returned. Peel the tag off the windshield and cut through the internal chip so it can’t be scanned later. A discarded tag that still works could trigger toll charges you’d then have to dispute on a closed account. If you have tags on more than one vehicle, destroy all of them.
Your Refund and Final Balance
After HCTRA processes the cancellation, any remaining prepaid balance is refunded once the system finishes clearing tolls captured by roadside sensors that haven’t posted yet. If your payment method on file was a bank account, the refund goes out as a mailed check, which takes six to eight weeks.3Harris County Toll Road Authority. Request to Change EZ TAG Account Status Credit card refunds are typically reversed to the original card and can arrive sooner.
Watch your statements during that window. If you see any unexpected charges after submitting the request, call HCTRA. The tag fee itself is non-refundable, so you won’t get that back.4Harris County Toll Road Authority. EZ TAG Agreement Once pending transactions clear, log back in and confirm the account status reads as closed.
If You Have Unpaid Tolls
Skipping the balance and hoping the cancellation makes it go away is the most expensive mistake you can make here. Under the Texas Transportation Code, HCTRA can add an administrative fee of up to $6 to each unpaid toll invoice, capped at $48 per person in any twelve-month period.5Texas Legislature Online. If you receive two or more unpaid toll invoices and still haven’t paid within 30 days, a $25 civil penalty attaches on top of the administrative fees and the tolls themselves. Only one civil penalty can be assessed per six-month period, but a county or district attorney can sue to collect the penalty, the unpaid tolls, and all accumulated administrative fees.5Texas Legislature Online. Texas Transportation Code Chapter 228 Unpaid toll debt can also trigger a vehicle registration block through the county tax assessor’s office, meaning you can’t renew your registration until the debt is settled.
If the debt gets handed to a collection agency, the collector can report it to the national credit bureaus. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a collection account stays on your credit report for seven years from the date of the original delinquency.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Paying the collection updates the status to “paid” but doesn’t remove the entry or restart the clock.
If You Sold or Traded the Vehicle
Canceling the tag is only half the job when the car is gone. File a Vehicle Transfer Notification (form VTR-346) with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days of the sale.7Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Texas Motor Vehicle Transfer Notification VTR-346 This protects you from liability if the buyer runs up tolls, parking tickets, or other charges before registering the vehicle in their name.
The form asks for the VIN, license plate, date of transfer, and the new owner’s name and address. Submit it online at TxDMV.gov or mail it to the Vehicle Titles and Registration Division in Austin.7Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Texas Motor Vehicle Transfer Notification VTR-346 Filing late is better than not filing at all. Don’t submit both an online and a mailed copy of the same notification.
If You’re Switching to Another Texas Toll Tag
If you’re moving to TxTag or another regional tag rather than leaving toll roads altogether, close the EZ TAG account before activating the new one. Texas toll roads have interoperability agreements, so a single active tag from any participating issuer covers the same roads. Two active accounts means both get charged, and untangling duplicate tolls afterward is avoidable by closing the old account first.
